Personally I'd go with VNC, which is ok as long as your OS is running ok. It exists for just about every platform as both client/server.
I use it all the time.
If VNC isn't able to run, most likely there's a more serious issue. In that case, get the cart with the Monitor, Keyboard and wheel it over to the rack. That's not every day (provided you don't run windows).
I personally go months without a monitor. Just VNC into the box when needed.
Timbuktu is another option. Slightly smoother and faster. Though not available free.
I personally wouldn't have needed that as a child. I went to a Catholic school when I was learning to write. The feedback I got was from a nun with a yardstick. No talking pen needed.
Seriously. The IRS really needs to fund a cross-platform open source solution. One that doesn't require you give business to any particular company.
Could be done in Java.
Or perhaps (soon) using XULRunner.... XUL frontend, JS coded... take advantage of mozilla's cross platform capabilities and webservices functionality. Could even in theory be a Firefox extension!
At a minimum, the IRS should be providing kiosk's for taxes. Diskless monitors/motherboards/keyboards.. Stripped down linux with Firefox... go to your library, use a kiosk, file... leave.
I wasn't interested much in computers until I was about 9 or 10. I first touched LOGO when I was about 6 or 7. Got into it... but didn't quite turn me into a geek.
I got a VTECH "Pre-computer power pad" (or some name similar) when I was about 10 or 11. It had a limited version of BASIC... and I got pretty into that.... lets just say I had memory problems pretty quick with that thing.
Then I started playing with my dad's 1980's IBM PC (the original fun-machine). Yes, I got into programming on a machine much older than me. That eventually died.
Tinkered a bit with Apple Script for a while, and got into web development.
Now I hack up some Mozilla fun every so often... web developer, and many other geeky ventures.
I prefer Mac OS X, but love Linux as well. Tolerate windows.
Common hackers of his level of inovation, and to a degree hatred of authority/corporations really dislike windows and love the freedom and inovation of Linux.
Seems like everything he touches is Windows related.
Just suprising.
Though somewhat depressing...
it's inovators like him, who really make software people like. Say what you will about WinAmp... but it was one heck of a popular app. Same with everything else he was involved in.
HE is what Linux could really use: someone to create the golden tools.
I was there during August for a week... one of the most beautiful places on earth...
even took a trip up the volcano on a bus tour... the spanish have little regard for road safety... that was a giant bus on a very narrow twisty road, with a tiny guardrail... and a drop unlike anything I've ever seen before. The asphalt in some places goes right off a cliff... and the little green dots on the bottom are clusters of big palm trees.... needless to say it's a bit strange coming from the US where any road with more than a 3 ft drop off the side has a giant concrete barrier.
Ironic to think that beautiful island could doom my east coast life in the NYC area.
Great view from up top... amazing sand dunes, beach, and beautiful blue water. Before that the only place I've seen such landscape is in pictures. Hawaii is nice... but the view isn't as good.
My ideal laptop for college was an Apple G4, but school insisted on Windows for it's 'stability, reliability, and security'.... yea, that's a joke in itself.
Decided to get an IBM Thinkpad with a Pentium IV Mobile.
Everyone with laptops running P4's seen to have issues with heat, and power consumption. Despite my oversided screen, dual HD's, and CD-RW... I'm actually doing all right.
It cost more to get a laptop with a real mobile chip, rather than just a P4 as some companies offer... but I think it saved me a lot of trouble.
That query will display just my free iPod posts. I posted as quick as I can, so the dates are very accurate to the actual events. Even a few photos posted at the end.
I did sign up for a freeflatscreen, though haven't completed the requirements for that one (if you want to see blog posts for free flat screens... help out:-D ).
All I can say is: I got mine. I have no idea about everyone else who participated, but mine came to my door. So for me, it worked.
neighbors snooping on other's connection. If you just an off the shelf Access Point, anyone in your co-op could just use Ethereal, or any of it's other cheap commerical equivilants and snoop.... way to easy.
Drive by's. This is my personal belief on how the first cyber terrorist-attack, and the future of child pornography will be done. To keep things more obscure these guys will war drive until they find an open network. Then send their spam, pictures of ____, virus, or whatever evil they want... then just drive away. Perhaps mask the MAC address with one of the many utilities out there.
I'm convinced that's already done on a routine basis. And I'm convinced that will become more popular. Most WiFi Access Points have no security. It's easy for anyone to approach a neighborhood and do that.
Personally, I'd convince everyone to pitch in and go hardwired. At least then everyone is responsible for their own jack. They can get a WiFi AP if they want, or keep it wired. (Also get better performance as most WiFi AP's are 11Mbps *shared*... not 11Mbps per connection). Would be a bit more secure.
Not to mention the ever so popular "your mantaining this thing... help me get connected... etc etc.". Your going to become their tech support. Viruses, spam, etc. etc... it's all going to you.
If, for example, your birthday is March 7, it will ALWAYS fall on a Wednesday, for evermore. Christmas Day will always fall on a Sunday, which will be pleasing to Christians, but, will also be pleasing to companies who currently lose up to two weeks of work to the Christmas/New Year's annual mess. New Year's Day will always be on a Sunday, too.
Ah yes... that's pleasing to christians. Because if Christmas falls on a Tuesday they have to sit through 2 masses in a week.:-D
Like anyone with a laptop needs more than read only access to the world.
Face it... if your geeking it up long enough for your CPU to kill your sperm... most likely because you don't need the sperm.
I prefer to just consider it birth control.... Look at pr0n in Mp4 format before having sex. Your CPU spikes a bit, causing more heat, killing sperm. Your sperm dies, your "in the mood"...

