  1. The critically panned Magic Leap... what sort of wealthy and unaccountable idiot would put their money into a risky venture like this? Ah yes, the military of course.

  2. We're all screwed on AI Could Devastate the Developing World (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

The only people to do well are the AI owners but what makes you think things will get that far? People won't sit idly as jobs disappear.

  3. Apart from working classes on Wharton Professor Says America Should Shorten the Work Day By 2 Hours (cnbc.com) · · Score: 1

The people who need shorter days, ie the ones whose bodies wear out, are the ones who will keep doing six day weeks. A lot of us, even surgeons, would certainly not do more in 75% of the time!

  4. Re: Too bad early 3D paged poorly on Sony Announces PlayStation Classic, a $100 Mini PS1 (polygon.com) · · Score: 1

Mid-90s a dark period? Most of the iconic games were made in that period!

  5. Software is gradually replacing human knowledge - eg a driver with GPS has a measurably smaller area of the brain than a map-reader. This is even more true in business, where a person is more likely to be a 'computer operator' than actually have a grasp of the fundamental principles. Is there any point knowing something deeply when a two minute Google will yield the same answer?!

  6. Re: Research like this is why software is crap on Research Proving People Don't RTFM, Resent 'Over-Featured' Products, Wins Ig Nobel Prize (improbable.com) · · Score: 1

I would broadly agree with this comment but using Apple products after years of Windows/Dos really blew my mind! Sometimes things should 'just work' - even though a masochistic mindset is a badge of honour in IT.

  7. Most clever people delay having kids! on 58% of Silicon Valley Tech Workers Delayed Having Kids Because of Housing Costs (chicagotribune.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

Seen the film Idiocracy? Thing is, when you're smart you start to look at implications of decisions. By any measure, having kids is not a solid investment and will likely impact your career and life choices considerably... if you're going to do it you may as well wait until career is off the ground and enjoyed some travelling, partying, multiple partners... If you're not smart you have kids in your teens and let someone else pay for it.

  8. Yep, it sucks! on Does LinkedIn Suck? (techcrunch.com) · · Score: 1

Not sure of the quality of the submission but I agree with the premise! It's a social network but lacking the social side as far as I can tell. Maybe I'm just not using it right but I have no idea how people would... It seems to be useful only for recruitment agencies who get access to profiles that are not just stuffed with keywords but might even have endorsements from peers as well. So yeah, I'm using it wrong because I'm not constantly marketing myself and networking!

  9. Four is a lot! on Why Can't More Than Four People Have a Conversation at Once? (qz.com) · · Score: 1

As a somewhat introverted person I notice that four is about the number of participants whereby a conversation starts to turn into a queue of people waiting to chip in an anecdote rather than having a genuine back-and-forth discussion. I'd go with three as the ideal, for anything!

  10. The most memorable use in film for me is The Running Man, where an autocracy implementing barbaric (and corrupt) punishments attempts to create footage showing our hero meeting his end. For a slice of 80's schlock it's actually a pretty decent guess at the future!

  11. Nano particles on Road Makers Turn To Recycled Plastic For Tougher Surfaces (economist.com) · · Score: 1

  17. Govts miss that tax money on FDA Chief Considers Ban of All Flavored E-Cigarettes (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

All those lovely tax dollars rolling in and the wonderful side effect of mainly poorer people dying earlier, before they become a burden on the state! No wonder govts have never banned cigarettes!

  18. A phone call takes more time and more effort than a text. It would be impossible to have contact with a wide group without some sort of asynchronous communication. Plus people rarely have downtime now - they are constantly doing stuff, even if that is Netflix.

  19. At least Hockey is a fun team sport that brings entertainment. Having a meaningful success will mean a lot in 30 years... more than most of our futile lives!

  20. I have literally tens of IG followers and I know the pressure of keeping those likes flowing. One of my kids was consistently getting low ratings on Instagram so I was forced to drop his content, in favour of one of his siblings.

  21. Cut off the EU from Google. As though anybody wants to see French cinema anyway!
