One thing I found to be interesting is the fact that this spammer blames filters exclusively for his decreased cash flow, but I don't think that this is the only reason he's not making as much money off of spam anymore. A big reason, in my opinion, is the fact that there aren't as many newbies on the internet as there were 5 years ago. You have to realize that *newbies* are the key to successful spam; most everyone regardless of their intelligence is able to differenciate between spam and regular email after about a year on the internet (at the very most). So while the internet is growing, the success of spam as a marketing medium will not.
Lots of people out there seem to like to submit case mods to/., but every time their servers get pummeled before anyone can see the pics. I guess these guys are better at -building- servers, not -running- them.;)
I don't trust any report that uses the phrase "hack attack". At least "information superhighway" seems to have been eliminated from the English language.;)
I've never had a problem configuring X, even when I was a newbie I found out about the xf86config and RedHat's Xconfigurator programs. As for changing resolution on the fly, apparently the author was unaware that you can use ctrl+alt and hit the plus key to increase your resolution, and the minus key to decrease it.

What you say about forgetting the qwerty layout is not unique by any strech. Myself and nearly a dozen other dvorak typists have all faced this difficulty while sitting down at a friends computer. However, this summer, I found myself working a great deal with Sun machines which did not support dvorak, and was forced to type in qwerty again. Interestingly enough, it seems that you have to "re-learn" qwerty again; though after enough experience, I can switch between the two layouts with relative ease.
Unlikely. Until freenet becomes even partially usable, I don't see it being a reasonable P2P network for filesharing. Too many leeches and not enough people willing to donate bandwidth.
Maybe someone should write a script that goes out, finds a bunch of music titles, and touches files on your hard drive...that is, make a bunch of "fake" music, that doesn't actually take up any hard drive space. So you run the script, it searches the billboard top 40 charts or whatever, then you get:
So suddenly, you have thousands of "illegal" mp3's, and essentially everyone becomes a supernode without actually providing any harm to P2P systems (given that you could block out all 0-length files). I dunno...just an idea.
I don't know about all of you, but all the lawsuits that the RIAA is waging is a clear indication to me that these people are loaded with too much money and not enough competition. Record labels are the only people that stand to lose profits from fileswapping; the arguements about the poor starving artists are essentially illegitimate. That being said, I think it's time to work on more shameless p2p protocols.;)
I like this idea for a number of reasons. First of all, people need to realize that the type of spam they'd be getting would be nowhere near the types of "illegal" spam. I don't ever recall getting penis enlargement ads or "hot teen spring beach" ads in my physical mailbox. Secondly, who's to say that you don't just give them an email address aliased to/dev/null? You'd then be killing 2 birds with one stone. =)
This is a pretty interesting story about http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/01/technology/01KOM A.html>the 'last' HD manufacturer in the U.S., and reasons why the industry is ailing...

This is really old news. I remember seeing the image on the Windowlicker track about six months ago when rumours first started circulating about it on the internet. I'm kind of curious why people are raising a big fuss about it now...it was pretty widespread news among fans a long time ago.

CW: What if you have to go to the bathroom or get up to get a Coke?
JK: I guess there's a certain amount of tolerance for going to the bathroom. But if you formalize it and you create a device that skips certain second increments, you've got that only for one reason, unless you go to the bathroom for 30 seconds. They've done that just to make it easy for someone to skip a commercial.
Ok, so you're allowed to go to the bathroom. But just don't be in there too long buddy! We'll have you taken to court for violating your contract!
hahaha....I am in your camp too, it would appear. I love reading Katz's posts, because they remind me of a small child completely naive about anything going on in the world. "Mommy, why do people fight wars?". =)
And, as a consequence, the rest of us slashdotters are like the big brother, ready to punch him in the gut and tell him to shut the hell up.
This seems like another Microsoft "Big Bad Wolf" story, but it seems like a bunch of hype from another jerk congressman. Given how easy it is to get passports (does anyone here actually *use* hotmail for anything important?), there is no way that this will ever be a legitimate form of identification. Given that Microsoft is still in the courts for the antitrust lawsuit, I think this story is utterly unrealistic. And thank god for that. =)
My college is currently ranked #1 in the nation for undergraduate engineering, which includes the Computer Science department here. And in fact, I've had several final exams which were completely open hard drive. That's right...you can bring a laptop, and anything's fair game (no net access, though). Cheating here is barely ever mentioned at all. Better to give students the benefit of the doubt and have them prove it with their work then to go after them with witch-hunts.
It has some minor niggles...
Niggles? Wtf does that mean? Should I be offended?
omg...another rose student! word. But I don't think they do C++ in CS101 anymore...the course is now called "CSSE 120". Stupid administration.

Here's a code segment from the linux kernel demonstrating good commenting practices (from file /arch/sparc64/kernel/process.c)
dump->magic = SUNOS_CORE_MAGIC;
/* fuck me plenty */
dump->len = sizeof(struct user);
dump->regs.psr = regs->psr;
dump->regs.pc = regs->pc;
dump->regs.npc = regs->npc;
dump->regs.y = regs->y;
memcpy(regs.regs[0], u_regs[1], (sizeof(unsigned long) * 15));
dump->u_tsize = (((unsigned long) current->mm end_code) - ((unsigned long) current->mm->start_code))

Kinda weird that this website gave such a stunning review of Apache. Especially given that they switched their webserver from apache to IIS. Hrm.
God only knows what type of radiation this thing will produce. A bit of brain cancer, anyone? =)
