  1. Going to Mars is teh stupid on Subcommittee Stops Human Mars Mission Spending · · Score: 1

No doubt, a mission to Mars might yield technical advances which could better life on our space rock. That said, there are large immediate problems here on Earth which require great technological pushes as well. I'm sorry, but screw Mars. We need massive pushes for energy independence, stem cell research, water acquisition etc. There is knowledge to be gained there and solutions developed will likely have a much greater impact upon our future.

We should secure the "future of humanity" by addressing our terrestrial problems, as opposed to solving extraterrestrial problems that will hopefully yield a technological trickle down. No doubt, I like Temperpedic pillows and freeze dried ice cream, but I'd also love for our country to never to funnel money into crazy nations chocked with bubbling crude.

Is the ideological battle really worth a hundred-something bucks and countless compatibility headaches?

Your water analogy is fairly ridiculous. Of some jerks screwed up a portion of my reservoir, and reduced the amount of water available to the entire county, I wouldn't be outside hosing down the driveway. I'd be forced to change my water consumption, regardless of whether or not I was to blame for the shortage.

  6. Re:Longevity of whales on Weapon Found in Whale Dated From the 1800s · · Score: 1, Interesting

Ya, but pigs and turkeys are raised on farms where they don't play a role in the surrounding ecosystem. They're also fairly plentiful.

As for the Inuit people, I'm sorry but traditionalism is no excuse for maintaining something that is this destructive. Times change, the Bowhead whale population has significantly decreased, and people have the means to get food elsewhere. There are somethings in the world that are bigger then antiquated hunting practices. Many would argue that the current rate of whaling is still unsustainable.

  7. Network providers don't innovate sh*t on No iPhone SDK Means No iPhone Killer Apps · · Score: 4, Insightful

    BS.
Anything innovative in that market is almost always created by a third party and proposed a network provider. And network providers usually find a way to botch those things by turning them into restrictive billable services or features.

The only innovative things network providers create are fees shorty, fees.

It is assumed Apple realized this devastating "beta" because they hate freedom and want the terrorists to win... and they've now won.

We will try to stay on top of this developing critical story.

I don't know what your graduate curriculum is like, but there's no way I would be able to get away with hiring someone else to do my thesis work. There is too much faculty oversight, the process takes too long, there are too many demands for new qualitative and quantitative research, etc.

In my humble opinion, faculty must be offering fairly generic curriculum if their curriculum can be exploited by lame paper writing services.

  13. I'll go one further on Why Work Is Looking More Like a Video Game · · Score: 1

No doubt, looking at game UIs or other UIs offers invaluable input. Yet, I would argue that it's more valuable to adopt the design and development process that the game industry has in place.

There is a reason why contemporary games often have fairly progressive and intuitive user interface solutions. As most game designer have realized, you need to have the visual communication folks on-board at the start, and they need to have input in to the design of communication tools. More often then not, desktop applications are designed by a software engineer and skinned by a graphic designer. This is fairly miserable approach.

All in all, things like CSS and JS have a lot of painful limitations for drawing content in the browser window. This is the issue that Flash, SilverLight, and JavaFX address.

I'm hoping that the migration toward high PPI displays and scalable vector graphics will really force people to rethink how things are drawn on the web.

  21. No "strained eyes, possible migraines?" No way. on The Future of Cinema - 'Real' 3D · · Score: 4, Insightful

Problem with this tech is that it is STILL stereo graphic. It's not volumetric, and therefore, the old eye strain problems will still exist.

OK, these guys may have developed a better way to deliver and display a stereo graphic image, but in the end, it's the same old crap we've seen for decades. You're still wearing stereo glasses. You put some glasses on, your right eye sees one image, your left eye sees another image, your brain converges the two images, but you can't focus on the depth of your choosing. Focus is predetermined by the film.

Human stereoscopic vision relies upon two mechanisms, convergence and accommodation. This cinema tech doesn't account for the latter. With this tech you still can't focus on depths of your choosing... as you would with a volumetric image or a real 3D object in the real world. These guys are trying to skirt around accommodation by limiting shots to particular ranges of depth. While this may help to minimize the problem, it doesn't eliminate it.

All in all... move along, nothing new to see here.

Eh, she had a senior administrative job. It's not like she could've majored in Bureaucracy Studies in order to prep for that position. What really mattered was experience, her ability to network, her ability to raise money, etc. Moreover, admission standards are typically set by department chairs who understand their department's student body and curriculum. In the end, those are usually the people who set the important benchmarks.

Quite frankly, there are a LOT of desk jobs in the world that don't require a college degree as long as you're a reasonably competent and experienced individual. Thousands of college students graduate every year and enter a professional career that has nothing to do with their former major. I imagine the only college skills they reference are the the basic reading / writing / critical thought skills acquired from 1st and 2nd year General Ed. For many, a BA or BS is little more then a piece of paper that allows you to apply to new stratum of employment.

That's not to say you don't specialized degrees for specialized fields, and that's not to day she shouldn't step down. However, those potentially "crushed dreams" probably have little do with her ability to do that job.
