Since this is already looking to be a rather inflamatory discussion, I thougt I might add my opinion into this mess:)
These inventions are all great, and have meant a lot to human development, BUT IMHO it is wrong to couple it to a spesific religion/country/race. These are human inventions. As I always think to myself: The human race are going to be far better off when we get past religion. Methinks we are past the stage where we need fictious characters to explain the unknown in our lives.
As Arthur C. Clarke put it: "Religion is the most malevolent of all mind viruses."
argh,, fixed link to Pluto: plutohome.com. I really like this project. It's a opensource home automation system with loads of features. Based on Debian I believe.
some of the things I would like to have in my techno-house:
Dimmable windows (LCD panels with varying opacity). This would be king in the summer, if you could regulate the amount of sunshine entering the room, thus cutting solar heating in summer.
E-ink wallpaper. This is something I don't think will be aviable for a while, but this is an idea I really like. This need not be high-res picture wallpaper, simply blocks of "screens" that can change color depending on mood/lighting/etc.
Media that follow me around the house. This is already implemented in some smart-home solutions (Pluto, Where you can use your bluetooth enabled pda/cell as a "locator" that tracks you through the house, making your light/climate/media follow you around the house.)
"smart" sharing between computers. This is probably where upnp-av is supposed to be, but it's not there yet. I would like to have all media (movies/pictures/music etc) on all the trusted computers on my lan aviable throug one single interface, not having to mess with interoperability between oses and so on. Just push a "Show all movies on network" should show all the movies on the network. You could make some kind of tagging system to mark movies private/public and the like (smart move for pr0n collection:)
The one and most important thing - compatibility. I love it when things simply works. Some times it great to tinker, some times it's great for things just to work as they are intended.
... So the documentary-makers stick with sharks. Generally, their procedure is to scatter bleeding fish pieces around their boat, so as to infest the waters. I would estimate that the primary food source of sharks today is bleeding fish pieces scattered by people making documentaries. Once the sharks arrive, they are generally fairly listless. The general shark attitude seems to be: "Oh God, another documentary." So the divers have to somehow goad them into attacking, under the guise of Scientific Research. "We know very little about the effect of electricity on sharks," the narrator will say, in a deeply scientific voice. "That is why Todd is going to jab this Great White in the testicles with a cattle prod." The divers keep this kind of thing up until the shark finally gets irritated and snaps at them, and then they act as though this was a totally unexpected and very dangerous development, although clearly it is what they wanted all along.

Seems like the documentary people has stopped feeding the sharks
I have been wondering about a way to do synchronized bookmarks between my stationary and my laptop. Is there any such tool for firefox wich doesn't involve storing my bookmarks with google (or any other provider), but rather host it on a protected area of my own website ?
it's drawing power to recharge its battery from the pci bus, nothing more. The real transfer is done over the sata bus, thus making it more or less driver free. A great advantage if you are running an OS that would most likely not be supported by the developer...
"Companies should give passengers safety advice including the number of flights the spacecraft has been on and any problems they have experienced with the craft, according to further recommendations in the report."
This could actually be more handy in a regular aviation situation. Being a tad scared of flying, I would love to know how big my chances are:)
Stewardess: You have a 95% chance of surviving this flight with our current maintenance record, please take your seat and have a nice flight, sir.
I would believe this also made it a bit more difficult/confusing to the people having to discuss these viruses among themselves, ie. the AV companies. It's just like windows patches, It's a bit hard remembering the characteristics of a string of "random" digits.
this is really a nontopic. If you can't trust the people that handles the information, you will never be 100% (or sure enough) that no data is stolen. When I worked at a place with graded material I had to be checked by the police, and then I had to go through with an extended interview with the superior. As said so many times that no one should ever have to be reminded: If the people with access to classified information is not "secure", there is no point in having a super secure computer network. Security is as strong as the weakest link, and in most cases that is the user/operator.
haha, it actually was a large "W00t" being finished just when I joined, and at once when it whas finished it disappeared into all the usual "f*ck", "a**" etc. It's kinda typical hive behaviour, to be inmature that is.
man, this story is straining my budget. I'm just filling up my amazon shopping cart with all the great books that have been mentioned in this thread. This is why I love slashdot, you always find so much interesting in the comments (sometimes, that is).
If they say they will keep it anonymous, there is still the fact that they got the data, and then there is not a long way to imagine them using it for some sort of "anti-terrorist" action or something of the sort. IMHO this is a very scary thing if it get implemented, since the gov. gets access to data they can use with less than a good reason in their "fight against terror".
ok, you are in a factory with 14 machines, producing coins. All the machines are supposed to produce exactly the same coin. But by weighing some random coins, you find out that there is one machine that produces a coin that is exactly one gram heavier than the others. Find the correct machine by doing ONE measurement.
It's not that difficult, but it took me a few minutes to figure it out the first time:)
Reading in the article, it states that it will be delivered in LQFP packages, which means that it will be a pain in the a.. to solder it yourself. offcourse it's possible, but i believe many DIY projects don't include either the equipment, or skill to manage to solder this thing. For the more advanced it's offcourse pretty cool, but I guess i'll still stick with the PIC - there's currently no need to use this chip for 99% (yes, I picked this number randomly, and it is therefore not valid but..) of all the DIY projects out there. ..as I strike down upon thee..

Hey Taco, your lameness filter is broken,
if THAT is not ironic in a slashdot post, i don't know what is.. this is like double double irony
ah, where is the "mod paranoid" option when one needs it.. :)

duh,, I wonder why there is such a term as RTFA.. :)
Nice point. As it said in the article, virgin is planning launches from mexico, which would render these guidelines pretty much useless.

RTFA, this stuff is already in the store.
Doolittle : ...What is your one purpose in life?
:)
Bomb no.20 : To explode of course.
The whole conversation with a self aware bomb, extremly interesting

This was being planned for a norwegain "town" Rjukan in 2003, but the plan never saw the light of day.. hah :)
