  1. RAID is really here on Basics of RAID · · Score: 2, Informative

It's amazing how common RAID is now, especially (S)ATA RAID.

In video editing, RAID is everything. External SATA RAID is the big thing now, and it works pretty well, even when it's OS based. What I haven't seen yet are (relatively) cheap SATA RAID 5 enclosures. That would be the Holy Grail of fast media storage.

  2. Motion 2, Apple X850 on ATI Announces 512MB Graphics Card · · Score: 1

I just bought a dual 2.3 G5. The manual makes mention of an ATi X850, which would likely be Apple's moniker for an X800 with twice the RAM.

As mentioned above, Tiger is the place where huge amounts of video RAM can really be used. A fast VPU with 512 RAM would be especially helpful for Motion users with dual displays.

So no this might not be the thing for gaming, but I'd love to get an X850 for Motion, assuming it's still going to be released (maybe in June?)

    What I hear:
Apparently, Apple has just announced new pro software today. First off is the new app Motion, which is blah blah blah blah blah. Second, is Final Cut Pro HD, boasting blah blah blah. Capture blah blah over FireWire, edit blah blah blah. Blah blah, now for blah, can deliver blah blah blah to an attached Apple Cinema Display. Last, but most important to me, is DVD Studio Pro 3, which has slick new transitions, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, and integration with Final Cut Pro HD and Motion. Motion will be available this summer for $299. The Final Cut Pro HD update is available now for FCP 4 users. DVD Studio Pro 3 is expected to ship in mid-May.

Apple today introduced Xsan, a blah blah for Mac OS X systems."

See, I can understand that. Most on /. are more CPU literate than me, so I greet many headlines with, "WTF?" But I'm always glad to hear when somebody is underwhelmed with Apple's creative offerings. I don't need any more competition. I'm sure you guys don't get all that happy when people realize the career potential in proper coding. Too many people are too good these days.

Keep your eyes up by controlling Motion using gestures, instead of the keyboard and mouse. Using a pen and tablet, you can control Motion with one hand tied behind your back. After taking in the comments from fellow /. readers, I am now convinced that Apple has conspired with the NASA Langley Research Center to make the G5 CPU look fast. They have my crappy ass Wintel box when they pry it from my numb, pale fingers.
