The article seems to make some claim that mp3's, video clips, photos, etc are different from file attachments. I've been able to attach files to ICQ for years, but you have to send direct. Maybe they mean the ability to send through ICQ's server. Or maybe AOL is going to add an "attach mp3" to replace "attach file" in the ICQ client and the usage will go way up.

Is the majority of PC's bought in the world for home or business? I would guess about 50/50. So if I work for a company and they have a choice between an Athlon 800 for $50 and the 1800 which is 4x times the price it is probably in the companies best interest to pay the extra $150 because it causes Excel to draw graphs 3 seconds quicker (or whatever). If you pay your Dilbert 30$/hour; 3 seconds can add up. Plus it helps morale.

It might encourage more bloated software, but companies don't have the source to fix Excel, they can spend a few extra $$$ and make it run quicker though.

The system transmits data of two polarization channels with 40Gbit/s each, i.e., together 80Gb/s bit per second, over a 212km long optical fiber - much further than otherwise possible.

This is kind of an intresting experiemnt, but this is not news. The "otherwise possibe" part makes it sound like no one has done PMD compensation before, this is false. Here is why:

    1. PMD compensators are being built by many research groups. You still can't call up an order one (AFAIK), but soon.
    2. PMD (mean DGD, differential group delay). DGD changes with time and wavelength.
    3. PMD on buried fiber varies slowly. It is easy to compensate.
    4. Nortel, Alcatel and others with be releasing 40 GB/s (per WAVELENGTH) systems next year. They are suppose to run 100's of km, between regens and at many wavelengths (160?).

Here is a link with almost all peer reviewed papers on PMD:

Here one can see many references to PMD compensation and even some at bit rates of 160 GB/s. With PMD compensation the line speed isn't that important, it is the accuracy and speed of your compensation.

Some of us drive quite a bit and need more music than can fit on a CD. 640 megabytes: thats about 20 songs at decent sounding bit rate.

I'm sure you are aware that if you do a search on napster, etc. Most of the songs with be 128kpbs and the better quality ones are 160-192.

This means that the majority of people find this type of bit rate acceptable to listen too.

For instance the new Weezer albulm at 192kpbs takes up 41 megs.
So I could store this 16 times over on a CDR. This is a relatively short cd (less than 40 minutes I believe, 10 songs).

Putting only 20 mp3's on a CDR is basically utter BS, that is why this is flaimbait! But I am sure you already knew that.
