Personally I believe FreeBSD is better, especially Mac OS X with FreeBSD Darwin.
However, I'll be lucky if my game gets accepted without a Linux version.

which is why I'm sticking to a Java 2 engine, with hardly any native code (OS X only).

    I'm doing a civ type game, a space game & a wargame.

finding good 3D software for the mac is easy, Maya is out now for OS X.1 and is available for anyone with Carracho (carracho.de) or MacPhex (try versiontracker.com) and broadband internet.

definately get as much ram as you can, you can put 1.5 gig in a G4 or G5.

He downloaded tons of music videos, movies, episodes of band of brothers & games.

I did try civ3, but it had some problems displaying. Anyway, I was disappointed Civ3 was so simplified.

A Civ game should involve strategic thinking...
So,I've got a Civ style game in progress...

The tech tree is larger, more governments, hex based map, more units, private enterprise, more buildings, more wonders.

Specific governments have special units & wonders only they can build. (Anarchy has Fight Club wonder, can build anarchist)

There are lots more resources, unit orders, diplomatic options and cultural styles.

I admit, I've seen civ3 when my neighbour had his pc on my cable modem while my computer was down.

Civ 3 is barely better than civ2 in most places, worse in some respects.
Empire Earth is really overrated and lacks balance.

I am doing a civilization style game, the main difference is the expanded government types, more units, more military realism and massive dyson sphere internet game.
There are more wonders, with specific wonders for governments. e.g: Anarchy has Fight Club, Fascism has the Holocaust, Dictatorship has Ministry of Truth, Plenty, Peace & Love, etc ...

The map is hex based and cities may run over multiple hexes.

You also have private enterprise (unless communist, ecotopian or utopian government) building city improvements.

It should be a lot cooler than Civ or EE.
