  1. Re:Downloading Music on RIAA Almost Down To Pre-Napster Revenues · · Score: 1

do you seriously think that the woman would have ever bought that music if Kaaza wasn't there for her to use? People go and download free music because they can, it's fun to hear new stuff, and if they hear enough of it from someone, they may go get their CD at a store. Most people don't have CDRs to make their own music with.

There are some people that steal music, and end up not buying CDs because of it, but that is the miniority. It's also the people that come up to you, borrow your CDs, and make their own, before napster came along.
If I ever catch anyone downloading a whole album off me, I cut them off.

Intels decision to drop rambus in favour of DDR, DDRII, and dual channel versions of it isn't because of the desktop market at all. Which is what is misleading here.

Intel has always known that RAMBUS is not the best thing for servers, since servers need large amounts of memory. The serial configuration RAMBUS must be put it, along with its higher latency, leads to poor performance when in large amounts. This isn't acceptable, and doesn't happen with DDR, its the primary reason they are switching.

That and RAMBUS runs hotter then the P4 CPUs

  8. In university on Innovative Uses for Educational Technology Funds? · · Score: 1

Being in university myself, I'd like to see a few things changed at our school.

The first would be to hire someone full time that runs the web servers. I almost failed exams because they were down 4 of 5 days, and I needed some information from them. Its nice that they want to let students run the point and click windows environment, but it just isn't stable enough for their use.

The 2nd thing I'd love to see is more materials for the profs to use. Many will occassionally bring in their 486 notebooks and try to show us something with a projector from it. Of course they crash, and are awfully slow. All the content is also on their harddrive, and they have no wireless access. Each prof should be able to have a wireless network computer with them, and the projector to go along with it. Overheads are way outdated for the kind of applications engineering students use.

Of course, the dream is for the school to have notebooks for students. Our tution price is huge compared to the cost, and when we factor in our textbooks it might even be more benefical and cheaper to have just laptops for everyone. Many of our profs just wish everyone in class could have one, as it would really allow us to do things right.

  13. ATX is garbage on Improving Computer Form Factors? · · Score: 1

ATX was made a long time ago, and it isn't relative to todays technology. Our current chipsets and motherboards should have no problem fitting in a smaller size, although they may have to move from 4 layer construction, to 8 or more layers.

But there are a few things
#1 the floppy drive must die, there is no room on motherboards for the larger connector, just use USB storage space.

#2 Normal ATA needs to be thrown out the window, serial ATA is taking over, while each connector only holds one drive, they are much smaller, and the cables don't require a huge amount of space in your case like IDE.

#3 5.25 bays are massive, these things need to be shrunk, and having 4 slots in a standard ATX design is useless, I'd say 2 is the most, a DVD and CDRW you could use. Since you can get them in one unit, its more than enough space.

#4 Hard drive mounting needs to be fixed too, why on earth are they placed in such a bad area? You can put them just about anywhere on the case to save space.

#5 Your extra devices are killing space too. There is little need for 6 PCI and 1 AGP. A user with half a brain would have gotten a decent video card, with DVD decoding and tv out. If you plan to do video editting, you get a video in version too. This can be done with one slot, not 2 or 3 like some people are doing today. Since onboard ethernet/modem could easily be a standard. I only see reason for maybe 3 PCI at the most, another NIC, sound (which could be onboard too), and some other card.

#6 My last point, as said is to double side the boards. There are a lot of components that can be put on either side, and both of them are easy to access for upgrading.

These things would reduce a case to less than half its size. Micro ATX is ok, but not good enough, and few good boards even come in that size. Motherboard manufacturers need to get behind, make dual ethernet, and sound standard.

I knew the site was dead long ago, it used to be my favourite site, then they cut bandwidth, to the point where anyone trying to download something to watch was just stupid. It took hours to download a 30 sec clip on a connection which can normally do it faster than real time.

The whole model was stupid, and the site should have forced the company the ad was for to host their own damn commerical, as they were getting free advertising anyways, and half a dozen commericals draws not much bandwidth compared to the hundreds on the site.

I haven't visited the site in months, and then only to see it was still the most useless site on the web, as you can basically preview the commerical name...and thats about it.

I think gamers really need to start acting like they aren't 5 years old by not getting excited by big numbers. Realisticly 30fps in a game is more than playable, anything more isn't needed, and if you do it... well, you suck, and you shouldn't rely on hardware to help you win.

This time around, I really hope reviews do the right thing, and not benchmark the card, put the #s up and say "well, obviously this card is better than that" Even though one looks awful, and the other can't run future games efficiently.
