Maybe the newspapers in Back To The Future : Part II don't seem so far fetched now.. remeber the headlines & articles used to change and you used to get embedded video and stuff? Might not be quite paper thin, but I guess the technology will continue to evolve.
Couple that with some kind of inbuilt WiFi reciever (complete with city wide WiFi network) and there it is.
I work in a job as a Computer Technician, and people keep saying to me they really want to get an LCD screen 'because it looks cool' - fair enough I suppose, but why pay for a 17" mid range LCD screen over a 21" Natural Flat top of the line CRT monitor? Ok, it saves on some desk space..
Its a no brainer for me.. i'd still put my money on CRT every time.
Well the majority of computer users are still susceptible to all the thrills & spills that electricity can throw at you. Surges, spikes, and powercuts are still common place - and not everyone has a UPS under their desk (despite their low cost these days).
Plus, and lets be honest, Windows isn't THAT solid still.. whilst I think Windows XP is one of the best systems Microsoft have ever produced, I have still seen a few random resets and blue screens since using it. I think journalling filesystems definately still have a place.
I simply cannot afford the outlay on an Apple machine capable of running OSX at a good pace.
I think its a wonderful OS, and I think the Apple hardware is ace.. but I can only afford either a PC or an Apple. Right now, the Apple doesn't do the things that I need from my Wintel PC so I won't be switching any time soon.
If Apple released OSX on x86, then I would be a happy happy man:)

Hm.. well I tried to like it. And I agree that being able to drive around listening to your own music collection is a big bonus.
But having being through two totally different specced machines and running into problems both times, I just gave up with GTAIII.

GTA3 Multiplayer

I believe Rockstar cited issues with the way in which the game generates the cities & the objects in it during the game as the main reason for not including multiplayer.. trying to keep all of that data syncronised between multiple hosts would be a challenge - it can barely keep track of whats going on in a single player game, let alone a 16 player LAN game.
I have to say, the whole GTA3 experience on the PC has been a big let down anyway. One single patch which never fixed the multitude of graphics glitches.. Vice City might be getting rave reviews, but I dont think I am even going to bother.
We are currently in the early stages of a Cisco IP phone rollout at our college.. the technology seems very interesting yet it still has a few bugs - the Cisco 7940 phones we have are running new firmware versions but we keep experiencing irritating little gremlins with them.
I am looking forward to these phones though.. as it is our employer just wont buy us mobile phones of any kind - it seems that senior management need them (on $75k salaries) but us on 1/5 of that have to use our own despite going off site and being around the building quite often. As the company is keen to explore wireless technology & ip telephony even further, these seem like a sure fire purchase!
A great idea.. no recurring phone bills, better range than radio handsets (provided we install a few hefty wireless base stations) and it ties into our existing phone system:)
Novell should attempt to bring over NDS & create a working Novell Netware Client for Linux. I'd seriously be ditching Windows on my work PC if I could get that, but as it is, I cannot get my job done without it.
They are a bit too big headed about their importance though.. they say they haven't had someone like Novell to support the Linux kernel? Oh? So we'll just have to make do with support from companies like HP, SGI and IBM. Some of those guys have been in the industry a lot longer than Novell so their experience & support is more than enough for me!:)

My best (similar) memory was a few years back.. was sat on the bank of a lake fishing with my father and could hear this quite loud rumbling noise. Looked up to see a Lancaster, a Spitfire, and a Hurricane in formation fly straight overhead. They then proceeded to land at Coventry airport.
Quite a surprise as there didn't appear to be any kind of air show on.. pretty magical!
Well I dont know if Microsoft is on some kind of suicide mission spree lately.. their latest effort to try to take on Google seems like a total waste of time. They consider Google to be a threat to their business, and plan to release a better search engine.
But Google are masters at the search engine now - everyone loves them, they have an (almost) clean image, and they are fast becoming sure fire IPO candidates even in this shaky.com era. I dont know what Microsoft are going to achieve from taking on Google, OR the industry giants you mention in your post.
Well reading the article, it seems like the movies are going to be compressed into some kind of MS proprietry format from now on at these digital theatres, but regardless of whatever quality I have seen these files in, MPEG has always seemed sharper & generally better all round.
No I wont make the usual 'is that BSOD supposed to be in the middle of that film' type gag, but I do find this quite a weird move. MPEG has always been, in my opinion at least, one of the more superior video formats. VideoCD uses MPEG, and doesn't DVD?
Well I dont know if that picture is the product you are talking about, but I can't help but notice an 'ATI Graphics' branded card on the top right hand side. Last time I checked, that ususally got stamped on graphics cards!:)
I have to do the 'family tech support' for relatives in a neighbouring town.
I appreciate that its for family, but its a real ballache - especially when you have to take days off from your real job, spend money on fuel and drive over to them only for them to expect it as a freebie because you are family.
I think from now on, if I ever get asked if I can build a 'cheap PC' for family, i'll just point them at the Dell website or somethin:)

Well, looking at our comments.. I'd say that mine was at least mildly entertaining whilst yours quite pointless & insignificant.
Speak for yourself.. I just skipped the article and headed in here to read the comments. No 'cool scientific papers' for me ;)
