  8. I also remember that driving from Ohio into Pennsylvania was kind of like driving from Alabama into Florida... one minute, you're on a wide, freshly-paved road... 3 minutes later, the shoulders are gone, the asphalt is a half step above compacted gravel, there are potholes big enough to trash a lifted monster truck, and the road itself looks like it hasn't been improved since the 1950s.

I've had that in reverse. I was driving on some bridge, dodging potholes, and suddenly the road was great. I looked over, and sure enough, there was a sign that said "Welcome to Kansas".

  9. Yes, thats why we have had interstate bridges collapsing, and the roads in my affluent area are made up of interlocking patches over potholes.

Id hate to see the roads in areas that arent affluent.

Awhile back, I was surprised to hear that my state, Missouri, had the 4th worst roads in the nation. The surprise was that there were 3 states worse than us!

That's exactly what my mom did the first time the "IRS" called her. She called her tax preparer and he told her it was a scam.

I'm an old guy, and for most of my life, POTS was iron-reliable. I picked up my phone, and it worked through rain, snow, sleet, hail, and even when the power was out.

Lately, my mom was having trouble with her landline. It started going out everytime it rained. I think it went out once when it just got humid! AT&T did "fix" it, but they must have just done a quick patch, because it started doing it again soon. They sent someone again, and did a better job of fixing it, but who knows when it will go out again.

The good thing is, it did encourage her to get a cellphone, which I'd been trying to nudge her to for awhile.

It's a funny thought experiment to consider how generations 1000 years from now will regard our current behavior as most likely crude and they will be missing vast amounts of information and context to make sense of what little has survived. The way we describe civilizations from long ago is kind of like how we describe a pack of wild apes. I imagine future generations will do the same to use.
