We had an xbox360 on an older analog set, I ported it over and fired up Halo3 and was really impressed. I could see detail in the game that I didn't know was there. As far as blueray vs. HD, I just bought the PS3 as the price was about the same as a decent BD player. Again, I was really impressed by the game graphics, Call of Duty is amazing in 1080p.
Final comments on blueray movies: yes, resolution is impressive, but hires does not make up for a poor movie; Spiderman3, I'm looking at you.
Downside is television,- a regular cable signal (we have Cox in san diego), looks really bad, almost unwatchable. I've ordered an HDTV antenna, and I'll see how that goes, but I don't want to pay for the increased cost of digital cable
1) Best Buy charges $250/service in home. That's a lot, and mom&pop types who would call them (vs. knowing enough to fix it themselves) have no clue that the tech is only getting a small fraction of that.
2) Best Buy aggressively promotes service contract at point of sale, so again, naive mom&pop types tend to fall for this because they fear the unknown and think of this as some sort of safe insurance.
bottom line, Best Buy is making tons of cash off of naive consumers,- same old story.
... Why do people pay so much for a device that doesn't perform its main function very well, is too big for a phone but not a very useable PDA because you can't get thirth party software on it, and ties them to a contract with a provider they would often not have chosen otherwise? Is Steve's reality distortion field really that good? My wife and I each have one, here's my quick rundown of why I think they're worth the money:
good: 1) safari 2) access to email 3) google maps 4) visual voicemail 5) ipod, phone, pda all in one 6) display, gestures in safari 7) pause/phone answer capability in headphones
okay 1) sound quality in phone 2) at&t coverage (at least in my area, so-cal) 3) edge (good enough for me)
bad 1) glass display tends to get face-schmutzed, always cleaning it 2) speaker volume for phone (even though movie sound is absolutely fine) 3) can't easily use phone in car (but to some this is probably a good thing, I'm just being honest here i'm guilty...)
overall, I'd give the phone pretty good marks, YMMV.
Why is it that airports have special significance?... If you really need this spelled out to you, she was in LOGAN airport, the location where suicide bombers boarded planes back on 9/11/2001; it was an incident here in the US that we take quite seriously.
If we implement policies to prevent global warming and it turns out we trigger a new ice age instead, then oh well. Life's a bitch that way. just like...
If we go to Iraq, and try to fight terrorism there so we don't fight it in the US; well if we screw it up even worse, then oh well, life's a bitch that way.
Look, the world is changing, just as it has always been changing. If our technology is causing this change to increase, we should think about it. But do not be so foolish as to think that we should use technology to change the changing!
Perhaps this has been explained elsewhere, but here seems as good a place as any for me to ask the question: How is Cingular/AT&T not being to be a disaster for Apple. Everyone I know who has had Cingular has been unhappy with their service. The majority end up switching to Verizon and become fairly satisfied.
I always felt Cingular made cell phone virtually unuseable. Has AT&T/Cingular massively improved their network in the past year? Is everyone going to end up thinking the iPhone is awful simply because their service is so bad? Am I missing something?
Thank you. I'm a current verizon customer and I can't stand them: here's why - I had a RAZR with 1st gen firmware, phone worked well, and I was able to use bluetooth to sync to my powerbook, transfer pix, and transfer mp3 ringtones. I had battery problem and brought the phone into verizon last Oct. they told me they would replace battery (was about $50) and that they would "upgrade" the firmware to improve battery life. Later, I found that bluetooth wouldn't work. I did some googling, and found out that the new firmware disabled bluetooth! I took back the phone, and I was told that they couldn't downgrade restore bluetooth. So there is verizon for you. Is AT&T worse? maybe, but I'll chance it.
One big problem would be health care tourism. People with expensive illnesses would be likely to move to a state with free/cheap universal health care. Depending on the system they could even just visit the state. No state will therefore be too free with it's system. It would be very easy to deal with this. Require a minimum residency status, say 2 years, to get full coverage.
No, this is like someone trying out a new type of front door lock, finding out that it is totally insecure, and publicising the fact that it is so that people can avoid using it. What you're suggesting is that it's better to keep quiet about it and let people get their stuff stolen. Your analogy is wrong.
Safari beta 3 windows, is not for sale, it is clearly labeled a beta. The responsible thing to do here, if a vulnerability is found, is to report it in such a manner such that the vulnerability can be fixed.
To do what this guy did was chickensh*t grandstanding.
I knew then it would be huge, and I bought apple stock at $14. I think that was around 2001. It took a couple of years for APPL to get some traction, but today is at $127.
Well, at least you practiced full disclosure and admitted your opinions are based on the fact that you own Apple stock and want people to keep buying Apple.... wrong, sold it a while ago.
... but in the end it's waaaaay the fuck too expensive. Original iPod was $399; I still have mine.
Yeah, it was way too expensive then, and I knew it. Thing was, it blew away my Rio Diamond; it also blew away the 6 CD changer in my lexus that I had spent $3K on.

Apple sees long term better than most tech companies today, in my opinion. The iPhone will take off just like the iPod did.
I'm a chemist, and I find the same "nano" rantings annoying.
Selling and advertising have polluted our thinking and our vocabulary. Too bad,- that for people to get exicted about this work, the scientists have to sell it as a promo tie-in to a movie.
They went to war because they thought they could win easily, and it would be a good idea. They were wrong, on a number of levels, but that doesn't mean they're happy about or moreover intended the current situation over there, and to imply anything else, like I said, is pretty ridiculous. totally wrong.
We are at war in Iraq because Iraq has oil, and is in a region with huge petroleum reserves. We need a stable platform to get to that oil THAT WE CONTROL.
The rest of the oversimplified morality/idealogy/anti-terrorisms expoused on this topic are bullsh*t.
1) apple doesn't make the HD in ipods - Toshiba does
annectdote:
2) my son put his ipod in the wash, I didn't find it until it had gone all the way through the spin cycle. The ipod was shot, needless to say. But out of curiosity, I put the HD into an enclosure I had, reformated it, and to my suprise, I got it reformated, and it's still working after about three years.
When I looked at this, the thought occurred to me that we have become the "pig-pen" of our solar system.
the cost is being a damn fine belt or wallet.
We just bought a 40 inch 1080p samsung.
What's most impressive so far? Game systems.

a lot of posts on hourly rates etc.
but people here are missing out on two facts:

Andrew: Innovation is a three-step process: 1. Generate an idea. 2. Commercialize it. 3. Realize the value.
this guy is a genius.
If only I had know it was this simple before, I have wasted my career...

That's why I was so highly regarded in public school, and I breezed right through college.

Part of what really set the movie apart is the great Vangelis soundtrack IMHO.

how does the moto Q do as far as syncing with a macbook pro?
good post.
Wish i had mod points right now.
how come the brits say "go to hospital"
and the americans say "go to THE hospital"?
Why don't the brits use an article there?
