Yes, the code base does not matter, in their eyes. I think Longhorn is just going to be a bells and whistles OS. It will not really exibit innovation as far as the Windows GUI goes. The innovation will be restricting the 'home' version so that it will not compile squat. We have already seen the beginnings of this with XP. If they can release a very limited eye-candy version that consumers gotta have then that is what they will do. Take a look at the dev site, you will not see any of the security or integration to networking specs, except to say what the OS will do for your music and picture/media files. It is not targeted at servers or even home businesses at all. You can bet it will be cheap even in 64 bit version. It might even be for 32 and 64, at the same price. But the proffessional edition, that can run compilers will cost through the nose.

The reason why you see coke being drunk in movies is that coke ponies up. My take is that MS just doesn't come across with the cash! They could be all over the silver screen if they decide it will help them. Seeing that they are already in the Media business big time they don't need it. They get you at home, hell they even get you on /. Why should they shell out on movies that might not even be on the screen for longer than 2-3 weeks. MS does not gamble with advert dollars. The movies that are by leading directors and will star name actors have companies pounding at the door with check book in hand, trying to out bid each other. Seems MS does not play this game, yet. If Longhorn turns out to be a consumer flop, you can bet that this will change. Bill will suddenly warm up to the movie media big time.

When the most important alpha features are playlists and pictures, the interest in this software for hackers will be nil.

If they win we can all stick are heads between our legs and send money to Redmond. If the polititians and judges are bought off to this extent, then it is the signal that the largest part of the software industry has become a corruptor of human rights and perhaps even the very Constitution which it relies upon for freedom of enterprise.

Voiding the right of lawfull property owners to do as they see fit with their property, even give it away, would be a grave blow to the American Constitution. This blow could become fatal. So if I read this correctly; The SMP process core code that IBM alledgedly appropriated and then contributed to Linux are the problem? Or is the idea that SMP code is not the issue? As I read the SMP procedural call they seem to be quite generic, the code for ALPHA, smp.h and all the other SMP libs seem to be based around essentially the same sets of procedure. If SMP procedure is not patented then SCO has not got a leg to stand on, and deserves swift economic death! Which will surely happen if they stop receiving fudge funds from Redmond.
