I disliked the first two versions, I just didn't develop any empathy for the game or the characters. Since I usually like to wander around turning innocent bystanders into overdone barbeque pork chops, people may think I've not developped much empathy for the characters of GTA3 either.
However I do 'feel their pain' as I brutally slaughter them in their dozens for my petty sadistic entertainment.
I know, I just don't get it either. Maybe it'll sell, maybe it won't.
What about a network enabled Grand Theft Auto?
There's a game that definetley HAS sold well on the PS2 (apart from in Auzzie). Hell, if they're that keen on the 'Sims' motif, have an expanded 'At home with the Mafia' bonus game where you can breed mafiosa (probably enacted at Luigis Club in Red Light, Portland). You know, add a few hot-tubs etc. 'Say hello to 8-ball, ladies'.
You could help out the neighbours 'Give them an offer they can't refuse' etc.
It'd be Kewl...
As for my earlier comment about Hairy Saliors playing street girls, I think we have one in the discussion already (RE:fp, score1).
You obviously know nothing of legacy COBOL systems.
It's hard enough getting programmers to work on these less 'sexy' systems as it is, but what with 'no disclosure' contracts it's hard for COBOL programmers to feel they are well compensated for working on antiquated, complicated and sometimes wholly illogical systems. Companies need to be able to give 'ego boosting' titles to their staff in order to make up for the less than ego boosting salaries, otherwise they'll all run off to work on Lotus Notes, Visual Basic or the other easy stuff(?).
Sometimes titles adopted by those seeking work are related to the degree they obtained, not me though, Information Engineer or Computer Scientist doesn't say a lot...
And if you think the technical titles sound grandiose, you should see Management titles these days(although all I'd get is 'Lord of the Privvies' or something. I'm not even important enough to get 'business cards' and all my colleagues got given them...
SCi-Fi is way too complicated a genre now to class all the movies in one list.
The majority of people like Star Trek and Star Wars, Geeks and tech-heads will be inclined to prefer the more obscure titles that have a little thought behind the special effects.
I know how complicated individual tastes are, I used to be Media Officer and Secretary of a University Sci-Fi society. I almost killed it on opening night when we showed the anime:Wicked City (all the chemists walked out in disgust, they just wanted to watch Next Gen: every night).
Fantasy on the other hand is simpler because it never really got into the cinema (anyone remember 'Krull', or 'Willow') only recently with LOTR and the Harry Potter film has it got good press.
Why don't we categorise a little more in Sci-fi (I'd draw up a few categories, only I'm way too busy today at work today).
I had similar probs with a well know UK provider of Telecomunications. Their web User web page was not rendering properly in KDE or Mozilla so I could not cancel my account online.
I phoned their helpline, only to be told after about ten minutes I could not cancel my account at this number and had to dial the Accounts line.
The Accounts line told me I had to use the web-page.
I was fed up at this point (about an hour later) and asked could I downgrade to a cheaper package on this line.
Yes, the help-guy said, I could. So I switched from anytime at a monthly charge to a Pay as you go service which I have no intention of using.
Their whole script is designed to make it dificult to cancel, but changeing the terms was easier (preferably change to paying nothing from paying at all).
This the bit I am dreading about a multiplayer GTA. Then when you stop for a hooker, it'll really be some huge sailer with a beard playing as a hooker and I'll feel really dirty afterwards...
Wizards have begun creeping into KDE as well. every release, a few more stupid wizards.
Pratchett was right here as well. The more wizards trying to do magick, the more chance of tentacled things from the Dungeon Dimensions appearing to eat your brain and leave you a useless vegetable (with MSCE certificate to prove it).
I had to take the bus to work for a month after playing GTA3...
A. I'd lost the habit of driving on the left side of the road (I live in U.K/Ireland). B. I had the temptation to mount the pavement to get past slow moving traffic. C. I could not longer drive 1st person, I'd have to sit on the roof and control the car via a complicated set of cables through the sunroof.
I'm hoping the next version of GTA will have some neato network gaming ability. Imagine being able to hook up with an online cartel, or the thrill of starting a riot with other players or foiling their missions with a well-aimed grenade...
I seem to remember buying a lot of EA titles when I had a C64 / Amiga 500 (sob, my C64 committed suicide tragically, and I had to sell the A500 to pay my way through college).
Can't give you any examples mind you.
Haven't bought an EA title in years, apart from the recent James Bond game which was a vast waste of money on unimaginitive crap (I felt as if the game was leading me round by the nose). EA to EB (Electronics Boutique - trade in) in less than 24 hrs.
If they were to write a real James Bond game, most of the 'levels' would involve trying to look suave and sophisticated and the rest would be an online version of 'how to chat up women' (anybody got one, by the way?). It'd be 1% action.
It'd probably play a bit like 'Breakdance' on the C64...
I don't suppose this will see the shores of Europe any time soon. We're still waiting the SL-5500 (I'm glad I got mine while over on business).
A C64 version would be cool though, it'd actually be an improvement over the original as we wouldn't have to wait for the loading time (unless we want to lisiten to the often groovy loading music (Ocean) or pretend we're being interrogated by watching a Mutant Camels loader.
Please, please don't brain wash me MR. Torturer...
Everybody seems to be reminiscing about when "every game was unique" in the 80's. I just looked at the Neo-geo site, and most of the games appear to be 'Street Fighter' clones or variations.
Get a grip, I have a Pocket Colour I bought just before the unit was pulled from Europe and all I can get are the same few game types.
What about the early to mid 80's(C64, Speccy etc.)? There were far fewer game clones then.
Hang on, I think I've turned into Granpa from the Simpsons...
Yeah, I was shocked and horrified at the number of 'nicey nicey' morning and afternoon chat shows that showcased the X-box around launch time.A number claimed to be consumer oriented, but they didn't do a comparision with other products
Yuck, it still gives me nightmares, ingratiating grins proffering huge black controllers like they were gifts from God and would confer freedom from sin because it came from Microsoft almighty

