I just put together something like this for myself under Windows.
Works like this:
Athlon 1200 with a cheap 1394 interface card sitting beside the TV with a Canopus ADVC-100 Analog/DV transcoder sitting on top. The output of my satellite receiver goes into the canopus box, then out of the canopus box into the VCR/TR.
I've written a simple winbatch script to remote control the "Scenalyzer Live" software to run the firewire interface and capture the video incoming from the ADVC-100. Hopefully the Scenalyzer author will add some command line switches to the software as well so the winbatch script can go away (not particularly elegant, but it works).
Remote controlling the whole thing with a Logitech wireless keyboard / mouse works very well.
When the script is finished capturing, winbatch exits. Once a day (early in the morning), virtualdub fires up at low task priority and automatically recompresses the captured file down to a much smaller DIVX5 file and deletes the original DV media (if that option is set). Since it's at such a low priority, it's not a big deal if another DV cap starts as virtualdub gets virtually no CPU time (ya, pun, ha, I know;).
If I choose not to delete the DV file, I can watch it back through the ADVC box into the TV. Most times I'll just go with the virtualdub file which looks very nice at 3/4 resolution and 30fps (deinterlaced). Can also be easily archived to CDR/DVD-R as well.
The interface isn't particularly elegant at the moment, but it works, can run mostly in automatic mode, and has the advantage of also being able to listen to MP3s, watch DiVX media, and of course, network to all of my other machines.
It was probably modded overrated because of your rant. You can say everything you were trying to say without being personally insulting to another poster and still get your point across.
If I had mod points at the moment, I would've modded it flamebait myself...
My biggest gripe is even though you've bought the tickets online, you still have to wait in the line with every other schmuck.
I WANT RESERVED SEATS! I do not want to have to pay $12 for a ticket to a popular movie only to find that I need to get to the theatre 90 minutes or more before showtime if I want a 1/2 decent seat.
I want to be able to get to the theatre 20-30 minutes before the show starts and get the prime seats that I paid for/reserved.
And I could only stand the drivel for around 10 minutes before I switched it to something else.
To all the doubters, let's put the issue to rest like this:
The US and USSR were competing neck and neck to get both astronauts into space and then to the moon. Like adolescent schoolboys, they took every opportunity to embarrass their opponent in the space race.
So...
When the US went to the moon, the USSR would've been watching with EVERY intelligence instrument in their posession. Every radio receiver, every telescope, every single spy would've been trained on the mission.
If the US had faked it, you can be sure that while they probably could've got away with fooling the general US public, there's absolutely NO way they could ever fool all of the scientists and analysts of the USSR doing the monitoring.
When the astronauts were transmitting from the moon, it would've been simplicity itself to check the signal source. If the signals were coming from anywhere other than the moon, the USSR would've had it in the press so fast that the ink wouldn't be dry on the page before the western media picked-up on it.
Not to mention every other country on the planet with radio antennas, telescopes, etc...
I'm sure some mental deficients would try and argue that a relay station was set up on the moon... Oh, but wait, that would require "going to the moon to set it up"... Time to just call it quits guys. How about working on conspiracy theories about aliens in area 57 instead? It'll sell better too...
I feel for the American public - the next time some terrorist attack happens, won't everyone feel wonderful that instead of working to prevent a real threat to the country, the FBI is hard at work persecuting people who have stolen bandwidth.
I don't blame the FBI, I rather suspect that once an official complaint is filed, their hands are tied and they must investigate no matter how mentally-challenged that complaint is.
It's a wonder the FBI isn't called out every time someone bypasses their power meter or water main too! Maybe it's time to call them if someone is watering their flowers during a drought.
The problem is much like the much-loved "reduced warantee" on hard-drives where all the manufacturers conspire to reduce warantees at the same time, the same could be true for the broadband industry.
If all providers cap at the same time, then all of them make more money and nobody loses out...
Never doubt the power of the dollar to induce competitors to work together to milk more money out of their customers.
I agree though that companies should NOT be allowed to advertise their service as unlimited in this case.
Some sort of FCC/CRTC regulation is needed where companies MUST include information on bandwidth and transfer caps in their advertising, and not in 3 point font at the bottom of a TV commercial or print ad.

