    I totally support something like this, and believe in the future, a basic income system will be inevitable in most modern societies. The current welfare systems are too complex, shaped by special interests, people exploiting loopholes, or gaming the system for benefit. There is too much abuse, wastage and a large chunk of the population feels a sense of resentment.

    Shift to a basic income for all, and you now have a level playing field. It is more efficient, it is harder (or impossible?) to abuse, and no one can argue that laziness or poor health decisions or poor financial decisions are being rewarded. All, from CEOs to Rockstars to unemployed alcoholics are being given a basic income.

    The two downsides to something like this :

    1) It will be much harder to find individuals willing to do certain categories of high risk or menial labor. You would end up having to pay a LOT more.
    2) Inflation for certain goods and services could eat away any gains that a system like this could bring. It is similar to how lowering interest rates does not increase house affordability or put more people in homes, instead it just causes house prices to go up and affordability to remain the same.

    It is actually very simple.

    I ran the software engineering department at a previous job. Despite my and my boss's vehement objections we outsourced our entire software development team to India to reduce costs. I was to manage them remotely.

    We made it work for a while, but in the end we did it by replacing 5 US developers with an office of about 20 in India (15 of whom were developers, rest were support staff like HR, LAN admin, Office manger, etc.) and I was able to show to our CEO that the cost of the India office was about the same as our US development team with just 5 people.

    We shut down the India office, and retained 4 of the best developers there, paid them US salary (high five figures to six figures USD annually) as individual free lance consultants, and had them work remotely. I required that they get paid a US salary, if they weren't worth a US salary then we might as well hire someone in the US. We then hired a few developers in the US who would also work remotely (Our company was growing and so were our software development needs). The point was to higher few good developers instead of a lot of cheap ones, regardless of location.

    Years later, four of the five developers from India continue to work for that company as freelancers, earning a US wage in India. The 5th one quit to head the engineering department for a major indian website.

    We seem fine filtering out the sea life with our fishing nets. The smaller stuff is actually more robust and quicker to regenerate than the bigger fish stocks we are depleting. Atleast in this case we are doing something constructive over all. So what if a little algae and plankton get sucked up too. It's not like they are an endangered species.

    There are other forces involved.. currents, water densities due to fresh water inflows, tides, topography, etc.. I do not personally understand these forces involved, I am just listing out what I think could be factors... but for instance the pacific side of the panama canal is widely known to be 8 inches higher than the atlantic side.     China, not the US is the world's largest producer of CO2 emissions. And it is by a WIDE margin. China's CO2 emissions are almost double the USA's.

    This does not mean that the USA isn't contributing to the problem. It definitely is.. but even if the US were to drop it's emissions by a Quarter (which is a LOT) it would barely have a 3% impact on worldwide CO2 emissions. I have no way of estimating the impact on the US economy if it were to drop it's emissions by a Quarter.

    My point is even though you are right, the outcome of this debate in the US is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. My point is we are f*cked, this is a run away train, and there is no organizational or political entity big or strong enough to stop it.

    Obviously, I imagine an upskirt picture does not reveal any more than what you would see at a beach in any western country. I think the issue is that, a person being made to reveal more of herself than she is consenting to, to a person she does not know, and usually without her knowledge. It would be the equivalent of someone being forced to take off her skirt in public without her consent.

    Also, what if the woman is not wearing any underwear? It is her business if she is, or is not, and by wearing a skirt she has a reasonable right to privacy in that matter.

    I think that bike is pretty cool, and I've been lucky to never have a bike stolen, but at that price tag, they better have put a LOT of thought into security before I would consider buying one.

    Most decent programmers will find themselves in your position at some point in their careers. I did too. I know nothing of your financial situation and commitments (mortgage/family/etc.) but don't take a pay cut if you can at all help it. The fact that you feel any uneasiness would seal the deal.

    I would readily agree to a pay cut in only the following situations :

    1) Need a job desperately and gotta make rent. Hopefully this situation never arises
    2) Major promotion or opportunity in a company I strongly strong believe in. The idea being that I will work my ass off for peanuts, but believe in my heart that I will come away with a huge sum of money at the end, or the ability to make a huge sum of money.
    3) I am going to work for or with someone who is absolutely exceptional and is going to be teaching me something I couldn't already learn on my own.

    It does not sound like you are getting any of those three. If you are bored, keep looking for a better or different job. In the meantime, If you want to scratch your intellectual itch, do it on the weekends.

    I am sick and tired of this racism against Mexican and latin american people. I do not find your racist joke funny. It is also perpetuating a completely inaccurate stereotype. Google "Mexican fertility rate" and educate yourself.

    US Fertility Rate = 1.89 Births per woman
    Mexican Fertility Rate = 2.28 Births per woman

    US Life expectancy = 78.64 years
    Mexican Life expectancy = 76.89 years

    I am not Mexican or latin american. Mexico, and most of latin america, have a LOT of social, cultural and economic issues. But give them some respect, they aren't backward savages like most american's seem to believe.

    This is an issue that you can see Amazon and users taking seriously. If you notice Amazon allows you to meta moderate reviews, as well as comment on reviews. I have spotted a lot of fake reviews by reading comments on reviews, and I make it a point to comment on fake reviews as well providing my rationale for why I think it is a fake review. Just like on slashdot, community moderation is key here.

