    Kirk is NOT a match for Spock in physical combat. When Kirk had to get Spock angry to counter alien spores, Spock knocked Kirk from one end of the room to the other, and would have caved in Kirk's skull with a chair if he hadn't snapped out of it. Also, Kirk's the underdog in chess. He sometimes wins because he plays "illogically"

    I would have just emailed a plaintext message "Achmed, meet me at WTC at 9". The whole f**king FBI/CIA could have read that message Sept 10 and not thought anything about it.

    Its worth the extra hassle of counting it because once in a while their mistake is in my favor.

    I had my wallet stolen once. I wasn't too worried about the $20 cash that was in it. I was very worried about the debit card to a $2000 bank account in the wallet. I was also worried about the credit card with $9000 avail credit. Yes, I got them cancelled, but I was paranoid about watching the statements for a long time. I also had the inconvienience of being without those cards. Luckily, I was able to withdraw enough cash to eat with for the week to took to get replacement cards.

    To KDE 2.1? I like KDE 2.1 but it's slow on my K6 450 with 64M RAM. Is 2.2 faster or even slower?

    If I were a terrorist I'd just send a plaintext message. "Achmed, meet me at the WTC at 9" Everything's out in the open except exactly what I meant by "meeting me" and the govt still wouldn't get it until after the fact. Assuming they even read the message.

    I would certainly trade CONVIENIENCE for security. I can easily accept having to wait at airports, sporting events, etc. and maybe not being able to take my carry-on luggage or backpack with me. I also accept having to have my work ID picture visible while at work. None of that impacts my freedom; I can still go to those sporting events, I can still fly whereever, I can still go to work. I am NOT willing to sacrifice FREEDOM however! I don't know of any of those proposed anti-freedom bills that would even make me any safer anyway.

    If I were a terrorist, I wouldn't even bother with crypto. I'd just send a plaintext message. "Hey, Acmed, meet me at WTC at 9". He'd know what I really meant.

    Depending on the level of surveilence and how "hair-trigger" the government is, it could be hard to avoid critisizing them. For example, if the microphones required by law to be in my living room heard me say something bad about the "Shrub", I could be lcoked up without a trial before I could explain that I was talking about my yard!

    It may not be proven that more guns == less crime, but it CAN be proven that less guns != less crime! It's nearly impossible to legally get a gun in Washington DC. Wow, it should really have a low crime rate *snicker*! Gun control is NOT the answer! What legitamate purpose does a handgun serve? Well, if a 200 lb rapist kicked in my g/f's door when I wasn't there, I'd sure feel a lot better if she were armed. Self-defence is legitamate, regardless of what Liberal Democrats say!

    That all sounds good. Unfortunatly, most people are NOT highly trained! You, obviously, have planned several ways to fight a hijacker. I have a much shorter list, which probably would not be effective against a trained opponent. Most people have NO plans, no fighting tricks, and, most important of all, their first instinct would be to hide, keep their heads down, and pray. Fear proved 75% effective as a weapon.

    I was at work. I was oblivious until I overheard some people in the next aisle talking about planes crashing into the Pentagon & the WTC. I still didn't really know what was happening. I tried to get online to Yahoo news, but everything slowed to a crawl. Soon after we got official news on the loudspeaker. At about 11:30 CDT we evacuated our building(I'm a federal employee). I was mentally numb the rest of the day thru the next.

    The $5 gas was just plain greed! And it wasn't everywhere. The 2 stations near me were both at $1.57. In spite of the mile long lines.

    Suppose I wrote a killer app. How would I sell it? I'm just one guy with a full-time job and no selling skills. Maybe I could convince 5 of my friends to plunk down the green stuff. Then I'd have 5 guys hounding me, asking why it didn't work right, wanting me to add this, that, or the other kewl new feature. If I include the source code, I can tell them to make their own damn fixes/enhancements. And if they like it and give it to a bunch of their buddies, it won't line my pockets, but I can say "look at all those people using MY program!"

    I wrote 2 programs early in my career. One was the first big program I ever wrote. I didn't know what I was doing, it looked like crap, and another programmer ended up rewriting the whole thing less than a year later. The other program was originally supposed to be a one-shot program. However, after getting bit by the first program, I decided I was going to do this one right! It may have taken a little longer, and been more effort to write and comment everything properly, but this "one-shot" program was known to be one of the easiest programs to maintain/enhance until it became obsolete 12 years later.
