  1. Re:What?! on Netcraft Says IIS Gaining on Apache · · Score: 2, Insightful

You are right. I think it's a little easier for someone with no web server admin experience to setup IIS than Apache. However, Apache admins, on the whole, tend to be more knowledgeable of how things work than their IIS counterparts. This tends to be true all around whether it's a *nix operating system, shell scripting, databases, etc. I had one IT manager, when run into Oracle problems, get frustrated and suggest converting the whole database to one single flat file and having the application use that (The reason here is that this database was outside the world of MS. And to MS people, if something is outside that world, it's hopeless). And he was a Microsoft guy.
I love that little barrier to entry found outside of Microsoft. It ensure some minimum level of knowledge. That way I don't have to listen to some ASP programmer tell me how he likes the "IIS operating system" over the "Apache operating system". Let's just hope it stays that way.

Perhaps there should be some kind of body that can put together initiatives consisting of a stacks of projects from drivers up to the GUI. I think that would be pretty sweet. And maybe the coding is even being done already, the packages could at least be strung together or grouped somehow.

  5. Re:Will anyone gain anything from this? Not Linux on The End is Nigh for XP · · Score: 1

If you are getting close to changing, then I highly advise you to run a dual boot system. You can try Linux without giving up the safety of your XP. I'm a programmer working for many clients and I've found that virtual desktops have vastly improved my productivity and here is why. For one client, I sit at a desk and work on various projects. I open up a browser, terminal windows, mySQL Query Browser, etc. I start working on a problem. Then my client comes over and says, "Hey, I really need you to work on this other problem.". So, I have to go somewhere else on my browser, connect to a different database, log out of the remote servers I was in and log into the new ones. This really sucks...especially on days where I find I'm doing this 3, 4 or 5 times and jumping back and forth. It really takes me a few minutes for my brain to change gears. When I'm booted into Linux (Fedora on this particular laptop), I open up my applicaitons for problem #1 on desktop #1. When I need to change gears, I flip to the next desktop and open up the applications I need for problem #2. Now when I need to jump back and forth everything is there waiting for me. It's excellent.

Dual booting is a great thing when you are wondering about another OS. I say give it a shot. I've found the software updating process a little bit smoother on Ubuntu than on Fedora Core.

    Good luck.

I'm optimistic about the environment. I think humans will drive it to a point of mass devastation that will take out a huge portion of life on Earth. I think it's kind of one of those things that keeps things in balance. If something is damaging the environment too much, it will take drastic actions as a self-defence mechanism. Almost like a fever. Once that happens, I think some life will persevere and it wont be humans (or most mammels and fish). I'm guessing some bacteria will make it. And then the stage will be set for future evolution. Aren't we almost at 26 Million years?

...one of the principals of evolution is overpopulation. Having more animals than the environment can support will result in survival of the fittest. There is no way around that. However, we have yet to reach that point. We still have room to grow as a species. What will the human landscape look like when we have reached the point of overpopulation? What other species will we have displaced and brought to the point of extinction when we get to that point? At that point in time, will the only animals existing be some marine animals, humans, rats, cockroaches and pigeons?
We are smart enough to invent atomic bombs, factories, automobiles, styrofoam Big-Mac containers, but will we be smart enough to compensate for our overpopulation? Will we be able to do so before mass disease runs rampant and elimates a huge percentage of our population?
In the end, the ultimate question is, are we too smart? Will evolution and the rules of life take its course and remove us becuase we have passed that threshold of intellegence and are on the wrong side?
Our options are A) Learn to live with the planet to ensure resources are abundant enough to support our species (this can include 300 story apartment buildings in Kansas and eating some kind of man-made protien) B) Increase the size of our environment (Moon, Mars) C) Suffer massive losses.

NF loses money because of this. NF doesn't do anything, then all of a sudden the MPAA gets involved.
