I started installing Linux when you were probably in grade school. I was merely poking fun at how far behind most other CURRENT distros Debian's installation procedure is;-)
*All* forms of government eventually lead to a dictatorship if they are not checked. The problem we have in the US now is all THREE branches are out of control, so there really are no checkxs and balances are our freedoms and the rights of the States slowly erode away over the decades.
I'd have to redo all of my keybinds for various first person shooters. It's the only thing I use that key for, but it MUST STAY! (points railgun at the submitter menacingly)
The point is that if you do your job as a parent you shouldn't HAVE to police them 24/7. Will they make mistakes? Sure, that's how they learn. Can they be brought up with a work ethic and a sense of personal responsibility (two things quite lacking in much of our youth)? You betcha.
Lazy parents. That's the problem, not violent content in games. If parents would actually PARENT their kids instead of being all self absorbed and/or just wanting to 'be their friend'. The vast majority of parents are lazy, do not want to take responsibility for their children's actions, and pay little if no attention to raising them properly. As a parent of a teenager I can say it makes my job all the harder too.
Instead of going after media (games, movies, whatever), why not focus on the ONLY place where social problems can be adequately addressed...the HOME.
It *is* possible that future advances in astrophysics and cosmology will nullify the dark matter argument. It's just as likely that there *is* some sort of mass carrying matter out that that we have yet to identify. Either way it just shows how much we have left to learn.
A small portion of it is rocks, dust, etc. Prevailing theories hold that much (most) of it is made up of non-baryonic matter which has yet to be observed.
How about waiting for the 21st and THEN posting a story. There is literally nothing of substance yet. Oh wait, this is Slashdot. We'll just have it posted again in two days, then on the 21st, then on the 25th, etc.
If this phone went mass market, 99% of the people wouldn't even know what flash means, let alone try to reflash it. How many Grandma's out there reformat their PC and reinstall their OS?
It's also easy to disavow support if the software is modified, as in 'sure you can modify and reprogram this phone. your warranty and support is then null and void.' In other words, 'do this at your own risk'.
There are other reasons it might not make it, but yours isn't one of them.
Oh please. This argument is getting very tired. Show me one case where someone has been persecuted for legitimately excercising their free speech rights. The NSA has been tapping phones for a LOT longer than the current administration has been around. This service has everything to do with being able to circumvent copyright laws and little to do with political freedom. They just dress it up in sexy anti-government language. Note their first goal; the reform of copyright law.
This reminds me of the people who cried out 'Freenet is about social and political freedom, not about downloading kiddie porn'.
I'm not saying that this might not be a useful service, but please, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then call it what it is; a duck.
PC's aren't going to scale down and take over the living room. DVR's are going to (and are) scale up in capabilities instead. My TiVo now lets me listen to Internet radio, check the weather, and lots of other things that used to be the venue of a PC. Oh it also lets me play my entire MP3 collection with my remote control, not to mention view every digital photo we've saved over the years.
The 'Media PC' was mostly hype, but the kinds of things touted for them are already creeping into living rooms all over.
Not at all. I have one friend who cannot find a job. He keeps having the most horrible luck. I never said EVERYONE could get a dream job. In his case he refuses to do anything he feels is 'beneath him'.
I also know people who are underemployed. In each case it's lack of motivation.
All the Doom and Gloom stuff about the economy and job market is FUD plain and simple. You can dress it up but it's still a pig.
Whatever though. You keep putting words into my mouth. Where did I say the job market was great? It's good, and better than anywhere else in the world, but not exactly great since wages are down slightly. All I did was react against the prevalent whining and doom and gloom babble about the economy being bad.
I was laid off twice in the last five years and got a job within a month or two each time. I know many others who did the same. The difference between us and the people I know who DIDNT find work right away when they lost a job is 90% motivation, 10% luck.
Sympathy wasn't what I was talking about. I was referring to people who ascribe nasty motives to corporations that do layoffs. Their motive is profit, as it should be if they are a publically traded company. If that means laying people off then that's just life. Do I feel for the individual circumstances of people? Sure. Do I feel sympathy for people who won't get another job? Nope, and yes I say 'won't'. There are always jobs out there. They might not be the kind of job one wants, but they sure do give you a paycheck while you look for something better.
I have been, twice in fact, yet I agree with the GP's sentiment. Layoffs are part of doing business in a capitalist economy. I didn't *like* it, but I understood it and even went back to work for one of the 'offending' companies by choice (I had another job when they called).
Not everyone is a 'poor me' whiner. Some of us understand that life can throw you curveballs. You adapt, improvise, and overcome. That's the only real choice.
No, because he didn't have the sense to file letters with the credit reporting agencies explaining the bankrupcy...trust me, dispute letters DO work.
The US has some of the lowest unemployment in the world. In fact, economists hate it when it gets much lower than it is now because labor costs start to rise exponentially. Don't give me the 'they are all minimum wage jobs' line either. They are not. I don't know about your area, but around here (Pittsburgh) even a fast food restaraunt has to pay quite a bit more than minimum wage or they won't get anyone to work.
You can tell if it's good by the scent, color, and feel. If it has color but is hard and odorless, it's no good. If it's soft and colorless but smells good, it's probably not too bad. If it smells good but is hard and colorless, it's not that great.
People are just too lazy to figure out how to pick fresh produce.
Granted my personal experience is anecdotal, but I do not know one single person who WANTS self checkout. Stores are moving to this model to save labor costs, not because of some public outcry demanind self checkout.
I won't use self checkout at all until stores start giving me a 2% kickback on my purchases. Why? I'm saving them money by doing the labor that normally would be done by a cashier. I don't work for free.
At least according to Senator Stevens it is.

...nor even handed. I am not sure there is a news outlet that IS even handed. Human biases always creep in.
They could probably just take the cooling fans from a high end NVIDIA card and use them to provide initial lift for the rocket.

Think about those little data cartidges that Spock used to stick into the computer on Star Trek.

You have no idea who I socialize with, and you thus made a very bad assumption. Better luck next time when you go fishing ;)
