Philips Electronics, the licensor of the CD logo, has refused to allow the hybrid discs to be sold with the CD logo unless the labels guarantee to assume responsibility for "read errors" on the CD side, a spokeswoman for Philips said.

My personal RIAA boycott has been ongoing for some time now, but the last few CDs that I did buy did not have the CD logo on them, nor do the discs in my wife's (who has not yet seen fit to join the boycott) collection. It seems to me that the big labels have been eschewing the official CD logo for some time now--so the lack of 'official licensing' for DualDisc shouldn't actually be a factor for its acceptance, at least from the CD side.

It makes sense to use a PDA with a full-size keyboard, in my opinion (you get maximum portability plus word processor compatability), and with the same purchase you'll have an MP3 player and organiser (and portable web browser and e-mail client, if you get a decent one). Something to consider.

  7. DVD-A is dead for more than just that on AAC Chosen For DVD-ROM Section Of DVD Audio Discs · · Score: 5, Insightful

The whole format (along with SACD) offers consumers nothing except a more expensive alternative with "stronger" DRM. As people realise this, there's no chance of it catching on.

DVD-Audio players are required to have analog outputs only, which for multi channel music means you have to run 6 RCA cables (!) from your DVD-A player to your receiver (plus the digital audio and video cables you need for playing DVD videos). And the "superior sound quality" of both DVD-A and SACD is well outside the range of human hearing. At least AAC, DTS, and CD's can be sent to your receiver digitally. (A few companies offer player-receiver pairs that use a proprietary firewire type link to cut down on the cables, but all of a sudden you're in the $5,000+ range and you suddenly become locked out of switching players or receivers to a different brand.)

Whereas if you by a DTS audio disc, for example, you don't need any new equipment, the signals are sent to the receiver in digital form, and you have full multichannel audio. But those don't seem to be getting much support from the publishers. Meanwhile most people (myself included) are likely to be content with DPLII and its cousins like CS2, Logic 7 and the like that do quite a good job rendering stereo sources into multichannel.

The system works well, because the GG can oust the PM, but only if it's really necessary. You can never have an impeachment for political gain, as may or may not have happened south of the border not too long ago...

I know this is the more common classification, but as you've picked up, I don't agree with it. They do cross some right-left lines, for sure, which makes them hard to classify. It depends on what you see as most important. But I think the key question is, what party have they replaced in Quebec? (Answer: Progressive-Conservative). Which was my main point, that the regionalism-versus-federalism in Canadian politics has guaranteed the more federal party a win in the last few elections, since obviously the regions divided against each other are smaller than the whole.

Specifically though, as far as increased provincial autonomy/decreased federal government, restrictions on immigration, and their use of the colour blue ;) they are more like Tories than Liberals. Also I would consider nationalism to be a right-wing position regardless of the economic theory that accompanies it.

  10. Re:An interesting difference on Did HP Defraud the Canadian Government? · · Score: 1

...And the Governor General and the Queen are even further removed from party politics than those you mentioned. (No Canadian has the $$ to bribe the latter!)

What we have had, however, is a five-party situation in which the right-wing vote is regionally split into three (a Western party, an Eastern English party, and an Eastern French party), which means the Liberals have known for a few elections in a row now that they're the only game in town. (The fifth party, the socialist NDP, is still deemed too left-wing to have a shot at winning a majority.)

Small wonder then, that the Liberal party stops caring about their public image, opening the door both to sloppy management of policies and outright corruption (which is all coming to light now). They don't even care how bad they look because they're the only party who can win.

We'll see if in the next election the new super-Tories (the two English right-wing parties have merged) will change this situation. Personally I think they'll still have trouble getting votes in Eastern Canada, but I hope they can get enough to bring about a minority government (Liberal+NDP).

Even that is rare enough that I have no problem listening to headphones to break up the monotony and don't feel it's being "anti-social". Blue ray disks come in a built in protective plastic case, like 3 1/2 inch floppies. This is because the very small track widths make error correction so much more difficult. Even with DVDs there have been a lot of consumer complaints over how easily they scratch, and hi-def disks (in any format, unless someone comes out with one on a laser-disc size platter) are going to be that much more fragile, so this change is not as boneheaded as it sounds.
