  1. I'm voting for the PSP on PSP And DS Duke It Out · · Score: 1

Call me crazy, but the PSP will win, here's my reconing:

    - PlayStation typically has more adult games (an audience more willing to plunk down the cash for it).
    - PlayStation has somewhat dominated the console market recently.
    - PlayStation has much more buzz than the billion+1 attempts Nintendo has made over portable device. Good marketing is key.
    - Playstation has the movie ability. Something that parents will like (for those long car rides). Keeps kids quiet for a while. Nintendo DS isn't as multi-purpose.
    - Hackers wouldn't mind a PSP because it has WiFi and a decent CPU... perfect for getting Linux and perhaps MiniMo running on it.

Overall, the market has grown up. Games aren't just for little kids. The baby boomers kids are now teens/young adults. That's a GIGANTIC market with some cash at hand... and a LOVE of games.

I'm voting PSP because it's got a bit better of an offering, and is perfect for the largest audience.

  4. Parents on Students Do Better Without Computers · · Score: 1

I'm curious how the parent factor plays in.

i.e. I'm willing to bet most of the students who use computers a lot have minimal parental interaction (computer babysits kid). Parents tend to not be as on top of kid to do homework (prioritize), see grades, etc. etc.

I'm curious what the research would show if that was taken into account.

I can prove laptops to be deadly if I study them used behind the wheel of the car (the jerk who is using it on the passenger seat while driving). But when you see that only a fraction of a percent are used that way... it changes the perspective.

IMHO it's up to the parents to regulate.

They lived up to their reputation. You can see my blog posts on getting a free iPod here. I did my best to cover every step... including the waiting.

What I found is you typically will wait about 3-5 weeks after you complete the requirements, until something ships.

But they do ship... and I have yet to pay a penny to complete an offer (there are typically 1 or 2 completely free ones).

    2. News is organization of DATA. Data will always be free. Why would I pay the NYT for data, when someone else will post it for free, and use ads to support it? The person showing the ads will gain 100% of the market. Easily gain 100% of the market. I'm not going to pay for data, since everyone can give me the same quality.

Even if they ALL went to pay methods, a few things still have weight:

People expect to be able to get news online. If it all went paid service, ISP's would make deals with news providers to ensure "free" (Included in price) news for their customers... so still free news.

News is just organization of data. It's not something people will pay for.

  16. Or is this for silicon valley? on California Wants GPS Tracking Device in Every Car · · Score: 3, Insightful

Is this a chance to give Silicon Valley a boost by providing Hardware/software for this?

IMHO this would be a more practical approach:

    - Put all cars into classes, based on milage per gallon, and the emissions. 1-10.

    - Add tax to gas based on car as a percentile Hence if your car is an 8 (heavy emissions), it would be 8%.

For commecial vehicles, you can subtract 3. Simply because buses are good (keep people from driving themselves), and big trucks carry more with less emissions than several smaller ones. Also would put less of a burdon on commerce.

    what does this solve?
    1. No need for GPS
    2. Puts emphasis on both cars that get better milage AND reducing milage.
    3. Doesn't burdon a particular party.

That would be cheaper, and more inclusive.

IMHO this plan is an attempt to regenerate some electronic industries within the state, rather than serve a monetary, or ecologicial purpose.

What I'm saying is SEO is essentially useless. It serves no benefit to the business. A business doesn't stand based on a handful of sales. And those that do survive on that few (mainly aerospace) don't get found on Google, it's word of mouth.

It's content that makes it worth while.

Why didn't you like AOL? Their service suck?

Why do you like some ISP's? becuase their service is good?

Are you more likely to choose an ISP based on their Google Rank? Or because a friend says "they are GREAT"? Or because a bunch of slashdotters say "these guys rock"?

WORD OF MOUTH is the best marketing ever.

On the net, search ranking is essentially useless. Anyone who considers it important needs to re-evaluate their business. Unless of course you ARE a search engine.

    3. It's not a business strategy! You ultimately need to have something more.

    4. SPAM. How do you think search engine optimization promises super high rankings? They use their bots to spam blogs, forums, guest books, etc. To inflate google based on page rank. Effective? Yea, even with the new rel="nofollow", but it's not good. And could get you blackisted as a spammer as many domains are finding.
