Why does everyone and their dog suddenly think RFID is the new sliced bread? Just because its new and it does something semi cool doesnt mean its suitable for every application. With this for example its totally unsuitable! Not only is your fucking credit card number or its alternative availiable for anyone in range to scan, but now you have a bloody tracking device attached to you hand. Where-ever you go and what ever you do, if your in range of a scanner then someones got you and yes they will pretty quickly tie that innocent number to your name - "hey bob, can you help me with this box" - afew seconds later bob's hand has been scanned from inside the box and his number is sold on the black market tied to his name and address. This is the stupidest thing ive seen in years, at the very least it must be controllable so you can disable it at will.
No no you got me all wrong, i wasnt in any way saying that Microsofts' server software could actually handle high capacity mission-critical business applications, thats just one of the areas they have a go in. (I think windows vs unix webserver uptime is roughly 1:100)
For several months now ive actually started to get a phobia of cash machines. Every time im using one im scared that maybe it will process my transaction, but crash before it deals out the money, so i never take out large amounts. Ive seen several crashed ATM's or those with some other windows message it really pisses me off, but theres no point going into the bank and complaining because they have nothing to do with it and wont even know what your talking about. In fact one customer complaining means jack to them at any level. I don't even understand why an ATM would be on a network that was open like that, let alone why ANY ATM would need to run windows XP. Let me re iterate that: the machine has pretty much 2 functions: 1 give you cash, 2 give you a receipt. Just like voting machines they have totally over complicated it for no apparent reason, it doesn't even need multi tasking thats how simple it is. The fact is unquestionable and i challenge anyone to dispute this: Diebold are incompetent.
Sounds good, i have an old rio 500 and it seems good but ive had problems with it corrupting the firmware and needing a recovery and also some files just wont go through usb - it disconnects, i have no idea why, its always the same files and its nothing to do with them being corrupt (it takes any file) and no firmware has fixed it, maybe its just my comp. All in all the rest of the 500 has no problems.
FFS why cant Microsoft just go with W3C standards? as a web developer thats all i ask. The number of times I've screamed because they don't support some basic standard or do it with bugs its starting to make me go insane! I buy 3 keyboards because i go through several a year when i pick them up and smash them across my desk at MS stupidity.
All i want is HTML and CSS implemented so i can actually use it the way it was intended, it can do some amazing things and you can come up with great ways of representing and displaying things, but then MS comes along and says "yeah we design multi-threading server solutions for high capacity mission-critical business applications but no we cant handle the implementation of drawing a fucking box on the screen without screwing it up somehow" or they just don't support it at all which brings me to the next point:
Its pretty safe to say that for most mainstream sites IE is by far the most popular browser, and in some ways the standards have missed things (that SVG will fix) for example rounded/shaped corners with CSS can only be done with a hack, so if IE had a special way you could just about compromise and use it, and other browsers would just get pointy corners or you could give them different content, fine. But Microsoft doesn't even come up with useful diversions to the standards they just come up with bug-ridden pointlessness.
MS IE as pretty much shaped the web (and still does) as we know it, its a real pity that its such a crap feature-less browser that has nothing to do with standards and the philosophy behind them. Its similar to how Outlook brought us the VB script virus single handed, and singled handed also represents what Microsoft are!
Some presenters are really just auto-cue readers but there are some that grow on everyone and become famous personalities. These people dont have to worry about their jobs. The same seems to go for singers/groups - there are some that sound so generic that theres no point to them, but some that stand out. Unfortunately (Kym Marsh) they all have pretty much the same level of ego.
If he had the original material that could be pretty easy (just get the the master that doesnt have captions on it) but otherwise does he just blur it out? I dunno about $50000, some of the ads i see on tv look like they were done with a camcorder on a street corner.. oh wait they were!
The RIAA and the music labels are totally redundant! what do they do for us? they quite literally manufacture music, and their by-product is arrogent celebrities who call themselves artists. For me atleast, the only reason that i listen to manufactured music is to forfill that itch in my head from hearing it somewhere else. I know the song is crap, i know that half the fake synthed instruments sound so bad its like listening to a midi file, i know the lyrics are going to contain the word baby atleast 15 times and i know that its a cover or has a stolen melody but i dont care because its just something i listen to because it sounds abit catchy. Do we really need an entire industry and all that hype to create these things? the internet does an amazing job of propogating memes like this. (just look how good kazaa is at distribution) the RIAA has no use, it needs to be taken out the back and shot like an old dog.
