well, maybe this is offtopic but... why isn't more effort being put into exploring our oceans? They compose upto 70% of the earth's surface, and are right here in our backyard. Yet when everyone thinks of the expanding human race, it's always in the space direction -- never seawards. It's quite possible that in a few years we may have artificial gills to survive underwater. If that happens, there's could be a literal explosion in the space available to humanity. Why isn't this in the public consciousness and the budget allocation?

I doubt that the source code has been made available to "Dan Jackson". Relveant quote from the post original program's author made on the newsgroup:

Please note that right now this is VERY alpha. It's the first release. It also is available only as a binary, for Windows console. I wrote a GUI in ASM, but porting it to WINAPI is a pain in the arse... I won't bang on about it, but it's pathetic that it's easier to code in ASM than C on the Windows platform. The original was written under *NIX --- but I'm not willing to distribute the source just yet, for a variety of reasons.

There WILL be a polished GUI, as well as a source release in the future. I am unable to post here anonymously (and hence using a public library system and some vulnerable machines for this post) so, updates will probably NOT be announced here, unless someone is willing to play proxy for me.

and you, my highly-learned friend, are WAY off base. The education system in India is VERY good, it's just that it is skewered in favor of the middle-class--those who are poor can find it difficult to complete education. IMHO most people over here are doubtful of the benefits of education and hence do not complete it, even though banks are willing to give educational loans. Even the people who do complete higher education are disenchanted with it and just do it for the "degree".

Some places such as Bihar and Orissa have literacy rates around 30% and you think some memo about linux in schools is gonna make a difference?

  7. Knoppix? on Debian-Installer Alpha Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

I really hope that the Debian installer would have support for autodetection and configuration of all installed hardware, something like Knoppix (which is based on Debian) does. I know you can manually configure everything, but having all the hardware already known to it detected and configured would be great. This would mean that Debian would again be on the innovative edge of GNU/Linux distros...Debian does have the reputation of being a slow-moving, but stable distro.

Often, you have no alternative ISPs or ISPs which provide exactly same TOS (only diff is price). Also, ISPs over here (in India) block certain services of other ISPs (eg. voice telephony) or some arbitary sites, as and when they wish and you have no say in it.
