  1. NO PIRACY! on Speaking Out For Free Software In India · · Score: 1

I don't understand this. Is piracy so prevalent in india?? No, it is not. No colleges use pirated software (atleast RECs and IITs). Companies don't use pirated software (unless, its a mom and pop shop). Privacy is prevalent among only home users (students etc.). Revenue from this group is not really important for MS.

This is not entirely true. IAAI (I am an indian). It is true that privacy is rampant among small software companies and large number of individuals. Why will a state govt. do something illegal? Big indian companies and some selected schools would never use pirated software.

  4. Things to look for in "new" AI on Keep Playing With AI · · Score: 1

There are recently a couple of articles on slashdot regarding learning in robots, games etc.. I have read some comments who said what is so new about this... people are doing it from years. I think what people should look for is how "generic" the system can be. One type of learning is just store all the moves of previos games in database and just get the move based on the current position on the board. Obviously, this is not really "generic".

not really. look into currency conversion.
1.00 United States Dollars = 8.27710 CNY. and also look at the living standards of china. if you take all this into account, this 750 million$s will be atleast 6-8billion CNY which is a lot of money

remember, this is in future where laws might be different. They have made the pre-crime laws in that way. One thing that I felt missing was, the "time" they actually spent in the prison. May be they spend 72 hrs or a couple of months which is kind of counselling thing which you are talking about. It was never told in the movie that the "pre-crimers" are locked up in the prison for life.

  9. "Semantic Web" on What's It Like to be Google's Boss Techie? · · Score: 1

    Hello Craig,
Google might provide better results if the web is more structured right? Is google involved in developing any standards for authoring web pages (e.g., RDF, WebOnt etc.)? How about a GUI for assembling a complex query (" I need a ticket from Boston to Atlanta for 100$ etc.". Kind of stuff which semantic web claims to do?

And also is google willing to give the data that have been collected from the past years for academic research purposes?

    thanks

  10. Stability of Companies on Is it Wrong to Accept an Employment Counter-Offer? · · Score: 2, Informative

You might want to look into the stability of companies as a factor before taking any decision. Most (software) companies consider joining date as one of the criteria while doing a layoff. In the worst case, if a layoff happens at both companies, you have more chances of suriving the layoff at the old company rather than the new company

I totally disagree with you atleast for the above person. "Programming is art not a science". Computer science attempts the art of problem solving to a science. You said "great computer scientists who are mediocre programmers (usually of the thoretic cs kind)". I feel that they might be mediocre programmers not because they lack programming skills but they don't even try to program well. For them, problem solving is proving a theorem whereas for a programmer problem solving is writing a program.

  12. My School Dept. just switched from Solaris/Linux on A Strategic Comparison of Windows Vs. Unix · · Score: 1

My dept. is school just switched from Solaris/Linux to Win 2k. Believe me, most of students and professors are fairly sophisticated users. Main reasons (I think) are because of administration and cost. For one sun spark, we can get 3 or 4 pcs. Our dept. didn't have system admistrator as such (we have relatively small compuer lab). So the graduate assistants end up being lab technicians. Most of these lab techs get intimidated by unix env and end up having misconfiguring and there by having security holes. We then had to wait for University unix people for fixing the mess. So, our lab director decided to switch from solaris/linux to win2k (with roaming profiles). Last time, I heard, students are feeling ok. Oh our dept. is some what related to computer science (actually it is Artificial Intelligence :) ).

Something wrong with GPL?
