TFA doesn't actually mention any problems, and most people on the non-public SP2 Beta news groups (disclaimer: I'm an SP2 technical tester) are reporting this beta is very stable. I haven't had any serious issues with it, and I've yet to see any proof of a 'show-stopper' that would cause such a delay.

Haven't you read the reports? When you put it in standby it steals your credit card and goes on a shopping spree, poisons your dog, microwaves your cat, gets intimate with your mother and your sister at the same time, torches your car, steals money from your favourite charity, sends insulting messages and incriminating photos to your boss, and turns your girlfriend into a lesbian.

The reason why I like Google is that their search engine works extremely well. In fact, how often does google search find what you're looking for?

It actually depends on how specialized your search is. For example I wouldn't use the general web engine to find academic papers or medical literature.

One of the problems with determining how good a search engine is is working out what it's not displaying. How do you do that comparison when Google's considered the only game in town?

I remember AltaVista back in the day wasn't so bad then it went through a period where it wasn't keeping up, and Google took over. I still seem to see periods where Google's search isn't returning what I expect and then it gets better again. I would like to see a second search engine that's just as diverse so that there's some competition.

Kelly needs to cut staff but is obviously squeamish about letting people go. Her best bet is to let d-bag Doug do the dirty work, after which giving him the axe will not only be easy, but gratifying. Then Kelly can avail herself of the current worker surplus to re-staff her leaner, meaner team. Chances are she will be able to trade-up across the board.

That doesn't work. People aren't going to forget that she let a good manager go, and put a douche bag in charge that fired half the staff.

Sure, Doug is wasting time with his machinations. So is Stuart with his guru schtick. The question is, who is more valuable to Kelly?

Sure if it's fake "guru schtick" but that's not what the article indicated.

When things go bad they take the blame. I think in the long run nice guys finish first. You can not trust someone who is a backstabber.

You mean like Bill Gates? Steve Ballmer? Steve Jobs?

I don't think you're being realistic. It's harder to be a good person and a good CEO than it is to be a successful CEO. It's also more worthwhile since having success without having to sacrifice your integrity and your soul may mean you get to enjoy that success a lot more.

Of course you can always find an anecdotal counterexample, but the one time I decided I wanted to get someone out of a management position that was interfering with my job, it wound up backfiring hugely (the situation was *worse* after I succeeded) and on a personal level it's something I regret to this day.

On the other hand, every time I've come into a job situation and behaved with honesty and integrity, it's worked out well for me. And I get to sleep at night

I agree that you should do your job with honesty and integrity and that in the long run it's the best. However your vague description of things going badly for you when you tried to be ruthless isn't a good example. All this suggests is that you did poorly at something you had no experience with.

Reminds me of the frustrated scene in "Office Space" where 3 software engineers are trying to work out how to launder money - 'I can't believe what a bunch of nerds we are. We're looking up "money laundering" in a dictionary.'. One of them points out that they're not stupid, just inexperienced. Huh? In the current economic climate, where you can only afford to keep some of your staff, you'd pick the shark who trashes moral, takes as much out of the company as he can, and doesn't do the job effectively? (I'm sorry but no matter what the article says about both being competentif you're spending your time being petty and passing the buck or stealing credit, that's less time you have to do your job competently) Meanwhile fire someone that could raise your moral by being fair to the employees you can keep? I have no idea if Chu is a good manager or not, just saying that the Peter Principle is something to be avoided.

That's rather unfair. I'm guessing this wasn't a one man technical effort and that Steven Chu led a team. Now that doesn't immediately make him competent to lead at the national level but I don't think he could be where he is without some management skills. In my experience the best managers I've had are ex-techies who've either lost interest, or patience, or passion...or have other responsibilities (usually one or more children) and who don't want to spend the time keeping up with every technical development any more. The only way to know if he'll do well at the national level is to try him out and see how he does.

Also they carry top end mobile GPUs. I'm right into flight simulators and get most of my "me time" on the train (1st person shooters occassionally catch my interest, but I wouldn't spend big money to play them). No Apple computer at the time of purchase would do for me what my current Dell laptop does. The prices on the Apple machines were the highest, and my experiences with Apple support make Dell's missed appointments etc look good. Oh and for that higher price the hard drives weren't as large, the processors were slower and I didn't get a complimentary 3 year warranty. I'm very excited about having a flight simulator, DVD player, chess machine, occassional games machine, portable book reader, music player. The more grunt and the less I had to pay the better.

What has bolstered them is this false perception that all things coming from Steve Jobs' head are creatively brilliant. You reap what you sew.

So in a nutshell, the CMB is the the radiation we see in every direction of the sky. It's a little more complicated but you can think of it as the afterglow of the big bang. (Note: That is an over-simplication. To understand it better you have to look at a timeline of what happened after the big bang, especially hyper-inflation and recombination).

The reason it's so important is that it is the result of and thus put limits on the conditions at the time of the Big Bang. Since we don't have time machines and can't observe the universe from the outside, it is a critical piece of observational data against which we test our theories.

It is a particularly important piece of the puzzle when trying to work out what's going on with regards to dark matter because the amount of dark matter and the way in which it formed must be consistent with conditions that produced the CMB we observe.