This is a good reason why I drive down to my Dad's place in Seattle (I live in Vancouver), park my car at his house, and fly out of Seatac.
The good ol' Canadian Govt (swindlers 'r' us), are also charging an additiona $20-25 in "security fees" each way as well. Not to say that any of it goes to airports to improve security. Nope, it all goes into general revenue in Ottawa.
One local carrier had a "fly for $1" day to illustrate how insane the fees were. The ticket cost $1, with all of the extra fees, levies, etc added on, the final cost of the ticket was nearly $100.
Followed by: "The Sound Quality Of This Disc Has Intentionally Been Reduced To Prevent You From Pirating It You Thief - Now Buy It Like We Tell You To!"
Maybe when publishing companies (music and film both) start realizing that consumers are the ones who pay their salary, they'll start treating us with less contempt. Sorry to say that there are a whole lot of people who are NOT sheep content to be shorn of their hard-earned money.
At some point when faced with all of the DRM crap that companies are trying to force us into, I'll just decide to move on to other activities which are less technologically oriented.
Even now, the rise in film prices to over $12 per ticket is severely limiting the number of movies I go to. That doesn't mean I download them on the PC or anything, but I just spend my time doing other things instead...
The only one I really got into was Cobra Command (not the other non-laser version).
I really got hooked at it in an arcade in a really run-down section of town when I was young. I got pretty good at it though, got the highscore on the console which was a good highpoint for me.
Interestingly enough, I managed to pick the game up for a PC emulator, complete with MPG-2 video and sound. Pretty cool (but I still can't beat it);P
Well, it's not going to affect me much, because I don't plan on buying any of their "non-CDs" anyway.
If I need their music, I'll download uncorrupted versions from the 'net. Shame as I hate to have to download rather than buy legal versions, but if someone is knowingly trying to sell me defective merchandise, I don't have much choice do I?
I've seen lots of posts saying that it came from ATI...
Everyone should get a clue...
It's not like ATI put the alpha on their website for download and said "Go get it".
At the very most, the evidence we have so far is poor english in a chatroom log. Not exactly the most reliable source.
In the event that it did originate from somewhere insite ATI, it's more likely that some summer intern copied it while they were working there, and took it home to post. I find it incredibly unlikely that a member of ANY reputable company would take the chance on posting something like this.
Maybe it's a disgruntled former-employee, maybe it's a member of the cleaning staff, who knows. Maybe it's completely unrelated and someone is just trying to stir up the crap (successfully it seems) for ATI.
Has anyone considered this may have been a "planned leak" to build hype? It gets MUCH more publicity this way than a regular demo release (which will no-doubt follow shortly).
A leaked release is much more tantilizing and cool to have than a regular demo. Will build hype too.
I look at it this way - I've already spent $650 (cdn) buying the top of the line graphics card based on their alpha demo. I'm sure as hell going to BUY (yes BUY) the full version when it comes out. I'll pre-order it the second it becomes available (in a store other than EB).
Sounds to me like the FBI should go after the cable company for using up valuable resources for this kind of crap.
A cable company making an example out of customers, or fighting terrorism and REAL crime... Wonder which the FBI's resources would be better spent at...
Because my purposes are watching DVDs and DiVXs hooked up to my TV;P
I really don't care if someone watches the keystrokes on that machine.
Then again, I use one at work too to write emails and the like. I'm not particularly concerned, if someone thinks the stuff I write about at work is interesting enough to snoop my keyboard for, I pity da foo.
Well well well... Good old ICORRUPT axing public seats and generally stacking the deck so as to have no outside influce.
Nothing like a good, old-fashioned, high-tech star chamber!
Ya, they need to be totally dissolved, and a new body put in place with rules strictly defined BEFORE any members are put in place, with some basic charter principles that can't be changed.
Could it not argue that having Madonna's signature on your iPod would decrease the value?
Yup, it apparently looks great if you can spend $5,000 to $10,000 on a plasma screen :P
For the rest of us with normal TVs however, it's a bit red.
Actually, I wasn't too unhappy with mine - it looks pretty decent on my TV.

Ugh. Paranormal. Yawn.
Possibly my least-favorite genre, although anything to do with massive conspiracy theorys comes a close second.
The first few seasons of X-Files was pretty good, but I stopped watching when it started getting really wierd.

Well, it would sure influence my decision to purchase an X-Box, knowing that MS might decide to cut me off if I modify it.
I think I'll pass. Thanks anyway MS. I'll go with a PS2 or just good Ol' PC games instead.
Riiighhhhtttttt ... so "Joe Public" is reading /. and Wired now is he(/she)? :)
;P
I sure hope not. I'd have to leave then - I can't stand it when something cool becomes trendy.

Uh, the CPUs used in the PalmOS line of PDAs (to date) is a "Motorolla Dragonball" processor. That's the name of the chip...
Nothing to do with an awful anime series...
Stuck in an airport.... In France....

I have never seen speakers with a digital output :)
They have to output an analog waveform at some point (ie: the drive for the speaker cone), and at that point it's vulnerable.
I used to record phonecalls by clipping the mic leads from my casette deck to the wires on the back of the earpiece. Worked great.

Let me put it like this...
:P :)
I got ahold of the alpha demo at around 10am on Friday.
I played it on my GeForce2GTS at around 10:05am on Friday.
I picked up an ATI Radeon 9700 at 5pm on Friday. Thank dawg for leaked Alphas on payday

My logitech cordless desktop has a "Secure Mode" that can be enabled where the keystrokes between the receiver and the keyboard are encrypted.
It's probably not any high-powered military strength security or anything, but I'm sure it's sufficient for my purposes.
