    Another real-world example is Pine. Early versions of Pine had a BSD-like license, which allows "modification and distribution". The University of Waterloo interpreted this to mean that you could modify Pine, or distribute an unmodified Pine, but not distribute a modified Pine. This was contrary to everybody else's interpretation, but they owned the copyright so they got to decide. (More recent versions have a different license).

    Just to be pedantic, it's not U Waterloo, but the University of Washington (http://www.washington.edu/pine/)

    Bzzzzt! Thank you for playing.

    Actually, Debian only uses package signing to authenticate the maintainer to the archive. Once the package has been installed into the archive, all the package signing information is lost.

    This always makes me do a double take when I'm driving through Oregon. In California, it's possible to find a place with full serve gas, but in Oregon it's required exclusively by law everywhere. I'm just curious, do you know why this is so there?

    I have no idea why Oregon decided to pass its High School Dropout Continuing Employment Act. I think it's a relic of times when pumping gasoline was actually dangerous (since even employees of the gas station who have not taken a government-certified training course are not allowed to pump gas).

    Also, it's not really full serve gas, but what they call "mini" serve. Kinda like self serve without the self, but none of the pluses you'd expect from full serve. (It is possible, but no common to find actual full serve gas in Oregon.)

    And if all you are familiar with is a book and a pen, then you may find that pumping gas is one of the few jobs still open to you. If you can find somewhere that has people that pump gas.

    There's a movie which actually features this version of Netscape. It's meant to look all up-to-date and modern, and it probably did for about 3 months, but now of course it looks ridiculously dated. I don't know why they did it, as the N was always announced as temporary.

    Unfortunately I can't remember which movie it was, although I've a vague feeling that it was a well-known movie in the action- or spy-type genre. Can anyone help me?

    You're probably referring to "Mission: Impossible", as I noticed this too when I saw it (this was back in the days of Netscape 3).

    Q1. How can I rename root? (I want to install a 'fake' root on my system. I do this with NT :) It won't stop the determined hacker, but its enough of a smoke screen.

    Edit /etc/passwd and change the string ``root'' to whatever name you want to give it. (You may also have to edit /etc/shadow if you're using shadow passwords.)

    Q2. Does root always have user id zero? What part of the source can I change to remove this hard-coded number? (Yes I'm aware that many things would break.)

    Yes, it is UID 0 that is magical. I wouldn't even know where to begin to go about changing this (or why you'd want to). I would also make the following comment:
    #include <security/obscurity.h>

    Indeed another witch hunt. It seems the blackdown people got what they wanted in the first place: a port of the SUN JDK to linux. It would be a nice gesture of SUN if they gave the blackdown people some credit though. But on the other hand this is only a beta release and SUN is probably not giving much attention on packaging, documentation and such right now.
    However, Sun is billing this as a Release Candidate, which (at least in my mind) means that everything should be as it is going to be for the final release.
