  1. Re: Coincidence I read about this last night on American Cheese Surplus Reaches Record High · · Score: 1

Tried Hershey's and Reese's and both have a kind of soapy taste to them. Can't say I noticed the vomit but soap was bad enough! It would make the Swiss cry to see what is named chocolate these days!

  2. Unsure if the jury is still out on whether soy affects hormone levels? Certainly soy protein for male weight training is still considered a massive no-no.

  3. Priorities man on Ask Slashdot: Which Laptop Should I Buy For My First Employee? · · Score: 1

You have literally two people to worry about in your company and the question you ask is about hardware? The hardware should not dictate your business you tight git! Just buy a decent machine that fits your future direction with regard to software... eg Skype, docx format, SQL... even OneDrive or the Google equivalent as it sounds like cashflow is limited. If all they need is a dumb terminal feel free to spend $200 on a Chromebook.

  4. If you are spending five hours a day on social media you are either depressed or have some other psychological condition! What's wrong with hanging around the shopping centre and spitting?!

  5. It's also fascinating* to note that certain gut bacteria can influence the mood of the host and that there are taste buds buried deep in the digestive system, although my favourite is toxoplasmosis, which will literally lead mice to their doom in order to reproduce. *YMMV!

  6. The article mentions the UK because the full-English breakfast (containing bacon) is one of the things that makes living on a cold, damp island enjoyable :)

Just got an update on this - apparently you need to make sure that your robotic loved one does not, I repeat not, end up buried in a pet cemetery.

If Hollywood has taught me anything, it is that bringing the dead back to life is a very bad idea!

It doesn't look like a corpse, it just looks odd. I can't imagine being comforted by the reanimated not-quite-identical likeness of a loved one!

The 'G' word: Growth. That one really grinds my gears. Why is everything about growth? Ok, great, a little growing is good for us but on a planet with finite resources a bit of perspective would be useful.

So you're saying that all we have to do is introduce AI of the opposite sex, with the promise of special cuddles, and our target AI will become measurably smarter?

  12. Drinkable water. From a tap! on Plastic Water Bottles, Which Enabled a Drinks Boom, Now Threaten a Crisis (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

My little country has extremely high-quality tap water, yet some numpties opt to pay through the nose for bottled. It boggles the mind it really does. But what is Evian in reverse?

One of my pet hates is street food sold in restaurants! Why?! It's not even eaten in the street, let alone cooked there! The whole point is to eat cheap, tasty food in an interesting atmosphere - you usually get one of those three at most.

There are completion stats somewhere... I recall that MOOCs have a tiny completion rate generally but that probably means the objective is to get somewhat better at a subject or study a specific part, rather than obtain a degree level of understanding.

Will be interesting to see what happens when computing power is sufficiently powerful to both break encryption and possibly to match abuse photos to their owners. A lot of traffic is already recorded, it just can't be read currently. In 10 years, when authorities have a clear record of CP being transmitted/received, will there be a lot of doors being knocked down?

  19. Good shout AC, Sandboxie is the same product, with almost the same name.

  20. As a resident of the UK I know full well the awful mismanagement and short-sightedness of government. Any small surplus in the balance sheet is immediately used for tax break bribes to win the next election, as just one example. Would help if politicians looked beyond the next election when planning.

  21. Geocities and Tripod and others on We Should Replace Facebook With Personal Websites (vice.com) · · Score: 1

Is this a rant about the phenomenon of 'luck' in tech? Tech is often a winner-takes-all scenario, and particularly with social media it seems... who wants to start using a social network that has none of your friends or acquaintances! Anyway, comparing your endeavours to Facebook is ignoring the countless other people who also had personal websites, even in the nineties! I mention Geocities and Tripod and that probably shows my age fairly accurately... Facebook was just in the right place at the right time, as is often the way with creative projects.
