The point of a self-sustaining off-world colony isn't to advance scientific knowledge (though that would surely happen in the process). It is a backup plan. If there was some significant world-ending event like the dinosaur-killer meteor hit, global nuclear war, super flu or whatever, the human species would survive. The sooner we get off this planet and colonize the solar system, the better, IMO. The next step would be to colonize another star system. The sun could unexpectedly go nova;-) Our current situation is somewhat like running a mission-critical server, but never doing backups.
No civilization could ever populate the entire universe, even if they had FTL capabilities. However, galaxies are a completely different ballgame. It's certainly conceivable that a species could colonize all the habitable worlds in a given galaxy, given enough time, even without FTL ships.
Another great new feature, the Decider, decides which WMDs, i mean WMAs, you can play. It might also Decide to turn your system off and refuse to boot if it doesn't approve of how you're using the computer.
I picked one up over my lunch break at the Target in Crystal, MN. Someone who posted at Joystiq aparently called all the Targets and Walmarts in the Twin Cities area and none had them, except the Crystal Target. Saved me a bunch of work. Thanks, Pancakeshouse, whoever you are! There were about 10 left in the case at 1200 CST.
The screen is _sweet_. I never got a first-gen DS, so I'm not sure how it compares, but my GBA SP looks like crap in comparison. Picked up Mario Kart and Zoo Keeper. They didn't have Brain Age, so maybe I'll try another store on the way home.
Maybe I've been out of the Mario loop for too long, but isn't her name supposed to be Princess Toadstool? Soon I'll be back in the loop./me eagerly awaits the DS Lite, and will probably get NSMB too.
I used to use TR for a long time and it worked great. Then the wire broke, the token fell out of the ethernet and rolled under a heavy cabinet. Never did find the stupid token and upgraded to fiber.
I kind of just fiddled with it until it went back in. Those metal pins need to go into the two holes, then somehow the plastic tabs pop back into their slots... sorry I can't be more help, but I just messed with it until it worked, heh
Same here. I've had my MacBook for about 4 days and the Enter/Return key just popped off about half an hour ago. I was able to pop it back in, and it seems fine now. The keyboard is the only complaint I have about the MacBook. I love the backlighting, but the keyboard on my iBook G4 seems more solid and has a much better feel to it.
Even though iBooks require significant disassembly to replace things such as the HDD or logic board, I haven't had to do this. And if I ever do, it will be fun.
I upgraded the hard drive in my iBook G4 from 30GB, 4200RPM, 2MB cache to 100GB, 5400RPM, 8MB cache. It took about 3 hours. 8 million tiny screws to take out, all different sizes. But it was worth the trouble. The system is noticably snappier, and I can keep my whole 40GB music collection on my laptop:-) It does get a bit warm on the left palmrest, where the hard drive resides, but it's not bad. No noticeable difference in battery life.
I also have a W8612 2.16Ghz MacBook. I believe this is "Revision E". Work paid for it, to replace my 5-year old Dell Latitude running CentOS:-) Loving it so far. Beats the crap out of my personal iBook G4. Anyway, I've not noticed any issues except for the screen flicker at lowest backlight setting. That's kind of annoying. Dunno about CPU whine, since I sit next to a bunch of noisy servers all day. I'll check it out when I get home.
Build quality seems good, except my Enter key just popped off a minute ago... popped it back in without too much trouble, but that's kind of worrisome... if it happenes again I'll probably bring it in to an Apple store. Except for the backlighting, I think I like my iBook G4's keyboard better. Has a nicer feel to it.
The bottom line is that Nintendo is trying to do something that's actually different. They're betting the farm on the fact that gamers like myself are getting tired of shelling out more and more money for consoles that are less and less innovative.
Hear, hear. I am also eagerly awaiting the Rev. I currently have an Xbox that I just got last year and am enjoying it. A lot of older Xbox games, which I've never played, are now dirt cheap, so that's nice. However, I have no interest in the 360, or Playstation. I wish they'd have made an Xbox version of Katamari, but other than that, I don't care about the PS2/PS3.
The backwards compatability of the Nintendo Revolution is going to be huge. There will be a lot of people like me who have NES, SNES and Sega Genesis consoles that may not be in the best shape anymore and want to play the old games again, or play games that we wanted back in the day and never got. I also like the N64 compatibilty, if only to play Bond so I can relive post-drinking knives-only deathmatches from college;-) Also, my fiance doesn't really like video games, but she LOVES Mario Party, heh. Since I never got a N64 of my own, this will be sweet. GC compatibility is nice, too. There are several GC games that I'd like to play, but can't justify buying a GC console when I just got an Xbox last year, and when the Revolution is coming out so soon. The Rev will be absolutely perfect if Nintendo or somebody else works out a way to play Dreamcast games on it. And, of course, I'm sure there will be plenty of sweet Rev-native games.
You may have a point about noise-cancelling headphones, but a refrigerator doesn't create cold, or "anti-heat". It simply moves heat from the inside of the box to the outside.

This could be useful for silencing those cuntbags with an annoying robot-like voice.
William Shatner is bacon.
Elaine. :-)
But you get more bang for your buck from SPACE METAL
Look man, I ain't fallin' for no banana in my server rack!

One hour a night? WTF kind of weirdo are you? Why aren't you reading /. at work, like the rest of us?
ah, nevermind. The horse is putrescent. Is there a hose nearby? I need to wash off my boots.
Apologies to KOMPRESSOR
You do realize that no one uses the future perfect tense anymore since it was discovered not to be, right?

Giggity giggity giggity.
glad I could help :)
I'm running IE on my new MacBook via Boot Camp. But since Macs don't get viruses, I'm safe, right?

So, I'll see you in line

I triple-ROT13 encrypt all my sensitive files. I copy them to an external drive, and ROT13 them again for good measure.
