    Airgo is obviously trying to gain leverage with their technology by getting it out on the market early.

    If so, they are late already. Belkin had their "pre-N" quite some time ago, as did some other big brand names. Don't quote me on this but I think its been almost a year now. I don't know how valuable this press release is at all.

    There IS a very important exception that is pissing me off. I was basically telemarketer-free in the months following the DNC list. Very nice and quiet at home. Then my wife put our home phone number on her newly submitted business license, as we only have the one line.

    Guess what? Businesses are not protected! We get several calls a day now. So word of warning, never put your home phone# as the official number of record on a home-based business.

    So perhaps it would wake up the eyes of your employer and their draconian policies? Just a thought. I know this won't work for every company (like banks), but if I were the CIO of a company, I'd just make HR policies with strict punishments and train the employees on those policies. Then you can treat your employees like adults instead of children.

    Well the main one that it's not SIP, so you can't take advantage of all of the SIP software and hardware. So I want it to ring an actual telephone.

    Has anyone seen a good rundown on the pros and cons of a lot of VOIP services? I'm looking to get a second line at the house for work, but don't want to pay for it. I don't mind paying $5-7 for an incoming virtual phone#, I just don't want to pay $35-45 for a regulated line.

    Skype is cool but not sure if it has the features I would need. I like Voicepulse's features but they are still in the $20+ range. I'm gonna be low usage on the call-out (to PSTN), so I want to stick with something where I pay as I go for minutes.

    Right now I'm looking at SIPphone and Gizmo.

    I did about 30 min of testing, going around all the quirks and compliance sites. The rendering engine has either not been worked on yet or maybe they are pushing that "feature" out to IE8.

    Seriously, Konfabulator or DesktopX or Kapsules or Active Desktop or let's see if I can think of any more... Anyway, all of these I am certain have an audience. You have the skinning scene, the graphic artists, and basically Joe and Jane User who just like a "pretty" computer.

    Good point, but I think I'm going to go out of my way to help any STANDARDS COMPLIANT browser win the day. So, I'll wait and see when IE7 comes out how it scores on the compliance tests. Then what I'll do is put one of those really annoying hovering layers on all of my websites if the browser != Firefox or a small handful of others like Opera. Will IE7 be on this list? I would let it in if they do their job. I really seriously doubt it'll be more compliant to web standards than Firefox is today.

    Just because a project isn't hosted on sourceforge doesn't mean its not relevant.

    As an aside I want to say that to combat this common perception that people have, I simply create a sf.net project and redirect everything back to my "standalone" resources on my project website. I recommend that all project managers do this or something similar. I have a listing at Freshmeat and several other sites as well.

    I happen to host my downloads on SF, but even if I did not, I'd want the SF listing because it can help increase traffic, and it provides a consistent interface to those interested in other SF-hosted projects.

    I'll go ahead and admit it. I did not RTFA. But I'm not really commenting on it. I am commenting in general to the free software, pro-commune, anti-capitalists out there.

    Hey I love FOSS. I *also* love "freeware", "public domain", "cc" and the other concepts and licenses that frankly just say, "here you go, enjoy, and give me credit, thanks".

    But free doesn't pay the bills, people. Here's a thought, work with me on this:

    1) Company A produces software. They are a growing business based in...anywhere with some form of patents on software, doesn't matter where.

    2) Company A wants to go global and start exporting to diversee economies around the world.

    3) Company A has patents on their creations, and enjoys making money on them. Agree or disagree, right or wrong, this is how they have chosen to do business.

    4) Company A decides its best not to do business in the EU because they won't have the same protection from competitors as they do at home.

    Have I missed something? Patents are not my strong suit, so feel free to shoot holes in my scenario.

    Here's the comment I left on their website:

    Instead of dropping the podbuddy, why not just drop the FM transmitter function? It seems that the whole point of the patent is an "integrated fm transmitter and mp3 player dock". Take out the FM, provide a line-out which you can access from the ipod dock controller. If you want to market a convenient FM transmitter--do that too. I honestly don't see why you would NOT build your product this way. I'd buy it, if I didn't already have a solution for my ipod.

    If I spend 1 hour and $10 to make a widget, and my break-even point with other expenses is $15 so I charge $20 each.

    The current economic conditions of the purchaser have no bearing on my finances.

    On second thought, you know what, you are right! We should just toss out the free market and have the government issue copies of Microsoft's software to each citizen!

    Security is a compromise man. Bug the hell out of the user so that they are trained. Bug the user when they change security levels. What else do you want it to do? Block everything silently and then you have increased tech support costs.

    In that case it might do wonders for their hardware sales. Someone who wants to run both Mac and Windows might buy a Mini if they want to get in cheap, then dual-boot. I can see doing that myself.
