No I have not RTFA, but if the flash ram retains it's data when the PC is off, couldnt we use it as a hard drive substitute rather than a RAM substitute?
well, this is mostly because flash drives have a limited amount of write cycles, making it useless after x writes. Perhaps there will be flash that doesn't wear out some day, but not yet.

omg, someone`s moving to a low cost rental trailer one of these days..:) seriously, i kinda feel sorry for the guy, it`s actually a pretty nasty thing to do, post this site on the/. frontpage, I would be pretty pissed of if I were him...
Run for it, gotta get the trippelclick patent before microsoft gets it!
seriously, this is really ridicilous, the patent system as it is is really just a giant joke. The system desperatly needs a remake or makeover, making the important patents pass, and the ridicilous ones take a loong vacation in.. the trash bin.
Imagine flashing some nice ASCII p0rn in public, would make some really nice fun:) Old Lady: Henry *roll with eyes* what *is* that thing hanging in the air by that kid, yeah, the one shaking his hand all around his head with one of these teechno things? Henry: Ehrm, it seems to be a womans..erhm.. privates, Edna.

um, I know this is kinda blasphemy here on slashdot, but my tip is actually to reduce your dose of caffeine. I used to drink *lots* of coffee and other caffeinated beverages earlier, but decided to try a little break and watch the difference. My conclusion is as follows (beware: these are my personal experiences, your might be completely different)
1. If you are going to be doing a lot of intensive work, in need of intense concentration (such as coding), you shouldn`t pour down coffee like you never saw it before. The coffee dehydrates your body, leading to less-than-optimal body functionality and can actually make you less suited to do the job intented. 2. If you, as we all do once in a while, drink buckets of coffee - remember to drink lots of water or other beverage to compensate for the water loss brought on by the caffeine. It`s important to have enough water in your body, we're water creatures after all ^^.
the question is, does it have an option to specify coding into the late night, drinking lots of coffee and not falling asleep before the next day at school ? (I could not test this since their server seems to be taking a nap right now.)

This has been avaiable here in Norway for several years now.. allthough I do imagine there is a certain difference in volume between Norway and the US. Had a funny experience with this btw, one day when I was bored, I looked up my number in one of the online catalogs - and behold, they had gotten hold of even more information about me than I ever gave my cell provider, it was kinda scary I can tell you:)
my point beeing that all of us does not have some sort of DSL or likes, and doesn`t want do to "this update thingy that has been bugging me" if it is a 50-100 mb download with a 56K modem. THESE where the ones I were refering to, dummy:P and btw - my idea was for a iso image to be burnt IN THE SHOP.
Hm, just a little idea: what if M$ just made some sort of "quickstart" cd which they shipped out to retailers, with current patches and service packs. this could be done with a simple.iso file for download or something, and either the pc producers or retailers could ship this in a HUGE RED (to catch attention:)) envelope. Then perhaps the internet could at least be spared some of these traffic generated by worms and the likes.
okay, this is just my humnle opinion on this matter, and may or may not be taken seriously:)
function build array(){ print "include at least 2 nics."; } function rip_dvd_as_iso(){ while ($x1000){ rip_2_iso;/*This includes all the stuff such as subtitles and so on (in case you perhaps are going to have an exchange student living with you, who knows ?)*/ $x++; } }
function build_web_interface(){ print "Make some sort of database over all the recorded dvds, categories, actors and so on and son on, then make a web interface offering links to the isos (with a nice info page with each iso)"; } function make_client(){ print "This may be some kind of mini-ITX box, a barebone system or something similar, make a nice UI (a full screen browser such as mozilla perhaps, scripted in such a way that when you click the specialy crafted urls of the server, it downloads the iso file to a temp drive on the client, mounts the iso and fires up mplayer - woila, menues, subtitles and all the extras on the dvds right under your fingertips:)"; }//when that`s done, let`s do some 'magic' build_array(); rip_dvd_as_iso(); build_ web_interface(); make_client();//voila!;P
seriously, it`s my opinion that it`s smart to temporarily download the isos to the client, and then play it, or perhaps make a samba network between the clients and mount it so, but some sort of indexing, such as a web interface are a great help if you are dealing with such numbers of dvds. You may make it as simple as copying and pasting movie info from imdb.com.
but hey, a movie is still just a serie of still images, and can easily be be stripped into single frames wich then can be used with excisting software that does the excact same thing as this "new and flashy technology".
Photoshop actually has a built-in tool to make these kind of photos, so actually this is rather old news (allthough it deals with still frames, but I can`t see a very big problem converting a movie clip into single frame pictures and then running it through photoshops "panorama maker"). So, it`s sort of been done.

Arthur C. Clarke actually wrote a nice story about this: "the fires within" I just reread it now, and it has several things in common with TFA, except that the scientis in his story used sonar to map the inner working of mother tellus. In that story, earth had an inner civilization. You can find it in "The collected Stories of Arthur C. Clarke", or "Reach for tomorrow" To all those of you bashin Clarkes writing in the article posted earlier this week - read his short stories, they surely is a tasty mouthfull:)
"If you see a piercing green light shooting into the sky Sunday night, it's not aliens, it's the work of scientists at Ball Aerospace.".. That`s what they want us to believe! Do not go with strange green men into theyr flying saucers on sunday - they are NOT going to give you candy as they surely will tell you .

one link would have done it, the same link twice is kinda... cool for the people running the site, getting ad revenue.

Holy smoke, have you forgotten the LOTR trilogy already ?
(Yes, there where some letdowns, but generally PJ did a fantastic job!)

that must be nice, being known as the inventors of a bodily gesture probably known to man as long as man has existed...
