This is to distinguish them from police who work desk jobs. There's a difference. Good job on you immediately projecting your fear onto the phrase and then accusing the other of intentionally triggering you. This is called "psychological projection" and is a big problem among people who are not aware of their condition. I suggest you educate yourself, pronto, otherwise you'll jump to conclusions without a mat.
America is dominated by elites who exclude from power anyone who didn't go to elite universities.
Today's ruling class, from Boston to San Diego, was formed by an educational system that exposed them to the same ideas and gave them remarkably uniform guidance, as well as tastes and habits. These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with secular sacred history, sins (against minorities and the environment), and saints. Using the right words and avoiding the wrong ones when referring to such matters -- speaking the "in" language -- serves as a badge of identity. Regardless of what business or profession they are in, their road up included government channels and government money because, as government has grown, its boundary with the rest of American life has become indistinct. Many began their careers in government and leveraged their way into the private sector. Some, e.g., Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, never held a non-government job. Hence whether formally in government, out of it, or halfway, America's ruling class speaks the language and has the tastes, habits, and tools of bureaucrats. It rules uneasily over the majority of Americans not oriented to government.
South of the USA??! wtf dude your racism is showing. South of USA is where all the black people live, you're shitting all over them and got modded up to +4 that is some bullshit.
If he were a leftist, the story would have been buried and not given wide publicity. Confirmation bias. It would be in the same bin with all the stories where citizens defend themselves with firearms. Seen one of those lately? Yeah, that's what I thought...and yet they happen all the time.
Thus do the media fulfill their narrative purpose. If the facts don't fit the narrative, the facts get discarded - we all saw that with Ferguson.
That is a ton of writing to express butthurt. The idea that an American might one day feel superior to a European of any kind is anathema, isn't it? Didn't even take the opportunity to make the genocide jab when the Navajo was mentioned...boo...poor form.
Nah, that's a canard propagated by deliberately misleading sources. It's sad to see that so many educated people have fallen for such a transparent lie. It's like the Reichstag fire...a bullshit event that was used for the benefit of the ruling party. Truly tragic to see that happening in USA 2015, I thought people were more progressive than that today.
Derision that opposition has the nerve to exist, check. Desire for a one-party system, check. Wants money out of the pockets of the people and into the government, check. I am hearing more and more of these fascist posts these days and it is starting to scare the hell out of me. What is wrong with people who want the voices of dissenters and gadflies silenced?
Wow, someone has got some serious butthurt from having her preconceptions challenged. Ever had Birra Poretti or Stella Artois? It doesn't make Europe any less superior to admit that shitty beer is popular the world 'round. Don't feel bad by admitting it, there are still many other areas in which you can validate your self-esteem by feeling superior to those filthy commoner Americans.
Physicians don't do diagnoses like they used to. They look at you, consider your condition for all of 5 seconds, and prescribe whatever will get you out of their hair. They don't diagnose, they don't think, they don't care. When I had my condition a couple of years ago, one of the doctors actually asked me what tests I wanted to run. I was like, what the fuck, how the fuck should I know? But that's how it is. So what is there to do? Do your own research on the internet and become your own pathologist.:( And unfortunately there are tons of spammer optimized-for-google pages out there for every medical condition in the world. They all have a few paragraphs of useless copy and tons of ads inline. Go to a forum? It's all the same, pages of questions and few answers. So you have to spend tons of time learning about your symptoms from the ground up, and then try to guess what you might have, and then go ask a doctor for those tests. Good luck diagnosing yourself, because doctors don't do that shit any more.
Except that Communism explicitly exhorted its adherents to overthrow the US government. McCarthy was right, there really were Communists in the State Department, and they really did intend to use their positions to do exactly what their masters in Moscow commanded. Europe had thousands of such people, as KGB files revealed after the Cold War was over. And besides, who gives a shit about gun nuts anyway? Prison time would do them good, I'd applaud if the government went after them.
That would be great, if that was how municipal governments actually worked. However, local elections in 2015 are based on the race of the person running, and race-based voters only know "my people". A bad record of repairing the utilities isn't really an issue at all and certainly does not make local politicians unelectable.
That would be a great idea if it was reality. In reality, socialists don't desire to benefit from capitalism, they want to eradicate it and return the entire population to utter poverty as it was in the 20th century. Talk about a lack of critical thought! It's as if critical thought is only a weapon that is only meant to be used against the enemies of socialism. Two legs good, four legs better.
"I believe that now, immediately, there should be national sterilization for certain dysgenic types of our population who are being encouraged to breed and would die out were the government not feeding them."

