    it is easy to get lost in the ambiguous nature of the project's goal. put that aside for a minute. think about all of the advanced in communication and antenna theory, receiver design, and other technologies that will need to be developed in order to reach the ends of the project. while unearthing the big bang may not provide you with a tremendous amount of excitement; maybe you will sleep a little easier knowing that all of the technology advancements that go into research like this can/will be applied to other more practical areas of our lives.

    many of the advances in technology that influence our lives today were unintended consequences of other research.

    ignoring the obvious chipset arguement that seems to arise. could another posibility be that amd wishes to improve its floating point design? i mean, gpu's are essentially just huge application specific floating point units. i dont really have enough information or understanding of the extent of amd's current designs to know, but it would seem they could gain a lot of ip in that area.

    people often bitch about microsoft and their business prctices. now maybe i am not completely informed; but what did they do that is so morally reprehensible? did they encourage sweatshops like nike? did they try to get millions of children hooked on cigaretts like phillip morris? as far as i can tell they just manipulated a market...but did anybody suffer as a result? honestly, they do a lot of great and interesting research...the knee jerk reactions to them are getting old.

    if the gates foundation helps to make the world a better place does it really matter that windows millenium was a piece of crap?

    i cant say i have ever seen something like this...but it appears that they it is a very clever microwave structure that uses self inductance to help keep the losses of the energy storage device at a minimum thus requiring far less power than seen in typical designs like LC tank oscillators...it is interesting how most people here are saying bullshit soo quickly.

    Is it really ILM's fault? My understanding is that they are just there to supply the studios with special effects. I mean, shouldn't we be placing the blame on studios and the general public for creating and paying for movies that are crap? I mean, ILM just seems like a bunch of folks that make shit look cool when requested to... ...I do agree with you on the lack of quality...but come on, if I could make a living rendering fun stuff I would too, and it seems that is all ILM is doing. Meh, but, I could be wrong about their place in the movie making machine.

    I completely agree with you...but remember, it has been know since the advent of fire that hot liquids can burn your skin on contact...yet that one woman/moron was able to take mcdonalds for a nice little ride. I hope I'm wrong but it would seem that this case parallels the mcdonalds "hot coffee" case in terms of libal vs. obviousness.

    just remmeber, the net, as it was designed, was meant to be an information sharing research tool. while my opinion may not be widely agreed upon, had the net, even back when it was first conceived, been left up to the commercial entities of the day, it would not differ much from one developed today (ingoring technological advances and only looking from the economic tool vantage point).

    i fail to believe that the corporations back in the day were less greedy than the ones we see now. technology has changed, and shares of certain markets has changed, but the knee jerk reactions to loss of profits and helplessness to emerging technologies proabably would not have changed much.

    the net as it is now, emerged successfull becuse business underestimated it; they sat back and "let the geeks have their little research toy." for a net to succeed along the lines that the current one has, the implications of its usefullness would have to streach beyond the ablity of coropration leaders comprehension. this is entirely possible since most people who are smart enough to innovate in that way are often marginalized by businessmen becuase of their uniqueness and variance from that of the status-quo business man (which is a major problem with modern american culture, but alas...thats not for this post).

    more of a ramble...but whatever...

    spot on. having been a university product of the late 90's early 00's i was, unfortunately, one of the many who landed a unbelievably sweet job right out of college. the major difference between myself and this asshat is that i knew that i had an incredible job, and i was greateful for it. the problem arose when i was laid off...we designed telecom chips for optical networks, so the company's revenue dropped sharply and my entire group was let go. i spent the better part of a year trying to secure a position that could live up to my previous one...well...unfortunately, it took me some time to realize that for my age and experience, there was no place for me to go but down from there. it was a hard pill to take at the time, but i have gained much more perspective from the whole situation. i will have a good job like that again, but this time, i reaize that i'm going to have to put in a little more time first...and i'm ok with that...because now, i understand that my degree is not an entitlemet to the "good life"

    as a side, we all worked in cubicles, includig some of the smartest phd level engineers i've ever known outside of school...not being isolated from eachother sparked more creativity than it stifled; we were able to discuss problems as they arose and help people come to quicker solutions by discussing them and allowing people to "jump in" and contribute. i was the only person in that department without a masters degree...i learned a shitload from those people, more in 1 year than 3 at my universtity. that, is what i miss the most.

