And you know that LCDs have only one native resolution. Anything other than that and you are scaling, which looks fuzzy. So even if I go down to a 19" LCD where you can get 1024 or 1280 native, that's going to be pushing it for me. 21"'s don't go lower than 1280 (I think?).

No, that's silly. I was making a reference to the parent's comment that wifi was like toll roads and streetlights, and furthermore that they are "free".

Oh, wait, actually, there IS a choice -- between two monopolies

I'm not sure which way you swing on this...I'll assume you are anti-monopoly--however that doesn't relate to the point you are trying to make. If you say "choice between to monopolies" and neither is good, then all you have proven is that monopolies can (and often are) bad. Especially the government regulated ones. So we are in agreement there. I am not calling for a monopoly, so I'm not sure why you even brought that up.

  7. We don't need wifi welfare on Texas Wireless Ban Has Failed · · Score: 1
Public wireless is like roads and street lights

I disagree with this on the basis that:

    • The stuff ain't free.
    • The Bill of Rights does not include a Right to Wireless Networking.
And actually, while I would agree that most roads are not toll roads, street lights certainly DO have a fee. I'm sure that the method by which you pay it varies by locality. Here in my county my water utility (why water? who knows) levies a fee of $3.50 a month. Some of you may not get this broken down like I do on my bill, but trust me, you pay for it, whether it's exposed in a fee or hidden in property taxes.

I guess what I am saying is that your wish to socialize wireless networking doesn't square with my wish to not pay for you to have it. A sister comment mentioned that private comapnies can be just as inefficient as government, and that's true. However, if the sector is not regulated, and the government is not monopolizing the service of wifi in an area, the market will give the business to the best supplier, and the worst ones will go out of business. If the government does it, dissatisfied customers have nowhere to turn but their gov't representatives. If it's private sector, and some idiot's not doing their job, at least it's not (literally) an act of congress to fire them. And if the service doesn't improve, people will go elsewhere.

I agree to an extent that "if you [have the gov't] build it, they will come". But that will have unintended side-effects. As cost of doing business rises in a municipality, business will simply go elsewhere.

However, that the state would consider passing a law to enforce capitalism is just backwards. Just don't write laws! Legislators don't seem to understand that is an option. You don't have to legislate everything! Jeez! I don't want wifi welfare or wifi regulated monopolies. I want the option of placing my money where I want.

And let me toss a bone to the socialists: If the majority of a municipality voted by due process in that town (local referendum, popularly elected officials, whatever)want wifi welfare, then have that option, no matter how much I personally dislike it. The state just doesn't need to concern itself with such matters.

Next thing you know, a Texas senator is going to introduce wifi legislation at the Federal level. There goes the neighborhood. :(

Ok, you are certainly welcome to your opinion but the simple fact is that it's not your decision to make. None of these "arguments" that I see on slashdot mean much to me. They imply that "information is free". Well it's not. It's only free if the creator wills it so. If the creator wishes their creations to be free, as many thousands of the readers of /. do with their open-source projects, then great! I think that FOSS is an excellent movement and a source of inspiration for others.

But what about those that happen to want to make money from their creations? They want to control the marketing, quality, distribution, public relations, etc of their product (or idea!). And why shouldn't they? Let's take an example. I make a piece of software. It's commercial, and I'm selling to large enterprises. It's a niche market so the market will pay...$3000 for this software. It is in my own best interest to protect the integrity and quality of my product so that my company will do well. If some guy takes my software and then sells it for $49, what happens?

Something like that could ruin me. And guess what happens if this is repeated en masse? You have created a situation where I am actually DISCOURAGED to take the time to create something. Hell, I might as well give up and wash cars for a living. Where are all the good ideas then?

Now, I realize most of you are socialists and communists (look up the definition sometime) so my arguments above will just either go over your head or you'll ignore them out of hand. I understand that. I won't convert someone to capitalism with a slashdot post. But what makes your world view more important than mine? Or to put it another way, why should your rights overrule mine? Because you think so? Now THAT makes a lot of sense. (That was sarcasm.)

Ok, let's bring this back on topic. Lucas made the movie, he can do whatever the hell he wants to do with it. (Like spit out flat dialog and complement it with poor acting.) If piracy of movies becomes commonplace, which has certainly happened in certain areas, people who would have gone to see the movie will instead download it for free or buy a cheap knock off DVD on a street corner. That is taking money from his pocket, and is taking your socialist views and pushing them on his capitalistic ones.

    Disclaimers:
    • I've pirated plenty of stuff in my time. I grew up.
    • The MPAA and RIAA can kiss my ass. They've made stupid mistakes as far as keeping up with the times is concerned.
    • "Bittorrent caused SW:Sith to be pirated" is retarded. Pirates did it. (Yarr me mateys!) It's a strawman argument used by sneaky people to influence the uninformed. The MPAA execs know this, they did so intentionally.

And even worse is that a bad (buggy) extension can ruin the whole experience.

    To answer your comment directly:
    1) FF has a half dozen mouse gesture and pie menu type things. It's confusing that there are so many, and the one I use has 50 million options I've never touched. It rocks though.