Lots of people play games because they can't stand not having control over whatever happens. This is the dice-hating player. These people are also the worst at separating the game from the players (they get really mad when someone else conflicts with them, can't understand "it's just a game"). European style games are widely regarded as soulless and being nothing more than a couple hours of doing arithmetic. Fine for people with no imaginations.
People don't buy Monopoly for themselves. It's usually bought as a gift for someone else, and it is perhaps played once before being stored in the closet. It's not popular because it's a good game, it's the Paris Hilton of board games: popular because it's popular.
Another ignorant Westerner projecting her own values on a foreign society. Being paid "peanuts" in Western currency is actually quite a lot in Chinese yuan. It's certainly more than they could make back on the farm. Maybe we should actually talk to these people instead of assuming that we can hold opinions on their behalf?
Workers are mobile and they know it. Wages are up across the board in China, and not going down anytime soon. The workers will move across the street to a new factory at the drop of a hat. "We are holding a knife to their throats"? WTF? Are we in Bizarro World? Have you even been to China, or talked to a single worker? Who is "we"?
I'm curious: did anyone ever notice how Chile is a modern, safe country while the rest of South America is stereotypical? What happened in Chile that was different?
More importantly, what do Chileans think? Would they rather have followed the tide into far-left government and shared the fate of the rest of the continent? Or is the attitude, "Well, Pinochet was bad, but the alternative was much, much worse." Hmmm....food for thought. On second thought don't think - let's just uncritically parrot what we read somewhere, because it MUST be right.
Oh, I WISH I got paid by the ticket! But that's an ordinary job, being an author isn't. It's basically a sales job where you create the product. Like any sales job, you get paid according to sales. Boo-hoo, if you don't like it get a wage or salary job like the rest of us.
"For me, "hobbyist" refers not esthetics so much as *origin*. That is, whence did game X or module Y come? Was it created to fill a slot in a production schedule or did it arise out of play? That's the big difference between, say, Gygax's Giants-Drow series and the Dragonlance modules. The former were professional write-ups of adventures based in actual play, whereas Dragonlance was conceived from start to finish as an effort to sell modules. Certainly Dragonlance borrowed elements from adventures and campaigns that were actually played (like Jeff Grubb's deities), but there was no such thing as a Dragonlance campaign prior to its being written up for sale, unlike nearly adventure Gary Gygax wrote during his time at TSR."
I would just like to say that is one of the most remarkably racist posts I've ever seen on Slashdot. You'd think in the wake of Micheal Brown, people would be more sensitive. But no.
"It's too bad the Soviet Union didn't survive" is an odd phrase indeed. Is this the first time it has ever been used?
The Soviet Union couldn't have gotten on the internet, there would have been too much free information floating around. To heck with the internet - the Soviets couldn't even sell Xerox machines to the general public, they would have been used by the people for anti-Communist activities. But don't trust me, listen to one of the Soviet leaders (and, by extension, one of the smartest people in their entire empire).
In a remarkable tete-a-tete with a US journalist and former arms control official, Marshal Nikolai Ogarkov, First Deputy Defense Minister and Chief of the General Staff, interpreted the real meaning of SDI:
"We cannot equal the quality of U.S. arms for a generation or two. Modern military power is based on technology, and technology is based on computers. In the US, small children play with computers... Here, we don't even have computers in every office of the Defense Ministry. And for reasons you know well, we cannot make computers widely available in our society. We will never be able to catch up with you in modern arms until we have an economic revolution. And the question is whether we can have an economic revolution without a political revolution."
What were those reasons that everyone knew well? Ever heard of samizdat? No, eh?
Q: Why is starting a comment in the Subject: line incredibly irritating?

Would it tempt you if I told you someone has gone into the .exe of Master of Orion with an assembler and fixed a ton of bugs, making the game more challenging and closer to the designers' original intent? The computer opponents in particular work according to intent now. Dare ye click and play MoO again, but an improved experience this time?

The Tea Party are whites. The President is a black man. He represents his own people and no other. He has openly stated this and is proud of the fact.
