is this a ditch effort by sun to stay alive? it seems as though they've just been slipping away in recent years; they had the "One" platform of ubiquotous distributed computing and then that sort of disappeared, are we going to see the end of solaris soon?
you tactfully fail to mention that all the core number-crunching code is in C++, and they are currently porting the entire app to C++ to make it cross-platform and command-line based.
However, Mark McWilliams, a software engineer and Office 2003 beta tester, said he has seen nothing to indicate that Office 2003 removes formatting information from files saved in.xml. He noted that he opened a heavily formatted.doc Microsoft Word file, saved the file as XML, and later opened the file in Word 2003.
"The opened XML document looks exactly like the original.doc file," he said. "And if I open up the XML file in a text editor, I can see that all of the formatting is properly maintained in the XML file."
He also noted that when saving a file, a user has the option of saving in a "data only" XML format which does remove formatting.
so does formatting the harddrive not eliminate all past date? because i've read stories of how the fbi recovered sensitive material even on formatted drives
Aural Cascading Style Sheets (ACSS), part of the new CSS 2 working draft, promises incredibly simple integration of speech output in web pages. Web developers will easily be able to have their web pages speak to the visually impaired in multiple voices, volumes, and even position the voice! Why then, are there no implementations of this for any commercial browser, and why aren't developers embracing this powerful technology? The ONLY implementation of any sort is Emacspeak!
MS can win...if they were under the previous scheme then indeed they should only release major new versions. However, now that they are under the subscription pay model, the "right" thing to do would be to release more upgrades.
I'm working on a project to implement the Aural CSS (from the css2 specs) standards as an activex control for IE...its sad that neither mozilla or IE or even opera support ACSS
with the ruling essentially removing requirement for sites to comply, it seems that all of CSS2's recommendations regarding Aural CSS are moot if sites don't implemenet it.
One hope, however, is the eventual coming of many non-visual browsers (i.e., car browsers, pocket radio browsers, or whatever people dream up), which will make Aural CSS incredibly important for us to have a richer experience of non-visual webpages!
it seems a shade under 10%
close...actually more like 9% of his shares (he sold $1bill and still has $10bill left)
also, it's interesting to note ballmer still owns 4% of the company.
It's good to know that our tax dollars are going to something useful and scientifically worthwhile!!

pleeez....they're business majors. the presentation is just screaming the obviousities
I checked the site out and it seems nothing more than a glorified message board.
Someone, please enlighten my ignorant soul and tell me what makes this software so special?
Correction sir,
the output of the morse is a series of "dit"s and "daw"s, so a bit more work would be needed to make it truly work
wtf?

in the next few minutes now, Digital Impact should be feeling the sweet wrath that is the "slashdot effect".
myself, I will sit back and pop open a nice beer and imagine the glorious sound of their servers grinding to a halt.
the linked article also mentions lisp/scheme - why haven't us schemers gotten together yet to celebrate its sweetness???
...National ISP pays YOU!
does this mean SOMEONE will now figure out that we hate Jar Jar??
IN SOVIET RUSSIA...
microsoft's code owns you!
this reminds me of an equally applicable hip-hop rap from back in dem old school days:
2 legit, 2 l3g1t 2 quit!
so does formatting the harddrive not eliminate all past date? because i've read stories of how the fbi recovered sensitive material even on formatted drives
duh, so we can all make witty comments about how we slashdotted the poor soul's server!
>My body seems to take longer to digest the real >food. OTOH junk food seems to be converted to energy in only a few minutes
indeed, your perceptions are not unique to you.
for most everyone, the heavy carbs in pasta indeed are digested slower than the simple sugars in the junk food we eat!

i, for one, am a proponent of Open Source rain.

did anyone see the headline as
"Computerized Beating System Proves Vulnerable"??
that would indeed be one crappy beating system..
