I installed all the XP Pro critical and security upgrades to my home box as soon as I finished the install (with SP1). The Windows File Search function stopped working, Media Player immediately crashed at startup, and Yahoo Messenger didn't work. Had to re-install XP. This was a brand new install, not an upgrade. So I'm a bit leery of doing any more updates. Yes I did do the update for the latest worm.

I did download and install thie patch. But when I did the big honkin' Windows Update and took all the critical/security patches - Yahoo Messenger stopped working, Windows file search stopped working, and Windows Media Player crashed immediately on starting. So I'm a little leery of that big "Windows Update" button, thank you very much. And if I was an admin with a lot of systems to patch, I'd be even more worried.

I did the Windows Update thing as soon as I installed XP Pro. Then the Windows File Search stopped working, Yahoo Messenger stopped working, and Windows Media Player wouldn't start at all. The fix was to re-install XP. Maybe that's why some people haven't/don't/won't use(d) Windows Update. The File Search issue is a known problem, according to Windows Annoyances, but I've never seen a mention of exactly which patch _breaks_ which other piece of the system!

The article says n-grams are "Phrases like these, called "N-grams" (with N representing the number of terms in a given phrase)". I've always used n-grams as character counts, using a sliding window over the text. For example, the 5-grams of the phrase "for example" would be

[for e][or ex][r exa][ exam][examp] and so on.

Using n-grams this way helps with things like mis-spellings. Mr. Metlin (parent of this) used the character definition is his paper. N-grams are widely used in Information Retrieval Research.