Does anyone else think it was inspired by Logitech's product?
I personally wouldn't have needed that as a child. I went to a Catholic school when I was learning to write. The feedback I got was from a nun with a yardstick. No talking pen needed.
Yard sticks is mightier than the sword
Wow...
did you come up with that yourself? Or are you in charge of product placement at ABC?
How about Paris Hilton rent some space on her vag and ass?
Both are high visibility, so it's guaranteed to be seen by millions.
Would be great ad space for someone like Durex or Trojan.
I'm willing to be an ad broker on that deal.
Cheap advertising in Paris!
Out of curiousity...
was it an accident your laptop was placed on the ground and your car ran over it?
Perhaps I'm paranoid, but my computer has never touched the ground. Desks, lap, seat, bed, case, shelf, etc. etc.
But never: driveway, highway, street.
Maybe it's just me?
I got this via email the other day, and decided to post it for others to see:
Tsunami Scam
Sounds like a nigerian letter, but with Tsunami mixed in there.
Pencil/paper isn't free either... since time=money. Time I spend filling out paperwork for the IRS is time I could (and would) be making money.
So no... it doesn't exist.
Your current options:
Now why is it that my taxes aren't being used to help make tax season easier?
Seriously. The IRS really needs to fund a cross-platform open source solution. One that doesn't require you give business to any particular company.

I took a stab at it, gave it a go, and a writeup.
I decided to blog rather than post it here, so I can edit/modify corrections as necessary.
Microsoft AntiSpyware, a first look
I'm personally disappointed. I see signs of bad policy more than bad software.
I'm 21 now...

I seriously got mine from freeipods.com. I documented the entire thing (play by play) on my blog:

Just my $0.02
A few things I see here:
neighbors snooping on other's connection. If you just an off the shelf Access Point, anyone in your co-op could just use Ethereal, or any of it's other cheap commerical equivilants and snoop.... way to easy.

IMHO they are the ones who walk around in tin foil hats.
e direc t.html
:-/
Despite all their privacy ranting on how the world is trying to guess the size of your penis....
Note the link for http://www.annualcreditreport.com
actually links to:
http://www.epic.org/privacy/fcra/freereportr
That's right... they redirect, and that link only. Hmm... they aren't doing any sort of tracking are they?
Put the tin foil hats back on, and get back in the blast shelter.
No joke...
- fun to try and close them all... like a game
- funny ads sometimes
- interesting products
To the point where they won't update to SP2 because they think even if you disable popup blocker it still stops some of them.
Favorite App: gator.
You'd think this was a joke, but some people actually enjoy it.
I have a friend who collects spam too.
Here's a mirror of the page.
Mirror
Payments go through: sspitzer (@) sspitzer.org just as the original page (he's collecting for them).
That way... if you don't want people to get access to your account after you die. It's there for it to be known.
IMHO I think quite a few people would object to that becoming public after they die.
4.) What happens to my birthday?
If, for example, your birthday is March 7, it will ALWAYS fall on a Wednesday, for evermore.
Christmas Day will always fall on a Sunday, which will be pleasing to Christians,

Isn't that how LZW earned it's reputation?
no better way to slashdot a website than to link directly to a video.

life is good.
I thought they were talking about Macromedia ColdFusion...
:-D
everyone I knew who used that junk is jumping off the ship like it hit an iceburg.
Then again, DOE using ColdFusion... wouldn't be shocking. Perhaps for security purposes?