Most 'good quality' DVD players are still high, and as you can only play, not record, a lot of people fork out for a PS2 because they get a DVD player that can also do something else.
As with most DC owners (unlucky souls we are) are I am sure a little annoyed at this rant about the upcoming Ps2 internet functionality. The DC did it first, and there was no monthly sub, just your average phone rates. A better deal for consumers from sega(probably one of the reasons they now just do games).
I am thinking of a PS2 myself for DVD(my linux dvd playback is not reliable), and as the life of the DC is now limited.
I don't think it's a negative thing that this is discussed once in/. once in a while. Heck I wasn't even aware of the Mandrake donations page(I'm a Suse7.1 user myself (currently on NT though(@work)and box-bought - couldn't be R-sed dn/lding).

Red Dwarf had been running since at least 1989, I believe it is the longest running Sitcom on UK TV. It evolved over time, and consistency has never been a major concern for example the uniforms changed several times over the 7 seasons, generally as the budget increased, Lister had his appendix out twice.
The gestalt entity known as Grant Naylor broke up during season 6, but the franchise was left open for other writers to continue (hey - open source Sci-fi). Robert Llewellan(Kryten) wrote an ep.
It really should have died, so you can look at it in two ways(either accept every extra season or episode as a bonus and enjoy it while you can, or regard any additional material to a classic as polluting a 'pure artform'). Personally, both with Star Trek and red Dwarf, I regard any material produced with interest and enjoy it as it is.
I'm not entirely sure about comparing RD and the ST franchises. One is a half-hour sitcom which just happens to be set on a spaceship(the sc-fi setting was originally not the principle driver, it was about two incompatible people forced to endure eachothers company, it could have been set on a desert island or in a prison(does season 7 make sense now?). Comparing ST with Babylon 5 (now theres a story with plot arcs, pity it died near the end and Crusade failed).
cheer up, the producers(Paramount or the BBC) could spend the money in worse ways.
This discussion resembles a post mortem more than a eulogy anyway

A lot of the general public use microsoft products for self-abuse.
So do a lot of companies it seems.

I'm of the impression the inflatable populace are the more fortunate, not the other way around.

I wish they'd done Barbarian/Barbarian2 (can't remember if the Publisher was Palace or some other).
Pixelated Maria Whittakers, yumee!!
I liked to 'play' with Maria's character in Barbarian2 more than the Arnie character, I kinda got off on getting beaten by the Jailer on Level 2.

And no decent games for the PS2 at the moment and not much on the Gamecube line-up neither(well, nothing to compell me to fork up for one).
I'll just have to make-do with Shenmue2 on my DC, GTA3 on my PS2 and Perfect Dark on my N64 for the time being.
