  1. Proceed with caution on BitTorrent Embraces Streaming Torrents, Takes uTorrent Web Out of Beta (betanews.com) · · Score: 1

I would imagine you would only want to use streaming torrents if you live in a country where copyright infringement is legal - can't think of any countries off the top of my head!

  2. Easily manipulated on Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies Are Useless, The Economist Says (economist.com) · · Score: 1

It seems clear that prices are being manipulated by some of the bigger players. With mining concentrated in some dubious countries as well, expect this to continue

  4. Guess 'coding' is going to be about as respectable as secretarial positions in a few years then! Fortunately it is still a difficult subject and to be useful you actually need to be able to convert requirements into a solution - that is the difficult bit, not being a simple code monkey.

  5. Re: No shit! Procrastination is about traumata! Du on Procrastination Is More About Managing Emotions Than Time, Says Study (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

Sometimes the best approach is just to start - not with a solid goal of 'finish x' for example, but a less scary goal, like 'spend 25 straight minutes identifying all the tasks needed to complete x'. Helped me!

  6. Re: Procrastination isn't bad, failing to complete on Procrastination Is More About Managing Emotions Than Time, Says Study (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

The Coursera course 'Learning How To Learn' also makes this same point... with the added tip to tackle the most difficult problems first before the easy ones, before backing off the problem at the point where it gets frustrating and moving on - leaving the subconscious to trundle on with that problem. If you want a good short summary, Reddit comes through: https://www.reddit.com/r/GetMo...

  7. What's the main problem? Trolls having twisted fun? The borderline-insane who make death threats against women and minorities? Far right/left? I'd rather the extremists were out in the open, so that their ill-considered arguments could be shot down. If anyone crosses a line then they get the full force of the law or the site... same as they would in real life - call that censorship but I prefer the word 'responsibility'. As for trolls - I'd rather they were mucking about on the web than setting fire to bus-stops and shooting cats.

  8. The article basically states that humans are too stupid to understand complex algorithms... and robots probably say the same about human behaviour! Interestingly, most crashes of self-driven cars are down to old fashioned human error.

  9. Some projects lack broad range of skills on How Can We Fix The Broken Economics of Open Source? (medium.com) · · Score: 1

If there is any 'broken economics' it is that some disciplines appear to be more forthcoming and generous with time than others. For example, I see a lot of talented coders on projects but no evidence of Technical Writers, UX Designers or possibly Business Analysts... eg lots of volunteers for the cool bits but not so many for the boring stuff, like writing help guides! SoapUI is my favourite example of a project that has very useful free functionality and also comprehensive tutorials, guides etc - plus a commercial offering that gives a more enterprise-level product.

  10. First patent troll? He can't die soon enough.

  11. Is there any human invention that will not be used to mess up our planet?! Even effing space exploration, the most noble of pursuits, is descending into an extreme sport for bored billionaires.

  12. Sheldon became evil on 'The Big Bang Theory' Is Finally Ending (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

  13. Demo version on People Keep Trying To Scam Their Way Into Free Video Games (kotaku.com) · · Score: 1

When I was a broke kid I'd play demo versions and pay for the one that deserves my money. For a new game that costs 50 quid you're damn right I want to try before I buy!

  14. If an investment appears in the pages of tabloids then you'd better be shorting. No news here, just simple greed. Hope all the dealers on the darknets didn't get stung too badly, they were the only ones actually using it!

  15. Imagine being confident enough in your skills that you can be a massive jerk without worrying that you pissed off someone in (presumably) the same industry, who you may bump into and do business with at some point.

  16. No wonder the US is trying to legalise weed all over the place! If the people weren't so dulled on weed and Netflix, they might think about throwing off their shackles.

  17. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be on Slashdot Asks: Did You Have a Shared Family Computer Growing Up? (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

I can understand pining for a particular device but pining for the general crapness of not having a device each??!!! I was hoping there might at least be some 'sharing' in the sense of a shared experience, but no, each family member used it in isolation. At least families 'shared' a Nintendo - write about that ffs!

  18. Crows are not assholes? on Theme Park Deploys Trained Crows To Collect Litter (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

  25. If robots are doing all the important jobs, I don't think it matters whether people get paid to dig holes or paid to sit on their arses, it's pretty much the same degree of usefulness!