They actually call them GloFish(tm)! Ok im not going to go into why stringing two words together and capitalising them and abreviating glow into glo is really pretentious and annoying, but fucking trade marking an organism?!?!?! there are so many laws on what you can and cant do, you cant even research into potentially life saving stem cells, but you can trade mark organisms and dna/genomes???!?! the politicians better get off their fat, over paid (bribes) asses and get to work.
The RIAA know full well they wont loose a significant number of customers from lawsuit publicity. Most people will think "oh well that little filesharing scam is over i guess i will just have to go back to buying CDs i dont want to get sued" How many will be botherd enough to boycot the RIAA? People just behave like little school kids and will listen to the teacher (RIAA) and try and fit in with the system.
Also a whole bunch of people on life support would die. All but the most basic medical care would be gone and ambulances would be imobilised. Radios/phones would be down so there would be no way to get help. The water supply would probably die off and there would be a mass shortage of food with no freezers or delivery infrastructure. Roads would be gridlocked with immobilised cars and people in underground trains would be stranded. Lifts would get stuck, people would light candles at night to see and cause lots of extra fires - and you can forget about the fire service, they wouldnt be able to cope with rescuing all these people even if they did have vehicles and radios. There would be mass looting and gang rule and nobody would know what was going on because of the lack of any radio/tv/phones/newspapers.
Well i guess its a step up from dropping atomic bombs on civilians..
The iraq incident where a convoy (of americans and kurds) that john simpson was in was bombed by a US jet and the cameraman had to wipe his blood off the lens comes to mind. The pilot got a bollocking for not doing the job properly (they were still alive) but with this technology they could just destroy the cameras from a mile away.
Now when you see all those hundereds of CRTs in old sci-fi shows you'll know whey - some time in 2040 they started recycling 50 year old monitors and using them in space ships.
You cant trust anything connecting a microphone to a transmitter unless it has a physical privacy switch. Most web-cams have little shutters because no fool is going to trust that something in windows or macromedia flash 6 hasnt turned on your camera and if you have a microphone it can probably be unplugged. Your mobile phone has no switch and theres nothing to say you couldnt install a simple app on a modern phone that made the screen "look" like it was on standby when really it was transmitting voice (and they can pick up allot of sound), same goes with allot of laptops with wifi etc. Its a simple privacy precaution and it may seem paranoid or anal but ill bet allot of people will be caught out by things like this - Britney and Bush have famously been caught out by open mics slagging people off but it will start happening on consumer gadgets.
Most new phones nowdays can have new software installed - they are basically becoming PDAs that just happen to have a certain type of wireless port so isnt it entirely feasable that soon you could just download an encryption app onto your phone and then your talking securely for free:) Im sure certain people will make it their prime job to stop mobile manufacturers from allowing API access to the mobile functionality of the phone to stop this but im sure people will tell them where to stick it. With bluetooth and cameras and all the funky things modern phones have they could easily take advantage of some very cool killer apps - N-gage hacks are just the start.
Its pretty sad that he has absolutely no idea about what hes talking about. Email isnt a thing that can be taxed, its just a standard way of doing something, its just another packet on the internet, so what are you going to do? say that i cant run a mail server on my computer unless it does things your way? Otherwise how can you possibly tax the current protocal of email? The only way to do it is to come up with an entirely new system, for example lets call it fmail. fmail would have some way of taxing its use maybe by passing every message through one big hackable Microsoft based server, so aslong as you got everyone using it instead of email it would be taxable. lets keep the internet free, and free from idiot politicians who dont understand it.
You wouldnt try and perform brain surgery if you had no idea about medicine so dont try and making legal decisions about the internet unless you know what your talking about.
All i know is i want one, the unmarked DVD aspect will surely make it a good buy because it wount adhere to any of the MPAAs bull shit - ie fast forwarding and region encoding which is something the general public can grasp, so hopefully these things will sell around the world and introduce a new format while not making people have to update their collections:P
UNIX calculates time in seconds since its birthday, GMT 00:00:00, Thursday, January 1, 1970 C.E. The industry-wide practice is to use a 32-bit variable for this number (32-bit signed time_t)
I'm probably missing something but why did they use a signed number? they could have got an extra 70 years out of it!
Can i take this moment to infer that the RIAA rapes 12 year-old japanese girls who download music from Kazaa aided by mini helicopters - we must think of the childeren!
Oohh its the year of the paid music download boom, but will it end up as a burst bubble like the dot coms? Me thinks almost as certainly as this post will get modded down.

If people submit quick and dirty hack solutions do they still get the money? isnt that one of the problems with commercial software?
