In order to sign to a major label, you sign away your soul. Large labels sell 80% of music, they pay out 8-15% of profits (minus advances), and they usually own your music. If your band fails, they try to collect money from you. Small labels treat you much better, but you don't go as far.

That doesn't happen with mechanics, so why should it happen to computer technicians?

I was a junior greasemonkey for about a year at a shop with a good reputation. The owner of that shop did a lot of horrible things that still haunt me even though I quit 3 years ago.

One of my ASE certifications is for manual transmissions. I don't trust myself to work on those (and sadly they're hardly used anymore), but I passed the test.

And with a dishonest mechanic, things aren't going to get any better. Shops that charge $500 to replace a valve cover (on a car from the 70s). It's a 2 minute job. We didn't do that, that's just a dishonest mechanic with ASE certification.

If the car is in a horrible area (used to repo in Hunters Point which is the ghetto in San Francisco), we can call up the cops and ask them to stand by. The new area I work isn't as bad as that, but you still go through some crappy neighborhoods. We try not to get the cops involved. You don't want to abuse the privilege.

It's just part time work for me, just for kicks. I'm a programmer, but sneaking around late at night stealing people's cars legally really gets the adrenaline flowing.

And to be more off topic, I used to repo lots of cars from failed dotcommers. It's about 60% poor people buying cars they shouldn't have, and 30% rich people who are lazy about paying their bills. I haven't figured out the other 10%.

The old timers talk about how great Christmas was to repo, but now the banks make us take a week off in the holiday season (at least in California). Early morning New Year's Day is good though.
