You should take a look at Eve Online. It's a space-based MMOG, completly differnt than WoW. But it's a blast. There's no skill-grinding like in other games. Skills are learned in real time, whether you're online or not. Going from Level 0 to Level 1 in a skill usually takes abuot 15 mins, but going from 4 to 5 (the highest level) often takes days, up to 2 weeks for some skills. So, you can start learning some powerful skill, go on vacation, and your character keeps learning while you're gone. Being online playing does not affect skill development in any way. You just need to log in to start learning a new skill when one is finished. And, of course, to actually play;)
Also, the game has a smaller, more mature player-base than the more popular MMOGs. You rarely see 14-yr-old "l33t n00bs" like in WoW or EQ. Check it out: http://www.eve-online.com/ The game universe is huge. There's over 5000 solar systems, and they keep expanding it. I've been playing for a few months and have only scratched the surface (granted, I don't play every day).
That's a good idea, but this is the 21st century. What about backups?
I recommend dictating into a digital voice recorder, download the.wav file to your computer, uuencode it, and print it out. Keep the printouts in a safe-deposit box just in case.
Despite all these posts from people bitching about how this planet isn't exactly the same as our own, it's the closed we've found so far, and is much more Earth-like than the rest. It is not a huge, hot gas giant like most of the other extrasolar planets discovered. It has a solid rocky surface, and is relatively small.
If they can detect planets like this now (especially at 25,000 light years! wow), it is only a matter of time before a planet that is truly Earth-like is discovered.
There should be freedom to discuss anything in the classroom. I find it absurd that liberal groups want to give academic freedom to ideas they believe in, but will deprive others of the right to speak their mind.
You're absolutely right. That's what school is for. No one is trying to deprive kids of academic freedom.
Many people seem to be interpreting this ruling as banning discussion of Intelligent Design in schools. This is not the case; it is only banning the teaching of ID in a science class. I have no problem with ID being discussed in school. However, discussing Intelligent Design in a science class is off-topic, just as discussing Civil War-era military tactics is off-topic in a science class. Civil War discussions belong in a history class, and ID belongs in a religion or philosophy or "social studies" class. The idea of ID cannot be tested; therefore it is not a scientific theory and should not be taught in a science class.
You do realize that using children's toys is a sign of mental illness?
Umm... this is Slashdot. We all float down here.
Anyway, I'm almost 27 and I bust out my old Legos occasionally (usually while drinking, hehe). I sold most of them on eBay years ago for MAD CASH, but I kept my most recent Technics set, a pnumatic set with nice dark blue pieces;) That set is probably 12 years old, and all the pieces, even the rubber tubing, is like new. I have some other pnumatic parts that are close to 20 years old, also like new (even the one that broke and was super-glued 15+ years ago). That stuff was built to last. I also kept a bucket of random parts. When I have kids, I'll probably give them the Legos when they're old enough.
Legos aren't just for kids, though they can be fun for reliving one's childhood memories. How is building a model with Legos any different than building a traditional model (like many adults do)? Also, Legos can be great for prototyping a more substantial project.
I see that Lego's online store has a 2000-pc bucket for $20. I'm tempted to order it and build a giant Trogdor or something;-)
He has money to waste on stuff, thats it. None of his stuff is all that impressive other than he had the money to waste on doing it. His "skills" are nothing any of tons of other geeks couldn't do if they had the cash to waste on the LCDs and other parts/services required to build the stuff.
No more of a waste than spending money on any other hobby or pasttime (be it hardware hacking like this, drinking at the bar, smoking, skiing, or whatever). This guy enjoys building things, and chooses to spend his disposable income on the necessary parts. What's the problem? If you can build something better, please show us, or quit yer bitchin'. It is a "waste" of bandwidth.
Civ 3 really pisses me off that, despite orders to the governors to never build units or to always build any city improvement they can, it still sometimes builds units, or shifts to "wealth" instead of building improvements from the expansion packs. GRR!
I'd call this a feature. Just like in real life, mayors, governers, committees, etc all make boneheaded moves, despite orders the Higher Ups. Especially when the subject of creating wealth comes up. Maybe Civ IV will have a feature that allows you to fire these guys and hire/appoint real yes-men.;-)
Surely this movie is not the Star Trek / Star Wars killer that so many fans said it could be.
Why is this even an issue? Firefly/Serenity isn't Star Trek nor Star Wars, and it isn't trying to be. All three are good, entertaining SciFi, and they're all different. There's no need for competition and argument over which is "better".
Which is better, apples, oranges, or roast beef? Discuss.
"Well, look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!!?"
There never was a Palm VII.

buh? I'm pretty sure there was a Palm VII... http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/review/palm_vii_revi
Well, if you reuse whatever bottles you're drinking out of, there's no need to get up.
;-)
Just keep them seperated from the unspoiled bottles
AC is just bitter he didn't win. Just like me ;)
(not a total loss. I downloaded an Iced Earth album with an iTunes gift card, heh)

I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you meddling kids!!
Now, git off my lawn!

I like Bacterial Marketers better. They're easier to kill with Lysol.
It will kick your ass into next week. http://www.lightningdrink.com/
Chuck Norris needs to come out with a competing product.

It's Apple, so it's cool.

chill out man... stay loose....
Don't you mean, "stay lose"?
RMS invented GNU. When the father of GPL / FSF can complain, it just invalidates your argument.

Oops, I think I replied to the wrong comment. Oh well, its quoted in its entirety.

So you agree that it's at best less-lethal, not non-lethal...
Laser guns from the future don't kill people, people using laser guns from the future to blind a driver so he crashes kill people!
Um... if you had RTFA, you would have known they used the Hubble _SPACE_ telescope for these shots. There's no atmosphere to get in the way.

This particular theory was first applied to Unreal Tournament 2004, but I believe it can be generalized for much of the IntarwebNet.
If you take your laptop out of range while you have the Token, you get to keep it. If you collect 10 of them, you can mail them in for a prize.

Nevermind. I had other crap in my cart. It is too early in the morning to be posting on /. ;)
Shipping is $3.99, but one must wonder, why bother charging that? heh
