Debian users might not be representative of Linux users. Certainly not newbies.
but they're representative of debian users. and this is a poll to determine the needs of debian users. newbies....well, they shouldn't be installing debian by themselves until debian decides that a GUI installer might not be a bad thing. I'm guessing it'll get into stable by 2011. Maybe.
but we're not done here yet!

what does fairness have to do with it? drafting someone[1] is a lot cheaper than paying someone[2].
[1] "here's your gun, that's your terminal, btw, try to hack into iraq by next week cos that's where we're going to be and if you don't like it, let me introduce you to jail"
[2] "I want to hire you. To go someplace unpleasant and do something complicated. For a long time, I'm not sure how long. Wow, that's a lot of money."
no, because it's not a word. you're looking for the word viola (there's supposed to be an accent on the A at the end; which would make it different from the instrument. it's italian I think.)
i love that joke. (my favorite variation is the t-shirt with "my other computer is your linux box" on it...)
i flipped through this book recently at a borders after i had been given a specific vulnerability testing assignment at my large-lan-going-wireless-in-areas place of employment. (roughly, the assignment was "the box is over there...um...bring it down if you can. if not, make trouble. for us, not users.") and this book gave me some ideas on wireless sniffing (although no Kismet on windows REALLY REALLY REALLY SUCKS).
I read a comment about how the book doesn't go in-depth into management stuff (corp security policies, etc)...if you're looking for that in an O'Reilly book, you're wasting your time.
can it convert wma to mp3? that's a feature that would be veeeeeeeery convinient (especially for those converting their wma files from windows media player to mp3s for itunes, like me).

"Redhat's not shrinking, it's pining for the fjords."
Redhat's been bleeding users -- by attrition if by nothing else. Yes, these are people who would not have otherwise paid for the distro. That's fine and dandy but it's not going to stop the users going away. This includes corporate users who were sucking off the RH teat. People want their linux free, and if they're not going to get paid, on-demand support for it anyway, they'll go with something with a strong security record and a strong policy of "let's not fuck with the customers". Oh, Hello.
Unless RH does something to increase their numbers -- things like, oh, not forcing upgrades every 6 months. I personally know companies that still use and deploy redhat 5.2. They're not going to change their product just for the hell of it.
back in 1996/97 I downloaded some faith no more and mr bungle live/b-sides from the Caca Volante FTP server. (Think it was a live version of "Everyone I went to high school with is dead").
Actually, I would rather see one universal distro that could become whatever you want it to be - anything from a single floppy firewall that runs on a 386, to an everything but the kitchen sink super desktop system, or perhaps one element of a beowulf cluster.
It's a shame he keeps trying to improve the original trilogy while completely screwing up on the new one.
no, that's not a shame. that's par for the course -- the movies that come after the fame and fortune always suck more than the i-sold-my-blood-to-buy-the-film-stock originals.
What is a shame is that he's killing a lot of the fond memories that fans have of the originals by making the prequels SUCK ASS and i fear he's going to kill the originals with too much tinkering.
Terrorists of today could reproduce 9/11 quite well (though with different targets, of course). The only difference is that the government is given more power. The only people subject to the power are innocent.
so...you're saying that criminals don't obey the law?! SHIT! does the government know this?!
no, you're wrong. I (and several friends) have had this happen -- I have a fairly large collection of mp3s at work (~15 gigs) and itunes just kept crashing with that annoying windows "do you want to send MS a bug report?" error. That's called crashing, not being "temporar[ily] disabled". I don't expect iTunes to fly through 15 gigs of mp3s and sort them all on the fly, but I do expect it to not completely choke on it.
Any free (as in beer) WMA -> MP3 converters would be handy now, too. Would have been a very nice touch for iTunes to have that (or at least the ability to play WMA).
all politicians are "temporal" (sounds like you mean "temporary" instead, btw.)
Politicians come and go, laws stay in place for longer and are much harder to change.
first, label everything clearly.
2nd, document what you've done. print documents, in case there's no computer around to read them on. screenshots or logs of what you typed and have done is better than handwritten notebooks.
3rd, train someone in the Why and How of a system and it's response and they'll figure out the What on their own, usually.
also, check out this article at kuro5hin and then do what seems more useful.
where's the debian.deb of this already. I tried it out on a RH9 system and loved it but the latest version for debian is 3.something. Installing it from source is a mission since everything is in a seperate package and needs to be done in a specific order. (There's an auto-downloading/installing script but I was not able to get it to work on my woody box.)

Earth first! We'll mine the other planets later!

you need to read that .sig again.
damn...time to apt-get dist-upgrade.
...well, fucking, DUH.
you're new, right?

I think the phrase you're looking for is "turnabout is fair play." He didn't ask them for permission to use the music they control.

Gore's a big part of government? Not lately he hasn't been; and it doesn't look like he will be any time soon either.
...the website is here
if could get debian stable to do that, i'd be a happy guy indeed.

especially since napster still hasn't started up again...
