I just looked at that site. Granted, I did not look at every state listing in detail, but the offices held by Libertarians that I saw were things like library board of trustees, police commissioner, school board, elections inspector and zoning board. None of these are real policy making positions, nor do they have any real chance for advancement into higher levels of politics. If third parties really want to become real players in the political scene, they need to at least have their people in positions like county board and preferably more important ones like state assembly (I actually voted for the Green party county board candidate and the Socialist state assembly candidate this morning). You might even be able to win a Congressional seat in the right area! The only thing it does to have a 3rd party candidate running for senator or president is to draw attention to your existence, and it's not always in a good way.

"A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

Do we have a "well regulated militia"? Can you argue that it is it even necessary, or that it would help ensure a free state? Look what happens every time some group within the US gets infantry grade weapons and tries to resist giving them up. The SWAT team/FBI/ATF/National Guard shows up with overwhelming force and that's the end of it. In the modern world, real military gear is so expensive and requires so much training to truely use effectively that no militia made up of amateurs would stand a chance at "securing a free state" if it came to that.

BTW, going with a stritly literal interpretation, you would not be allowed to infringe on the right of:

    children,

people on airplanes or in other weapons-free locations (at least not by law),

people convicted of violent crimes, and

people who are actually in prison
to bear arms. Nor would you be allowed to do such things as background checks before handgun purchases (I have no idea what your view on this last one is though). If you're willing to allow interpretation of the law to restrict access to those people, then it's hypocritical to not allow other interpretations.

  9. Another Option on Advice On Notebook Backpacks? · · Score: 1

I have a bag from Eagle Creek. It's not a backpack, but it will fit inside any normal backpack easily. It's well padded (I've dropped it with the laptop inside without a problem), and it has a pocket on the outside for whatever accessories you want to bring with you. It's also got rings on either side of the bag which allow you to attach a strap using clips. They don't actually make my model anymore (or at least I can't find it), but they have some similar things.

My advice would be to go with something like this, since most laptop backpacks I've seen are basically a regular backpack with an object similar (but inferior) to this inside, and tend to have a lot less room in them than a good regular backpack. This way, you've got something more independent of the backpack too, so if you want to just take the laptop around at some point, you can do that more easily than you would be able to if you had a complete laptop backpack setup.

I agree with your argument in general, but I disagree with your last point there. The problem is that a WRT54G is really cheap. A quick froogle search found me several sites selling those things for about $50. That's less than a reasonable hard disk or even a well ventilated case. If it breaks, you just get another one! The expensive part of this solution if you had to replace something that broke would be 1) the time investment involved in fixing it and 2) the big CF card or microdrive you'd need to get if that broke.

My point wasn't that student athletes get perks, but rather that for those students who aren't going to be on varsity athletics teams, making their choice of school based on the "perks" (like wifi, internet 2, ipods, etc) that a given university gives to all its students makes more sense than how good that school's athletics program is. Sorry if that was unclear.

As for your point about getting less education, they have their choice of what classes to take. If they choose to take "rocks for jocks" classes rather than the real ones, that's their choice. And if they would not have passed their classes had they not been waved through, then having a watered down education is no worse for them than having failed out.

And with regard to them "giving away" some of their best playing years, the two main professional sports in the US that recruit from colleges (basketball and football) rarely take players who haven't played on college teams. There are exceptions, but they're not really wasting their time if they couldn't be playing professionally anyway. And for those on scholarships, they're not really giving their time away in any case, since they're getting thousands of dollars in free tuition and housing. Whether or not they're getting a worthwhile education is the subject of my first point.

  16. Athletics? on The Changing Face Of Campus Tech · · Score: 4, Interesting
Are we seeing the day when college students make their school of choice not based solely on academics or athletics, but also on tech freebies like these?

For those students who aren't on an athletic team, how are the athletics at a school any different from "perks" like internet access? I would actually argue that the ability for students to get work done more easily (like on laptops on a lawn on a nice day) should be more important for students considering where to go than the possibilty of the school's football team to go to a bowl game.