    its not a big deal that people dont know how a lot of things they use work...what troubles me, is why so many younger kids are not interested in asking why.

    i've always been the type of person who has to understand how something does what it does, even if i'm not capable of fully understanding, i still like to ask...so it really gets me when i meet or see people who aren't the least bit interested in discussing how something might work. it seems that if you show any interest in something like that kids tend to want to say "who cares" or "stop being such a geek".

    maybe i would feel different about kids curiosity towards tech if i had more exposure to them. but alas, i've probably just lost perspecitve.

    i've discovered a new way to deal with the few that get through. Like yourself, I used to get furious with unsolicited callers. Now, I simply take my cordless phone into my living room, pick the first random object that I find, and try as hard as I can to sell it to the person who is calling...until they hang up on me.

    yes, it wastes time, but it is incredibly fun.

    Even more, when the young hackers and spammers in China realise that they are being opressed, they will try to get out, and I'm sure they'll open up a lot. It's impossible to regulate so many people on something as free as the internet.

    Maybe they dont have to regualte everything, for centuries, huge populations of people have been self regulated by fear alone. Make an extreme example out of a few, and many people will not act out of fear alone.

    I can't believe I'm replying to an AC but here we go...

    I always find it amusing how American's call us British people "reserved", yet they freak out at a nipple on TV, or, gasp, a few "naked" people showing nothing but a bit of skin and hugging each other.

    Then again, I've seen some American TV, and it's awful. "Reserved" isn't the word for us Britons, it's "not making a tit out of ourselves" that is. :p

    (I'm not painting all American's with the same brush here, btw. I'm already OT so getting modded troll as well...)


    If you bothered to notice his concession at the end of his post it would become painfully obvious that he was not stereotyping every American, just the ones that give us a bad name; they are numerous.

    Your decision to selectively quote and reply to a portion of the post will only help to further any stereotypes that have already been made. However, you have proven yourself worthy of a job at FOX news.

    this is rampant oversimplification, but my gut feeling is that as long as we have books...we have a way of passing things on. honesly, we may find a solid way of arching digital data and find a medium capable of surviving, and moreover a way of allowing future generations to pass it on...but, it seems to me that books, may very well be the first and last way of us passing knowledge between era's.

    i think we should keep digital archives around for future generations to access and reverse engineer, but it also seems that we should create a technological bible of sorts, that outlines, not in extreme detail, some of the most important mathmatical and scientific principles that we base our current technology on. that way, if our keys do not always pass on, at least a snapshot of our thinking and design paradigms will.

    these are pseudo-intellectual ramlings at best. i could have just said "books are the way to go."

    i'm a michigan resident in my late 20's...when i buy booze its i usually get carded 50% of the time. i remember when i purchased doom 3 last year, the chick who rang me up asked me for my id, and not a year before that, some kid carded me when i wanted to buy tickets to a rated r movie.

    is it just me, or is the fact that its easier to buy booze than it is for me to watch a show or play a game really illustrate just how fucked and buracratic we've become.

    no matter how many times this question gets asked...the answer is always the same; if what you care about is remaining in academia(sp?) and/or doing pure research then getting a cs degree and an advanced cs degree are all you may need (and as a result you'll probably end up getting the better part of a undergrad math degree racked up along the way).

    but, if you wish to join the corperate world of working monkeys; you really need to supplement your education either with a business or engineering minor or second major of some kind.

    i'm sure this will sound like every other post that has come before me...so i'm just adding to the mess.

    It doesn't, therefore you don't have as many security threats for other software as most of the people developing Linux probably sit at night writing up malicious code for windows!

    I am neither "pro" nor "anti-mircrosoft"; I'm "pro-whatever-tool-gets-the-job-done." But, crap like this really is horrible; I would honestly like to believe that most Linux developers are sitting up at night developing Linux...I mean, hell, few are actually lucky enought to make money doing that during the day...most people have to work to support their hobbies.
