A few months ago my GF's sister asked me about a Vista machine with 512M RAM. I told her flat out that it would be a bad idea to buy that, and expressed my opinion that the vendor should probably be subjected to various tortures for putting Vista on such an underpowered box.
I think the above posters comparison to gangs is accurate. The gangs go after snitches/collabarators first, and the cops/Americans whenever they can. But they still blow the hell out of each other.
Britain, France, and the USA waited as long as they could before engaging Hitler. It's just that the US was considerably farther away, so could wait longer. And we supported Britain, France, and Russia from the beginning, even though it took Pearl Harbor to get us to full war.
My opinion: The Middle East is a critical area because of the oil. We wanted a stronger foothold in there, and that meant military action. Saddam was the obvious target. Unfortunately, our leadership was stupid and thought that once we toppled the dictator, the people would LOVE us. Bzzt, wrong!
It's quite simple. Put your online nickname--if the Google results are flattering. If they're not, then don't. It's really no different from anything else you'd include on your resume.
I tried that, but I just found documentaries about primitive man, and a few Geiko ads.
Personally, I haven't seen much difference between Vista, OSX, and Fedora in that regard. I enter my root password when I update the system or change the clock, or try to access files outside my "sandbox" in either OS. Windows has more crappy, misbehaving software because they were half a decade later than they should have been, but the OS is handling it the same way the competition is.
A desktop OS, by near definition, is used almost exclusively by one person.
Are you sure about that? Most non-slashdotters have a wife and one or more kids. Some of them don't have a seperate computer for every family member. I guarantee that if my GF or her young nieces used my computer on a regular basis, I'd want them to have seperate accounts.
I just recently got my iPhone, but I'll be putting it to the test this Christmas when my mom and I visit my aunt. In a small town. In Iowa. If it works there, it will probably work almost anywhere.
If you're halfway competent and intelligent, you continue to learn from experience, and very soon know MORE than your teachers did.
Not neccesarily. It was obvious to me that my COBOL teacher knew MUCH more than he actually taught, due to time limits. I certainly learned far more on the job than I did in school, but I have no way of knowing whether I caught up to my old teacher in knowledge.
The real problem is with NEW hardware. Linux usually works very well with 5 year old hardware, but sooner or later, I'll want to buy new stuff, and chances are good that Linux won't work with it yet.
There was one big difference between XP then and Vista now. Most XP users upgraded from Win9X. Win9X was total crap on stability. If you went a day without a reboot, you were doing well.
XP is pretty stable, and SP2 isn't a total disaster on security. With Vista, you have all of the growing pains that XP went through with few reasons to "upgrade".
Agreed! I seldom want "instant" communication. If I do, the telephone works fine. For my online communication, it's far easier for me to shoot off a quick email, or post something on a forum, fix & eat my dinner, call my GF (on said phone), and then check back for an answer.
I bought a new computer shortly after Windows XP was released. My old PC had been getting on in years, and when it died I picked up my current laptop to replace it. I was a bit uncertain about using XP since I had heard so many bad reviews about it, but it came pre-installed so I figured I would give it a go. After a few months of using it, I realised I was right to be worried. At least on my laptop, it was slow as hell, and buggy. It would freeze for no reason, and crash out of programs that Windows 95 had run without a hitch. Several of my friends had similar experiences. I considered going back to the store and requesting a tech have a look at it, but having worked in a similar place myself, I figured they wouldn't be able to do anything that I hadn't tried myself (and at the very best, they would send it away to be "looked at" and I would be sans laptop for a few weeks). So instead, I uninstalled the OS, and reinstalled 95. My machine is now flying along and hasn't crashed since.
The big difference is, Win95 was a steaming pile. My work machine crashed from 2 to 15 times a day (I actually counted the crashes). WinXP is quite good for stability. And SP2 isn't a total screw-up on security.
People were willing to put up with XP's immaturaty to escape Win9X. They are less willing to do so with Vista.
Considering how many moles are in CTU, I definitely see the resemblence to Microsoft security.

No, because there is a real possibility of confusing dog shit with Microsoft products.
Agreed. They can also patch Linux or Gnome or any other problem package if neccesary.
I'm fairly sure my old 8088 could "run" Windows 2.0. Does that mean I can call it "Vista capable"?

It's also proof that Slashdot can drive one bats.

One could say that the Olsen twins SHOULD be outlawed.

No, I haven't. And though the commercials weren't the ONLY reason I quit, they were the final nail in the coffin.

The streets aren't really suitable for bikes either.

To quote Aladdin in the Disney movie, "You're only in trouble if you get caught". Like most criminals, they don't expect to get caught.
Yeah, anyone who thinks 25 is old should wait until they're 47.
Get off my lawn!

3. Not enough new features to make people overlook #1 & #2.
