It's boring yet half the people here say "you obviously didn't read the memo! Read the memo!" Like it was the best thing since the bible. It's boring and not very smart.
Of course, one can also write
"Conservative hypocrisy. Kaepernick -> well done/ Damore -> boo hoo hoo"... And please don't tell me that one group is more vocal/has better media than the other because I just don't think that's true. You will say NYT I will retort Fox News etc..
For the nuclear part, the problem for me is not that they are unable to finish EPR reactor (although I guess I would not want one to have a major accident...) it's that they pour billions after billions in nuclear technology, just "because" (France has has good thermonuclear weapons since a long time, and "research" reactors and enrichment facilities, nothing needed here)...."because" they can't be wrong I guess.
Meanwhile they don't invest in wind or solar in a meaningful way, and by the time they realize they're in a technological dead-end, all solar panels and wind turbines will be bought from the germans and chinese...if it's not already the case.
Interesting.
Your are right about the Germans, they usually are much smarter/meaner in the european joint ventures (alternative: the French are idiots who time after time get burnt)
The trains are fine, the don't sell very well is the problem. The conventional speed trains, underground cars...are on par with the competition I guess.
The high-speed trains were once the best in the world (with the Shinkansen) something to be proud of. Now the competition does the same, the trains never sold as cutting edge technology should have, they never studied the Pendolino, because not invented here...I see that Alstom (French) bought the Fiat subsidiary responsible for the Pendolino, but what have they done with it?
The problem with the trains, since they don't sell, is that Alstom has chronic cash shortages, will merge with german Siemens, and as usual the Germans being much smarter for this type of deal, will get all work and meaningful industrial production in 10/15 years time. Against a company that made, not so long ago, the best trains in the world.
Being french I feel entitled to whine as much as I please;)
French do some things right, but what irks me are the self-inflicted wounds from our CEOs and the like, who make mistake from mistake but never suffer from it since it's such a tight cozy club...
Thinking that reusable rockets cannot work, that a private company cannot compete with them, is just one of the latest mistakes, from the upper management of Arianespace. Since they all come from the same school(s) nobody thinks out of the box, nobody challenges the "accepted wisdom", nobody imagines that others could be right and them wrong.
I don't mean to say that Peugeot does everything bad, far from it. Still I believe if it were not for a lot of poor decisions, they would be in a much better shape...
My parents had a 307, nice car, they now have a 308, I preferred the 307 (had an automatic gearbox from Porsche I think).
In France I sometimes see Renault "Zoe" electric cars, never seen a Peugeot or Citroen one. 15 years ago there already were some electric cars, prototypes...Putting them in the street in numbers is where it's at, now.
Yes Peugeot was/is good with diesel, one can think it is a dead-end (literally, since the premature deaths from diesel apparently number in the thousands)...To be fair this is not only Peugeot's doing but also the French government pushing Diesel until very recently (reminds me of the asbestos scandal...)
Well, France is a complete disaster industry-wise, whereas in Europe Germany fro instance is doing just fine...
By the way I haven't talked about Airbus, increasingly looking as such: French pride, US research, German production and jobs...The French still have their pride so everything seems OK for them...It's like the joke, the symbol of France is a rooster because it's the only animal capable of singing while standing on a pile of shit...
As for Peugeot, they're in better shape than they were a few years ago (and admittedly a lot of auto companies suffered and cut lost of jobs, not only french) but they're still job-wise, a shadow of their former self, quality-wise it's not fabulous, they're half owned by a chinese company, and don't have any interesting innovation to show us (hello electric cars? autopilot? New materials? Modularity?)...Not so rosy in my book.
Meanwhile the french people of Arianespace, from their tower of smugness, must finally start to sweat a little, and maybe, maybe....begin to consider their superiority complex.
Problem is, in France, they all come from the same school ("Ecole polytechniquqe, sometimes "centrale"), and are so sure of their genius, that they repeatedly run into the ground all the french industries: automotive (Peugeot), nuclear (Areva), petroleum services (Technip), electric appliances (Schneider) , banking, entertainment, electricity (EDF), trains and power generation (Alstom)..I must forget some....and now space! Yay:(
Yes it seems that they are fighting economics 101 where the price of their product or their margin is rapidly decreasing because it is no more unique and there are competitors. Maybe they will not be able to fight simple economics for too long, and they will not have the time to create a regulatory and legislative environment that entrenches their monopoly too much.
They are trying to create new barriers to entry with massive datacenters, and "AI" (pattern recognition) but frankly it seems to be a case of diminishing returns. And if their margin decrease they will not have as much "cash power" as now.
So, good things! Every company should be paid to the value that they give to society, and not more because of monopolies.
It's terrible what happened to the banana republic of north america today. I guess the answer, courtesy of the NRA, and helped by all brain-deprived muricans, will be moar guuuns! As the ahole in chief would say, sad.
Well then you're unlucky because I've been using Linux for years without any problem as serious as the one you're describing. Never used OSX but I agree that windows is terrible.
I see your point, however, one can make the opposite argument: why should some narrow-minded parents restrict what is taught to my child, in school? And force a backwards world view?
And just as the people "defending" the StormFront (daily Storm? whatever the "nazi website") used to argue here, I could use the following argument: First you censor transgender child stories, then it's same-sex marriage, then it's mixed race couples, then...
You seem to place the threshold at 300m, I would rather say: 0 to 1km: walk (at most, 30 mins of walking which is good for you), 1km to 4km: bike, further than 4km: car. This changes the density necessary for the system to be useful and efficient.
BTW thanks for no using yards or miles:)
Yes. And using a Mac to do a presentation on Linux in servers or cars would be OK. But saying this is "the year of desktop Linux" with a Mac is stupid. Either it IS "the year", hence use a Linux system, or it isn't. It seems that the guy was reciting words without understanding their meaning, or really not bothering.

Both lost their jobs and can express their views or whine (depending on your own view) as much as they please.
funnyman

All the nifty animation should'nt impede the "onclick" ("ontouch"?) events. I would put the blame here, pure and simple.

I think I agree with you. Thank god I'm not the one programming these cars and misplacing periods... Thanks for the laugh :)
Couldn't a good decision be 95% reliability for "general driving" and 9.9999% reliability for stopping when an obstacle is in front of the car?
Perfectly explained.

To them the cost seems (at first) zero, since they expect you to do the reporting on unpaid overtime.

Of course the "Mein Kampf" factoid was coming, but insinuating LGBT equivalency with old Adolf, and progressives with (neo)nazis, GG!

Fallacies.
