Trust me, COBOL's not dead yet! Where I work, they're trying to replace the old COBOL software with Java, and at the rate they're going, COBOL will outlive all of us!
When did they die? I haven't paid close attention, since I've had CableModem for years, but for quite awhile (a lot longer than 3 months) LoseModems were everywhere! And "real" modems cost a whole lot more than $20!

Introduction to Debian

I'm not a Debian user, but if you kept RedHat running for 3 years of tinkering, you probably won't have much trouble doing the same with Debian. Of course, too much tinkering can foobar ANY system.
1. Ads I watch on purpose. These are very rare, and usually involve pretty girls in skimpy outfits. Humor can snare me too, but most advertisers are too clueless to do it right.
2. Ads I ignore. This is 90% of the TV ads. If I'm watching live I'll probably see/hear part of it while I go to the bathroom/kitchen/stick my nose in a book. Otherwise, I'll FF past it.
3. Ads I can't stand. Bad sound effects will piss me off everytime. If I'm watching delayed, I'll FF past it. If I'm watching live, I'll "mute" until the show resumes, then pause for 15 minutes to ensure I won't have to suffer through any more commercials! If I didn't have the option of FFing or muteing, I'd go bonkers, destroy the TV with an axe, then go after the advertiser!
Budget? If "Big Bobs" would kill & eat that annoying bird that goes "CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!" he'd save on bird food, he'd get a good meal, and I'd get a better commercial! He doesn't need a "budget"!
I get the feeling that RMS isn't just complacent about the replacement of Linux, but indeed eager to see it go.
Certainly, RMS would prefer his Hurd, but I think even he knows it's not ready for prime time yet. That leaves BSD as a replacement, and idealogially, it's worse than Linux! At least Linux is GPL.
Funny, I don't remember complaining about that. TiVo's suggestions have turned up several interesting shows I wouldn't have noticed on my own. And the ones I'm not interested in, well, it's not like they do anything but eat up disk space that would otherwise be empty, so no harm done.
YMMV! My Tivo's suggestions usually sux! I have gotten a couple of good shows among the crap, but it's rare. It's not a problem, since the crap gets auto-deleted quickly enough, but it confirms my opinion that a stupid machine can't predict what I want
I agree! Mon$anto has the same kind of ethics as Micro$oft, but Monsanto is messing with our FOOD! IMO, they are far more dangerous than Microsoft will ever be!
The terrorists want to destroy our economy (bombing the WTC). SCO wants to destroy our economy (suing the whole world). Therefore, SCO is with the terrorists!
"I hate Perl, it ate my hampster"! Besides its syntax sux. Python's probably not quite as well documented as Perl, but it's easier to use, and when they return to their programs after summer vacation, they might actually understand what they do.
For one thing you CAN 30-second skip through commercials, though it's "undocumented". Also, comparing Tivo's FF speed to my VCR's is like comparing a track star to a garden snail. Lastly, Tivo has a whole slew of other features beyond what your VCR has.

5. Annoying sound effects! For example that dumb bird at "Big Bobs" that flys around saying "CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP"!

There's another reason RMS couldn't interest programmers in his OS. They thought he let a "new turd"!

That reminds me of the following exchange:
Willow: "Have you googled her?"
Xander: "Willow, she's only 16!"
Option 3: one side takes a dive to keep from getting beat to a bloody pulp (students vs RIAA)
Actually, that boulder is going to roll back down on THEIR side. *squish* Not a pretty sight!
The terrorists want to destroy our economy (bombing the WTC). SCO wants to destroy our economy (suing the whole world). Therefore, SCO is with the terrorists!
So, Microsoft didn't even invent FUD? They copied it from IBM? That figures!
I have a cell phone in case my car dies, or I'm stuck in traffic or somesuch, but unless I'm expecting a phone call, I keep it turned off.
The average 10 year old would probably do better at it than the average Mom & Dad.

Perl? Wouldn't the kid be better off with Python?

First, Slackware uses a "raw" kernel. Second, if you use XFS, you're FORCED to use your distros kernel (assuming your distro supports XFS).
If RH is pricing itself out of the market you have other choices.
Here's how it works:
Windows supports everything but crashes at the drop of a hat - any hat.
Linux supports supports most hardware and is usually stable.
FreeBSD supports some hardware and is very stable.
OpenBSD doesn't support anything, but it doesn't ever crash!
IIRC, root uses csh as the default, but the regular user gets sh.
