The TV is probably on around 6 hours a day (whether we are actively watching TV/playing video games or it's just on as passive background noise) and in my opinion, it still looks as good as it did the day I bought it. The only negative thing I have to say about my TV is that it only goes up to 1080i since I was an early adopter.

Ok, this was hilarious :) I was kind of rolling my eyes at that post, too.

I'm all for an effort towards standardizing the PC gaming platform experience. I don't care who does it, whether it's Microsoft, Valve, id, or some new player in the market. I will say that the emerging market of casual gamers would much rather pick up a DVD-sized case that has a familiar branding on it and system requirements in the same freaking place. We already do see a movement to this to a degree. Remember those huge college-text-book sized game boxes that held a few CDs and a pocket-sized manual? They are gone for the now smaller-sized one, and in some cases, yes a DVD-sized version that says PC-CD or whatever on it.

There's something to be said about how far compatibility, installers, and graphics-standards have come in the PC Gaming area. It used to be worse! Remember before InstallShields and DirectX? I'm sure somebody will retort "Hurr, yeah games were fun M$ sucks", but I think it's gotten a lot better overall. I'm glad that Microsoft has (yes, strategically) put some real momentum towards making it easier on people.

Either way, at least we don't need a boot disk anymore.

  12. The closest thing to high-brow... on Why Are There No Highbrow Video Games? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The closest thing to high-brow for video games that you are going to get will be things like Silent Hill, Shadows of the Collosus, ICO, Killer 7, and maybe something like Siren.

I don't think any of these games or type of these games will ever generate as much revenue as Madden Roster Change 2008 or the like.

I'd love to have a *GOOD* mystery game or something that challenges my brain rather than my dexterity. Nostalgia aside, the text adventures (sans terrible text parsing) is a good example in my opinion. Hell, put a GUI on it but figure out a way to give that great problem-solving feeling to it.

Perhaps seasoned isn't the right word to use, but I've played the game since it was in a cabinet and nearly every version on various home consoles. My point was I've played the game a long time and understand the mechanics, priorities, and timing of the characters and moves. I'm not a frame-counter or a superfreak at the game, but I'd rate myself well above average player. You're right, I'm not all into the top-tier freak-a-thon, but those sort of people should know better in the first place that playing a 2-D fighter ONLINE is not going to deliver.

Playing "at this level" is not the target market, I hate to tell you. There are only so many Daigos out there, but the network connectivity for the remaining 99.9% of the fans should be perfectly acceptable.

If your definition of "seasoned" is reserved for the top-tier minority players only, then I have entirely misused your word and apologize profusely.

I played this game on my lunch break yesterday (Wed, the release day) with absolutely no lag, and I'm a pretty seasoned SF2 player. I would have noticed lag. 5 hours later during dinnertime, I played again for about 2 hours online with absolutely no lag against other people.

I had a great time. My only complaint was joining a custom match because by the time the results hit the screen, the player was usually unavailable (i.e. started a match). I just wanted to chime in and say that the lag is subjective, and on yesterday where I expected lag to be the worst, I experienced none at all.

I consider it worth the investment. It sure is small considering how many quarters I was pumping into it as a teenager at the bowling alley every day...

  22. Re:Contradiction on PSP Firmware Update 2.8 Available · · Score: 1

Agreed. I do not understand all the unwarranted animosity that is thrown towards Sony with regards to the firmware issue. (There ARE plenty of other reasons however) From a business standpoint, it makes sense for them to prevent unlicensed/unsigned programs to run on their hardware. This would take away from royalties and QA guidelines and checklists that have to be gone through before a game is allowed to be released. Also from a piracy standpoint it makes sense for Sony to want them locked down. Let's also not forget that it does protect the unwitting consumer from malicious code that can and has bricked PSPs by putting corrupt firmware in place.

Do I use homebrew? Yes, I do. I downgraded from 2.0 to 1.5 and use mine as a SNES/NES/Genesis handheld emulator. This is why I bought the PSP. I do think that the firmware upgrades are reactionary to breakthroughs in homebrew that circumvent safeguards that were in place.

Remember, we who use homebrew are a very, very small portion of their target userbase. Most people could care less about homebrew and probably don't even know what an emulator is. They are happy playing Madden of NBA Street Jamz or whatever while they are taking the subway.
