I have 2 friends that work in the fields mentioned above. I have even helped them install programs, games, updates, etc on their machines in their office.
Yes... damn them for making a number of good Wing Commander games after buying out Origin... the bastards! I'll also point out that, while I don't like them, what was Origin is still making Ultima Online games.
Buy a company, bleed it dry, close it down and let all the innovative product ideas and franchises rot.

Westwood and their C&C and Dune series
I'm really not even sure how you can say that with a straight face in response to an article about a new C&C game...
I may be talking out of my ass, but as far as I know, if they ring something up for $4.00 at the checkout, you pay and complete the transaction, they're SOL.
I doubt that. I assume that the French, due to the nature of their language, have a very clear conceptual boundry between gender with reguard to language, and a person's physical gender.
In the case of copyright, Eldred makes my favorite point. That copyrights sould be renewable but for an exponentially higher fee every year. That way the pomposness of the Disney's of the world that still make millions off of 70 year old charectars would not block out the rare but good old shows that have been abandoned.
Problem: That fucks over the small-time media creator that can't afford to pay for the huge copyright fees. It would give large media companies an even greater hold on popular culture, as they can still afford to hold onto even their smallest items, while the little guy cannot.
That's how it works in Canada... you're allowed to make a copy of anyone's music, as long as it's for your personal use. (read: you can borrow your friend's CDs, or CDs from the library, and copy them all, as long as the copies are for you to use. You cannot copy your friend's CDs and give the copies to someone else.) I'm really not sure what the legalities of online music downloading for burning to various media are, though... I don't think that's been tested with regard to the current law.
You can with the music in Canada as well(although, you can't do it with video). The laws surrounding our levy allow copying for personal use, regardless of the owner of the original media. I can borrow a friend's CD, or a CD from the library, or from any other sorce, and copy it for my own use. I can't, however, go off and copy a CD 30 times and give those copies to other people. I can lend my original CD to 30 people, one after another, and allow them to copy their own.
P.S. "month-iversary" doesn't make sense. Each year does he celebrate his wedding "year-iversary"?
At least it's better than 'one month anniversary'. The first half of the word comes from the latin annus for year. Something more appropriate might be, say, mensiversity (mensis being Lating for month.) However, nobody would have any clue what he was saying, so it would be rather pointless.
Is there some reason you can't just set up a distro how you'd like it on an appropriately powered machine and just use that? You can easily set it up so you can log in from elsewhere to admin it...
Didn't even see this until just now... Tons and tons of people bought Wing Commander 4... it had a huge number of sales for the computer game market at the time. Unfortunately it barely made money because Roberts went insanely over budget. This resulted in Roberts 'leaving' Origin.
You can just point the offending domain name to localhost so that it can't actually grab any of the banner ads. How you go about this depends on what OS you're running.
Privateer was released in 1993 when Origin was owned by EA... You also forgot Armada and Academy, neither of which could be remotely described as interactive movies. Secret Ops, while not quite the same, was less of an interactive movie than Wing Commander 1 or 2. I also doubt Prophecy said Interactive Movie on it.
Secondly, I'll point out that right on the Wing Commander 3 box it says "A CHRIS ROBERTS GAME", on the corner opposite the 'Origin Interactive Movie' logo... So even the box acknowledged it as a game, just like absolutely everyone else in the world.
However, none of this has anything to do with the post I was replying to, as I very much doubt anyone could be implying that the original Wing Commander was trashed to make way for Ultima Online.
No... Oring was purchased in 1992. Wing Commander 3 in 1994 was most definately produced when Origin was part of EA. Otherwise they wouldn't have had the needed cashflow to pay for the budget. Privateer was also released under EA (1993)
Pardon? There were 7 or 8 years of Wing Commander game development under Electronic Arts management... It's not like they were aiming for Ultima Online through the entire period. Either way, the cancellation of more Wing Commander development had a hell of a lot to do with the decreasing market for space-sims, as well as wanting to focus on Ultima Online style games. (A large amount of time and effort was also spent on a Wing Commander Online style game.)
don't think it's going to be such a big secret as they're going to give the list to ISPs (I think).
I can picture the conversation now:
Police: You aren't blocking the mandated sites!
ISP: But you won't give us the list! If you do, we'll happily block them
Police: No, we can't, it's a secret. If you knew the sites you might visit them.
ISP:

Your tax dollars at work
Oh yeah just let law enforcement do what they want to do.
Soviet Russia that is what they do...this is the US!
So... in Soviet Russia law enforcement does what they want to do to you.
Ergo:
In America you do what you want to do to law enforcement.
I assume this horribly stupid joke logic holds.
(Actually, I feel dirty just for bringing this up.)
No, they get off of beating the crap out of student protesters.

Wait... doesn't everyone?
Yes, we do.

What, exactly, do you want that needs some sort of markup. What's wrong with displaying plain text books in, suprisingly, plain text?
But if you can hold a US carrier battlegroup, you can defend against anything.
What about 2 US carrier battlegroups?

yeah, typo, I meant to say mensiversary. Apparantly my fingers got confused and tried to write university or something, part way through the word...

Of course, you ignore the fact that cell phones have now, in some places, become *cheaper* than land lines...
I used to play that game for hours on my C64...

You're quite right... I assume he was refering to the series as a whole, which continued under EA management for 7 or 8 years worth of development.
