Move Over Helms-Burton, look out for the Loyalists Edmonton Journal, July 25, 1996
It looks like a case of tit-for-tat. Or perhaps what's good for the eagle is good for the beaver. Two Liberal MPs plan to mirror te American Helms-Burton law that allows U.S. firms to sue foreign companies using property in Cuba confiscated from Americans.
The so-called Godfrey-Milliken law in Canada would permit descendants of United Empire Loyalists, who fled the United States following the 1776 American Revolution to reclaim land that was "confiscated unjustly and illegally by the American government and its citizens.
John Godfrey (Don Valley East) and Peter Milliken (Kingston and the Islands) said Wednesday they plan to introduce their law as a private members bill in September. Private member's bills seldom pass.
"If the Americans are serious about Helms-Burton, I think we can be serious about this," said Milliken who added the bill is partly tongue-in-cheek."
[I did not make this up. Both Godfrey and Milliken are Liberal MPs and both plan to introduce this bill to Parliament in protest of the Helms-Burton law in the U.S. allowing Americans to sue foreigners in American courts for trading with Cuba.]
I read on fox news the other day FOX isn't allowed in Canada.
Hmm, on my satellite receiver, I get Fox TV from Seattle and Boston. I think if I plug the cable in to the TV, we may get Fox from Buffalo or Detroit. It's been so song since I watched cable. I think we also have the Fox Sportschannel. Also, I think a lot of Fox programming oozes acorss the border in the form of rebroadcasted programming, like the Simpsons, malcolm in the middle, etc. How much access does Fox need?
I don't think too many people are terribly concerned about losing their job to you. My advice to you if you do want to steal someone's job would be to get someone to proofread your cover letter.
Convergys bought out the small local company Taima. I met one of the brothers who owned the company at a New Year's party on e year. he thought he was foing people a favour by paying them starvation wages. When I worked for them, they had this six month contract where if you did not complete six months of employment, you were billed $1000 for training. I never completed my six months and was never billed, but during that time, I had surgery and a bout of depression. How good a job is that? I am lucky that I have a job now where I pay more taxes than I earned when I worked for them.
Good riddance to Taima, though I can't imagine things got better after a multinational bought them out.
Wow, I have found Best Buy to not be so bad in Canada. I will, however, keep these stories in mind, because ya know leopards don't change their stripes....or is that tigers don't change their stripes...that seems illogical....oh well
At Future Shop, the company they bought out recently, I used to hate shopping there. I bought a cheap printer and the sales clerk insisted I get a USB cable. I told him I have a few of them at home. He told me I needed a special printer USB cable. What part of Universal means needing a special printer cable? I wish I wasn't in shock that this asshole would lie to me so much that I would have had a good comeback.
I'm glad I am not the only one who has done something like that. I was on my laptop and was testing out a new program I installed. I think it was a command line instant messaging program. Of course, MSN changed its protocol so I could not use MSN. I telnetted (is that a verb?) into my server to check my email. The phone rang so I chatted for a bit, then came back to what I was doing and did th e "rm -rf" command. Oops, wrong box!
After finishing university in Windsor, Ontario, I took a job in Detroit, Michigan. AT&T called me at home in Canada telemarketing asking me to switch. I think they got my number when I used them to make a calling-card call from the office to home. I couldn't believe it. I asked her if she know who was calling and if AT&T provides service in the 519 area code. Ich denke dass, in einer Fremdsprache antworten, ist eine gute Idee. (oi vey, my German is getting bad)
You left out the North West Territories. When Nunavut (not Nunavat) was created in 1999, the eastern half made up the new territory and the western half remained w the NWT. Both terrritories got to keep that cool polar bear licence plate, but considering that Nunavut has less than 50km of road, I wonder how many cars are up there......
I think we were prparing to taken over the US when Nunavut was created because the mail abbreviation for the territory was going to be NV, but that was taken by some place in the US.
There's the anti-war people, pro-women's rights, pro-civil-liberties. Is there anyone left voting for him besides lunitics? That can't be more than 20% of the population.
I hope your right. Unfortunately, the lunatics vote. The others are either too bus trying to change the world or are too cynical to vote. It's sad really.
Or pay $12 a year for pobox.com redirection and spam filtering.
Yes pobox.com is a great service which I used for about five years and still recommend to friends but at the end of the day you're still dependent on them staying in business and not unreasonably raising prices etc
A.com domain registration including free email forwarding is only $7.95 per year now at GoDaddy. That's probably a better deal if you're about to go through the pain of changing addresses and you really want the confidence of being able to keep the address forever. If GoDaddy became a problem then you can always move the domain elsewhere.
I use zoneedit for my domain name. You can set up DNS, dynamic DNS on it or if you don't have the skill or the need, it also provides web and mail forwards. The best part is that unless you use some insane amount of their bandwidth, it's free.
Even better, if someone were to somehow upload it to a database-website, people could key in their addresses and if they match, add themselves to a class-action suit. Even if we don't get anything back from him, bankruptcy & destituion would be a nice punishment for him and his family.
jsd@server:~$ uptime
12:19:15 up 94 days, 20:32, 2 users, load average: 1.12, 1.21, 1.00
jsd@server:~$
Why go that elabotate? Uptime alone is enough reason, well maybe not, Linux does all it needs too.
Then again, you could move to Saskatchewan and get a house for $35,000CDN (about $25,000US).
But that would mean having to LIVE in Sassykatchewan which would be terribly fun if you don't like long winters and being seperated from friends and ummm can you earn as much money out there as you would in Ontario?
Someone has already tried to do that

hmm, I think you mentioned the name of both our large cities.

Our alphabet is not nearly as funny as Gene Simmons doing a New York alphabet, "F***ing A, F***ing B, F***ing C ...".
Try IKEA if there is one in your area. They have battery and lightbulb recycling.
Oh no, not Meijer too! So much for my cross-border shopping trips if I ever move back to Windsor.
For some of us, it's 37.500000, or even 35.000000.

Take that back. Tim Horton's not tasteless sludge! It's sludge that tastes awful and wreaks havoc on your body.
Well, although unlikely, with a laptop and a hijacked wireless connection, they could STILL spam or is it SPAM living underneath a bridge in a box.

I remember a place in Detroit on Michigan Avenue called Bill's (I think) Firearms and Auto Parts.

I think that what you stated is the accepted rule in the US and Canada, but in the UK, an organisation is referred to as a plural noun.

No, you call it pap. I think whoever brought English to the US midwest forgot the letter 'O'.

That's only if you add the tax.
I think you missed Japan & Israel.
