  1. Really, half a billion sounds a lot until you realise it's only around the budget of two DC films... and at least this ship is unlikely to sink without trace!

  2. Class Central is useful on 190 Universities Launch 600 Free Online Courses · · Score: 2

Keeping track of thousands of MOOCs is tricky, and even trickier is finding the good ones. There are some half-assed courses on Udemy for example that are significantly worse than equivalent (but unstructured) offerings on YouTube.

  3. Cars are inefficient on Tech To Blame For Ever-Growing Car Repair Costs, AAA Says (cnet.com) · · Score: 1

I'm obviously not a 'car person' as all new cars look the same to me - identical bulges, curves and massive footprints that make parking a nightmare.

  4. A naked prepubescent girl is clearly going to be censored by Facebook, according to their rules. You want grey areas for a service you don't even pay for?!

  5. Re: The New York Times is not a credible news sour on China, Russia Are Listening To Trump's Phone Calls, Says NYT Report (thehill.com) · · Score: 1

I'm unclear what else Trump could be saying that isn't documented on Twitter? You mean he could be even more uncensored on a voice call? What a thought!

  6. Re: How about a ring instead? on Thousands of Swedes Are Inserting Microchips Under Their Skin (npr.org) · · Score: 1

In the UK a 'chipped ring' would sound like a painful injury!

The placebo effect is valid, so who cares as long as it works*? If you can give birth using essential oils I guess that's preferable to being another Oxy addict. *assuming the wife isn't neglecting vaccines etc

  8. Long term employees can become stuck in a rut and lose their motivation, especially if there are peaks and troughs of interesting work. On the upside they develop unrivalled domain knowledge on that business. Sometimes though you just need an experienced person who will do a solid 3 month stint, enthusiastically. They usually don't get involved in internal politics and will hopefully know their stuff - for a price.

  9. The govt should be broken up first. It has proven to be corrupt, inefficient and a poor steward of the environment.

  10. Has anyone asked UI designers? on Ask Slashdot: Should Open-Source Developer Teams Hire Professional UI/UX Designers? · · Score: 1

Has anyone actually asked for free consultation with a UX designer? They may just need to know how/when to get involved. In my experience though, developers always know exactly what the user should be doing, so therefore there is no need for a designer ;)

  11. Magic money tree on Silicon Valley's Saudi Arabia Problem (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

Nobody really questions where investment money comes from but surely even a 5 year old can join the dots - which ethical groups have millions of dollars to chuck around on 1000/1 bets?

  12. Douches all the way down on Are Universal Basic Incomes 'A Tool For Our Further Enslavement'? (medium.com) · · Score: 1

As I get older I realise there is no utopia for any society made up of actual people. A significant minority will want to enslave the rest, another significant minority will want to do jack shit all day. Maybe 5% will actually do remarkable things but the rest of us are just passing time!

  13. Surely 'SITH' would be more apt for the US military?

  14. That family has an incredibly poor record in the UK. I would venture to say that his corporate strategy is 'Be Evil'.

  15. Re: You're building it for that fat six-figure pay on Tech Workers Now Want to Know: What Are We Building This For? (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

Hey it's fine if you atone by retiring at 35 to do some bullshit charity work, in between yoga classes and wheatgrass smoothies!

  17. Climate change on Scientists Are Working To Eliminate Senescent Cells (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

How ironic if we were to eliminate ageing just as the planet decides to rid itself of us irritating little ticks.

  18. Open source on Microsoft Open Sources Parts of Minecraft's Java Code (kotaku.com.au) · · Score: 1

Would have been even better to open source the whole thing! The Pi edition is obviously welcome but is so old as to be off-putting for young coders. It would be like offering a free version of FIFA soccer that only has goalkeepers.

  19. Really sorry to hear how this ended, although I'm sure this isn't the end. Having a cool dream take off and snowball into a huge commitment sounds like a nightmare situation but this isn't the worst that could have happened.

  20. We adapt on Researchers Create 'Sans Forgetica,' a Memory-Boosting Font (cnn.com) · · Score: 1

The Qwerty layout was conceived to slow down typists in the days when hardware was more delicate. Now it's difficult to imagine that it was used to slow people down, because we all grew up on it and learnt it. Same with a new font. We'll get used to it and the benefits will wear off.

  21. I'm sure Tim has thought this through but what happens when Solid is compromised?

  22. Taught in schools on Python is a Hit With Hackers, Report Finds (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

I imagine Python is also a hit with people trying to do useful things as well, particularly things involving Raspberry Pi and automation - it's been taught in schools for the last few years as well. Nice try educators though, trying to make coding more 'cool' by writing this article!

  23. Waiting for prices to fall before pushing solar energy, as he inevitably will!

You seem to be under the misapprehension that Sky is British? We always regarded it as Australian, as it's owned by Rupert! Comcast is equally evil I understand so let's see how this plays out.