    Amazon also provides an additional level of verification with the "Amazon verified purchase" where by Amazon lets you know that this reviewer at the very least did purchase this product from Amazon.

    In the end reviews are like asking for advice. Often you get bad advice, often you get advice from people with hidden motives, and often you get good advice. Amazon's review system is just a representation of real life. Go anywhere on the web, or go call up some real estate agents/mortgage brokers and ask them "When is a good time to buy a house?" and the answer will almost invariably be "If you can afford it, _now_ is a good time to buy a house". They have a hidden agenda they want to push.

    I am not singling out real estate agents though. They are doing their job. Dealing with people is dealing with hidden agendas. :)

    Agreed Completely.

    My boss doesn't have a college degree and he is a good deal sharper than I am (I have a Masters in Comp Sci.) When I look at a resume, or interview a candidate, I look at the education portion the same way I look at the hobbies section if the applicant has included it. Nice to know, but not important one way or the other.

    In fact, If a person spent 4 years of his/her life making some solid contributions to open souce projects (perhps became a core committer to some of them). I would actually be more likely to hire him/her than someone who had finished a 4 year college degree. Provided everything else was equal.

    I dont think anyone is BLAMING the stupid woman who gave away $400K to a liar (or group of liars).

    They are doing exactly what you did in your post "the person who left them there like that is, yes, pretty stupid."

    The reason scams such as the nigerian 419 one work, is that intelligence like everything else is distributed over a curve of some sort. By definition, approx. half the people you see everyday are of below average intelligence. Scams such as these target people who sit in the below the bottom 1% on the intelligence curve. Which explains their mode of operation, "if you blast this scam to enough people, eventually you'll find someone who'll bite". In other words, "if you look hard enough, eventually you'll find someone stupid enough".

    So what? Last I checked the United States of America was a country with a clear separation of church and state. Why do you CARE if he is a muslim, a christian, a jew , a hindu or an athiest? Do not vote for a president because he is swayed by his religious beliefs, NOT because he belongs to a particular religion. Don't vote for him even if he is a christian.

Race, religion and sexual orientation are all irrelevant to his ability to run this country. But no. thats too much work for you isn't it? Its much easier to be ignorant and prejudiced than to be informed and fair.
    Will he be a better president and have better policies than John McCain? That's what you should be thinking about. That's it. NOTHING else. So what if Barak Obama is a Gay, Muslim, Black man? If you think any of those three inherently affects his ability to run this country, then you are ignorant and frankly shouldn't be allowed to vote.

    Your observations combined with your ignorance of the subject are particularly vulnerable to confirmation bias. Once again, you show yourself to be going down the path of all prejudice. You sound like you'd likely be a closet racist/sexist too. Using your method of reaching conclusions, you could point out how minorities makeup a higher percentage of the prison populations of the united states than over all population ratios would suggest. So blacks and hispanics are criminals? Also they earn significantly less than whites... so they are lazy too? You give your powers of deduction too much credit. Like I said before, you technique is that used by most prejudiced people.

    I'm not living in turkey, I was brought up in the middle east till the age of 18 and I've been living in the united states since then.

    Do you know what a Hadith is? Do you know all the sects and sub sects of Islam are? Just as christianity has hundreds of sub divisions, so does Islam. Yes, that homophobic person you met considers himself a muslim just as much as I consider myself one. In the exact way that a roman catholic considers himself a christian in the same way a Mormon does.

    So you want o know how I justify my disagreement with HIS scriptures? Simple. He believes in those scriptures and I dont. He is obviously a Sunni muslim, since he beleives in Hadith. Shi'aa muslim do NOT believe in Hadith.

    Let me educate you on what Hadith are. They are the 'claimed' sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Sunni beleive they are accurate and unaltered and so should be followed. Shi'aa believe they have been made up and manipulated over the years and should not be treated as scripture that must be followed.

    If you choose to overcome your prejudice you can educate yourself some more on the subject by just reading a few wikipedia articles on the bits I have mentioned here.

    Ofcourse there is the possibility your confirmation bias will kick in again to help protect your previous conclusions.

    Either way, I know the world is filled with people like you. I do not hope to change your views, I just intend to stand up for mine.

    I apologize for my previous comment. It was made in anger. Apart from your prejudice showing, your post appeared to be that of a reasonable person.

    How many muslim's do you know? How many countries have you known them in? How many different age groups, races, social classes have they belonged to?

    You think that by talking to a handful of muslim's you have a grasp on the entirety of the beliefs of 1 billion+ people?

    I am a non-homophobe muslim. My wife is highly educated and an equal partner in my marriage, she does not wear a burkha or even a scarf. I do not think Jews are evil, that America is a great Satan, or that infidels should be slaughtered en masse.

    Do not presume to think that I'm a non-practicing muslim either. I've never had alcohol, or eaten meats I'm not allowed to. I fast, and I pray. I contribute to my mosque, I pay zakah, and have been for umrah several times. I hope to go for Hajj soon. Insha'allah.

    The assumptions you make from a handful of individuals that you do not understand are the foundation of all types of bigotry. From relatively harmless ones like 'women are bad drivers', to dangerous ones like 'black people are dumber than whites'.
