  1. Re:Answer is easy. on Americans Are Seriously Sick · · Score: 2, Interesting

I definitely have to agree with you on this one. I've lived in Iowa my whole life, and when I get out my bicycle to go for a ride or just walk around town, people stare at me in total horror - as if they've never seen someone move without a car.

I think the answer to this problem lies somewhere in a) reducing the amount of stress we put on ourselves and moreso on each other, and b) taking the initiative to do something that has lifelong benefits, e.g. at least 15 minutes of walking per day.

Thank you, Mr. Grumpus. No, I was not requesting that you personally talk to my boss. That was an attempt at humor to diffuse a potentially volatile situation. Obviously, it failed.

That said, I agree with another response to this comment that work bleeds too much into personal time. When I was hired here, there was nothing in the contract that said "Thou shalt work all hours of our choosing" - this was something laid out to my by my boss because of my explicitly stated aversion to him for being stuck here working late nights on things that I shouldn't have to be, because other people failed in their duties.

I'm not one to be slack in my duties, and I'd prefer to have all of my work done before I leave for the day. I do find that there is one important point to remember: it's just a job, it's not my life. Even a career is just a job, something you do to pay my bills and have money to feed my family. It's the people in my life that really matter, and I'd rather have time to spend with them than my boss and my desktop computer.

  3. Re:Why are we allowing work to control us? on NRLB Redefines 'Your Own Time' · · Score: 1

Want to talk to my boss then? According to my boss, since I'm a salaried employee, I shouldn't have the expectation that I work on a normal 40-hour workweek clock like a (said with a hint of disdain) "factory worker".

The problem is, there's no mandated compensation where I work for anything done outside of stated office hours.

If this is what my boss means by wanting the department to be more like the "corporate world", then I want off of the bus straight to hell now.

I can definitely sympathize with the 70% who feel they're not living up to their potential, and the 45% who feel discriminated against because their employer thinks they're too young.

I'd put myself squarely in those brackets.

Maybe I'm more valued than I think I am, but it certainly doesn't feel that way on most days. That could probably be helped by having a more positive work environment, and not the regular rat race.

  5. Improper comparison on Wireless Hijacker Dealt First UK Punishment · · Score: 1

The comparison used in TFA is inappropriate. Taking a joy ride in someone's car without permission is being likened to using their WiFi without permission? Unless you're using all of their bandwidth, you're not depriving them of anything.

I believe a more fair comparison would be passing by someone's home and being able to see what's on their television. You didn't pay for access to see what's on there, and you almost certainly were not granted permission to look in their window to see it.

Would it be suspicious to have someone standing outside your window watching your television? My vote is on "yes, creepy as hell." I'm pretty sure other laws or ordinances already cover that sort of thing in most localities though... There's no need to prosecute the guy for "stealing internet" unless his use is causing a drain on resources.

I wouldn't care if people used my WiFi if they weren't hogging it or otherwise using it improperly... which is why I have at least secured it with WEP-128. If you want in badly enough to crack my WEP key, more power to you ;-)
