  1. Games - it should do fine with most on Apple Releases Mac Mini · · Score: 1
You won't be using this mini-Mac for gaming

That depends on what type of games you want to play. Will it play Doom 11 well? Maybe not, but it will be very capable of running MacMAME, which is pretty much all I play anyway. I currently run MacMAME on my relatively "lowly" dual-533 MHz G4 (MacMAME gets no kick from dual processors, so effectively it's a single 533 for MacMAME) and it can play almost anything available quite well. Obviously the older games work great and most newer games too. For some reason it doesn't do well with Puzzle Bobble 2, 3 and up (original Puzzle Bobble it handles fine), but it works great with, for example, Metal Slug 1, 2 & 3 (I haven't tried Metal Slug X yet) and pretty much everything else I've tried. And that's at only 533 MHz and with a Nvidia GeForce2 MX. The Mac mini specs blow my system away, so it should handle it all with aplomb.

  2. Can't use PS/2 mouse/keyboard directly on iPod Shuffle, Mac Mini, iLife '05, iWork · · Score: 1

It won't support PS/2 keyboards and mice out-of-the-box as it does not have those ports. However you can get a PS/2 to USB adapter from third parties.

Alternatively, when you order the Mac mini you can add an Apple keyboard and mouse package for $58 (wired), so not bad. No, it doesn't look like you can add just the keyboard - it's a package. You can buy the keyboard separately, but last I checked it was something like that price or more by itself!

I really doubt that iWork will be a Microsoft Office class of program(s) - it's unlikely it would have professional features such as change tracking, for example. If it were professional it would not have the "i" moniker. And that's super - I need a word processor, etc, to recommend to my Mom, and for myself for that matter. AppleWorks is an embarrassing recommendation, at best. iWork is desperately needed.

TV remote: buttons no longer work even remotely reliably. Also my Mom has a Sony TV that has a terrible high-pitched squeal. Fortunately for her she can't hear it! Sony quality? Needless to say, I won't be buying any more Sony equipment.

With new Mac users and hopefully increased market share, perhaps we'll see a return of kids software to the Mac. One can hope, anyway. Being the father of two kids, one 3 1/2, the other just turned 2, I was looking for kids software for them this christmas for their iMac, only to find that the two major players in kids software for their age group are now both PC only - Atari bought out the great Humongous which use to be cross platform, but now with Atari at the helm all their new software is PC only. Broderbund, purveyors of Reader Rabbit and more, is now PC only too. The only choice I have is to find old software used, almost all of which is for OS 9/Classic. Is there any company left developing software for 2 to 4 year olds that run on Mac OS X?

  12. Re:Inspiring? on The Real Story of Audion · · Score: 1

Err, couldn't they just let you change the comments in the comments field? As it is it's disabled for multiple selections. Wouldn't that make more sense? The Batch change is a kludge that they've tacked on - in fact I hadn't even found it (as you suspected). Thanks for letting me know about it though.

The issue there is what do you display in the comment field when multiple pictures are selected, and they all have different comments? Would showing a blank comment, yet editable, be misleading? I think it would. They disable it entirely to make it clear that this field does not apply when there is a multiple selection. I disagree that the Batch Change menu item is a kludge - it makes batch changes something that don't happen by accident. It's very explicit.

Now, I do find it annoying that you can't change the title of a picture simply by clicking on the title below the picture, ala changing a filename in the Finder, instead of having to select the photo, then move down to the lower left of the window to edit the title there.

One thing I really like about iPhoto is how no matter how many edits I make to a photo and no matter how long ago those edits were made, I can always get back to the original via Revert to Original. I.e. this isn't revert to saved, rather revert to version 1. A simple feature, but a really great one.

  13. Re:Inspiring? on The Real Story of Audion · · Score: 1

iPhoto has its shortcomings, but it is very good at what it attempts to do, and you are flat out wrong in some of what you say. Batch editing comments - try "Batch Change" in the photo menu. I'm not sure what you mean by "custom tags", but you can create your own keywords. In the Keywords palette select "New" from the pop-up menu. You can create any keyword you want. If you don't like the HTML export you can use 3rd party plugins to enhance it (try Better HTML Export). My guess is you are talking about an old version of iPhoto and not the latest. Much was improved since the early days. I can't imagine being without iPhoto now and, if nothing else, iPhotos' red-eye tool is by far the easiest and most effective I've seen. Make a rough (very rough) box around both eyes at once and click a button. Even my Mom can use it. It just works. That alone makes iPhoto an indispensable product.

  14. Diebold voting process on Election Day Discussion · · Score: 2, Interesting

At what point is my vote really cast - when I hit the "Cast Vote" button, or when the card is inserted into that handheld device? If the latter, they didn't show me what the device said. Was my vote really counted? I have no idea.

  15. One thing wrong in OS X on Jef Raskin On The Mac · · Score: 4, Interesting

OS X is great, but it certainly isn't perfect. For one thing it is still (and was in OS <=9, so no joy for Jeff) difficult to tell when an application is running and which application is top most. The user may be looking at some window but it may not be a window of the currently topmost application and so the behavior is not what they expect. It all started way back when with the advent of "Multifinder". Oh to wish for the good ol' days of one-app-at-a-time Single Finder.... ;)

I can't count the number of times I have had to explain, for example, that first you have to click in the AppleWorks document window and then the so-and-so menu will appear, because they had closed the last window in some other application and they are looking at an AppleWorks document, but AppleWorks is not the top application. The slightly grayed out title bar isn't much of a hint. Maybe background applications' entire windows should be grayed out/dimmed and more so (the content not just the title bar) to distinguish them from the frontmost app. Or translucent, although I find translucency to be wildly busy looking so I prefer the idea of graying out the entire window.

I use iPhoto to organize my photos and slideshows. I also use iPhotos red-eye tool because it is super easy and quick and usually works very well, better than any other I've tried. Even my Mom can remove red-eye. For more advanced editing I use Gimp.app which I have set as the double click action in iPhoto. One fantastic thing about iPhoto is that even years later you can go back and undo all the changes you made to a photo, even those done in the external editor, because it keeps track of it all. iPhoto is simple, yes, but it can be a valuable part of a more advanced toolset.

Apple couldn't win that argument in the past, why would they win it now? 160 is bigger than 128. End of argument. On the other hand there is the 10000 songs factor. With 160 kbps VBR WMA, you won't be able to fit as many songs on your player from the MMS as you would from the iTMS (in the imaginary world where you could have a player that plays either.) 10000 is way bigger than... well... whatever that 160 works out to.
