  6. Cool project, well done, but not new. on Taking Linux to New Heights · · Score: 5, Informative

HABET (High Altitude Balloon Experiments in Technology) is one organization that has been doing this for years (I believe there are many). About 4 years ago I helped on a project that used two cameras, one with color film and one infrared. The cameras were triggered based on GPS altitude data so we examine the resulting photos and determine the difference in atmospheric interference (the clouds and graininess you see in his pics) and potentially combine the data from the color and infrared film to eliminate the interference.

I don't know where the interference-correction went since I graduated and fled the state, but I do know that triggering the cameras based on GPS altitude worked because I wrote that portion of the PIC code. There's something very satisfying about lifting a payload a few feet into the air and hearing the cameras go *click* when you reach an altitude threshold. Kudos to this guy for making so many pieces come together.

Hehe, but code/comments like this can bite you in the ass too. I remember a developer who was told to add a big red button into a game for kids. For some reason, I believe as a joke, he put in a *huge* red button labeled "BIG FUCKING RED BUTTON".

Well, the file got propogated to other trees before he could "correct" the button, and during pre-release testing a volunteer was playing the game and lo! the button pops up. :) Too bad it was an adult testing and not a little kid, because that would have been really funny.

Seriously, what user is going type "Ok, it's about dogs, and dalmations in particular, also pet care and grooming and diet and exercise and training..." for every file he creates? No way.

    More likely:
    find . -type f | xargs egrep -i "dalmation"

Of course that won't work on binary formats, but guess what could? A more intelligent search engine. Hey, I think there are a few of those available!

I don't think voice recognition is going to take off much at all, not for the general consumer. I don't thing many people want to spend 8 hours a day talking at their computer (or handheld, as the case may be). I imagine it'd leave you pretty hoarse unless the technology got to the point where you could quietly mumble or subvocalize. There is also a certain amount of privacy that comes with a "quiet" input device... you can hack away at the Linux kernel or type a naughty fantasy to your girlfriend and nobody knows the difference unless they look at your screen. Now imagine speaking each of them at work. ;)

Frankly I don't want the din of dozens of coworkers talking at their computers around me. I'll stick with my qwerty keyboard. And this means those with physical disabilities will be condemned to a corner of the market, getting less attention and as a result more expensive and less quality products.
